Achalasia and work

Posted , 4 users are following.

I've been struggling with esophageal achalasia for 6 years already. I judt finished college and I feel like my condition isn't really well enough to work a full time. Im always tired, i spend most of my time trying to eat and if I dont eat or if I skip meals i tend to lose weight fast. Anyone have advice? I need to work and be an adult but I feel kind of down about this situation.

First of all get your mineral / vitamin levels checked, and think about liquid nutritional supplements if required.   Try and take in nutritious foods in form of soups etc or other things that you find all right to swallow.   Try and relax around food, and give your system plenty of time to let the food go down with gravity.

There are some hints on the website of the oesophageal patients association under The oesophagus, and Achalasia.

Try and get referred to a specialist at one of the main Upper GI surgery centres for a doctor to have a look at you to see whether some kind of treatment would be helpful.

It is natural to feel depressed by this, but you also need to know that you are doing what you can to alleviate the symptoms as best you can.

I have had Achalasia for 25+ years starting in my mid twenties.  Before I had my procedure done I was struggling as you are.  But since I had my procedure done life is much easier to manage.  I still have bad phases where I aspirate at night, or struggle to eat.  But overall I have managed to raise 3 kids to adulthood as a single mom, while working full time.  I think getting proper treatment would be your best bet before you try to decide what your future limitations may or may not be
