We have a good friend who has a 4 year old girl who may not have much time left. She has t-cell CNS lymphoma and is in a really bad state. We are currently looking anywhere to find the name of ANY pediatric oncologist with any experience combining alternative treatmetns with traditional chemo treatments. We would like to consult by phone as this is urgent. Please read, share and help. Thank you.

Dear 40-12, Tcell CNS lymphoma is a serious business, but you and your oncologist should know that there have been clinical studies showing some combinations of chemo and delayed radiation, or in some cases bone marrow/stem cell transplant, that have been effective in getting remission, 2nd remission, and even cure after relapse for these kids. However, it sadly doesn't work for every patient... if your friend wants to combine alternative treatments, and aren't gettting support from their oncologist, how far afield are you willing to go? Where are you physically, in the UK? You might find a dr in Europe or the US who would phone-consult, but they are more likely to want to consult with the dr first to get the specifics of your friend's daughters condition, which is critical.

Good luck to you and your friend, they are lucky to have your support.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. She went through a sucessful bone marrow transplant a few years ago and now has had a sudden and drastic relapse. We are all grasping at straws to help her and the family. I am just trying to find a doctor in Europe or USA or otherwise who would be willing to phone-consult with her doctor. If I can find someone like this, we can setup the consult. The doctors are supportive of anything at this point... but we need to find something concrete or someone else to consult with. Do you have any names or contact info for doctors with knowledge in this area?

Ah... that's rough sad In some cases, a second BMT is possible, but not always, and it is very hard on the patient. I'm sure her docs have considered that if it was any option at all. In a public forum, of course, one can't give names or contact info. However, here is a link http://www.aphon.org/files/public/complimentary_and_alt_med.pdf

to a recent publicly available article from a reputable journal, that reviews the uses of complementary/alternative med in pediatric oncology. This should give you some wider understanding and, via the references, some contacts. Please do be aware that CAM in such cases is generally given to reduce side effects or symptoms, and is not considered to be curative. Best wishes to you all.
