7months post op - bursitis? trapped nerve?

Hi all - a bit of history first - couple of months ago had a physio assessment for back and knee, may be coincidental but next day had clicking hip and it felt loose. It didn't seem to improve over the next few days so booked hosp appointment - this was going to take a month - anyway over time it did get a lot better so I cancelled - I didn't want to take up the precious time of specialists unless I was really bad.

Since then I continued with my general activities - I'm retired - A walk of about 3 miiles every 2 weeks, and some gardening  a few days each week which does involve quite a bit of bending.

I have never since my op been able to sleep on the operated side it has always been too sore and still feels a bit numb on the side of the leg below the scar. The soreness however got really bad and my leg was hurting all the way down to my knee and then I was getting tingling pain in my shins. Went to my GP and he said I should go back and he would write also - so booked appointment. Because of the pain I stopped doing lots of things and have generally just been sitting around, a bit of housework and shopping. The pain has got a lot better - no pain in shins and above knee but I still have soreness in the trocanter region and can't sleep on that side.

Anyone had any similar problems after such a long time? On the one hand I think have I been doing too much and so maybe shouldn't bother the consultant. However  I don't think I've done anything over the top. I'm thinking I should still go to the appointment as you really should be able to lie on your side after all this time and I'm assuming if I start doing stuff again it will get worse.

I think you would be wise to see the consultant

I'm almost 7 months post op and I can't sleep on the operated side either, that side of my leg still hurts feels like it's bruised, and is hard, I still rub the side of my hip all the time, it hurts more when I am walking with shoes on, I don't have much pain when I have slippers on or am barefoot. I'm thinking I may go see my surgeon too, I know it takes time to heal, but I am uncomfortable quite a bit, and I don't think I've over done anything. I had anterior approach.

Mixed feelings reading your reply. It's comforting knowing someone else has a similar problem but I also wish you didn't have it! It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I have shoes or slippers but I do think bending affects it - and that's not going past the 90. It could be the muscles irritating the bursa but that doesn't account for the numbness. When I had my other hip done many years ago it felt like normal very quickly and I was back working and doing all sorts within 12 weeks.

This is my first hip replacement, and yes I'm concerned to, I have a hard time kneeling to the floor and always hold on to something when I do kneel. Maybe we are not exercising enough and we are stiff...Don't know?

I am going to go - it's next week  and will let you know how I get on. I don't think mine is lack of general exercise - I'm not stiff. Maybe certain muscles could be improved though.

    Hi Annedi,

I am so sorry to hear of your continued problems after your hip surgery ...

definitely go to the appointment and have it checked -

take someone with you, okay ?  I know what you mean by not wanting to bother consultant, as I am the same way - or I minimize my complaints - I take my girlfriend with me and get answers ....

It is time to take care of annedi !!!!!

    big warm hug

That is such a good idea, taking someone else along.  I insist on having my wife there with me, she sees it from a slightly different perspective, and asks questions that I then think 'why didnt i think of asking that'.

She also listens better than me despite her hearing loss.

      Best Wishes

Thanks renee. It's difficult because I can do more than before the op even with the trocanter pain as the deep internal pain has gone. Before I couldn't get down the street without pain so you tend to feel you are being picky and should be thankful!

It's a good idea to take someone with me.

sweet annedi ....NOOOOO  frown.... do not settle for less -

of course you are thankful ... no question about that - it is great that the deep internal pain is gone ...

however, you are worried and concerned about the other pains and discomfort - Probably all part of the healing process, but still, go and ask - and please please please, take someone with you -

sending you love and angel blessing

Consultant visit over. no xray but a gentle moving of the leg. Consultant appeared confident that the problem was with scar tissue not yet healed and the numbness down to the nerves the area of which would also diminish over time. He reckoned that the hip was ok and only more time needed. The clicking he was sure was a tendon and he wasn't bothered about that either. Didn't want to do anything to the hip. As for activity said do what I need to do. Must not compare with previous hip op as each one was different. Relieved.

      Hello Annedi,

I too had the same thing. Scar tissue that had not healed and nerves that had not quite recovered. I couldn't lie on my operated side until almost 8 months post, numbness. Eventually the scar tissue does die down, the nerves regain their function and things feel more normal!

Pleased to hear it! Did yours get worse when you did a lot? Mine certainly gets worse when I bend more and I can feel it when climbing stairs and after a long walk.

Good for you, take it easy and don't over do it...

Certainly will - at least the weather now means I'll be out of the garden! Hope you get your problem sorted.
