Achilles Pain

Posted , 9 users are following.

I have been experiencing a lot of pain in my left achilles for a few months. Been to a physio and he diagnosed it as Achilles Tendonitis but after a number of treatments nothing has really changed.

If I wear heels or keep my toe ponted the pain reduces but it is then much worse when I walk again. Sometimes it is like a burning sensation as it stretches.

I am so sick of limping everywhere but I don;t know what else to do.

    Hi hun

Have you tried reducing the size of your heals and getting yourself some gel heel inserts.....I'm recovering from 1 rupture and 1 torn achillies, was in pot with both legs for 3 months......I'm 1 week into walking I've gone from a zimmer frame to crutch in just one week and am wearing about an inch heel as can't walk in flats with the gel insert and it defo works even though at moment walking like a pregnant penguin......also try ice packs and hot compresses.....

Had similar issue for 3 months; I got excellent physio via my gym, but it depends on the skill of the therapist I think, bit random. Was on antiinflamatories, gell heel lifts, nitro patches to increase blood flow and slow progress. Ice packs most evenings.  Walking ok but with a bit of a limp, then stumpled and ruptured it. That cured the pain, but a slow recovery in progress.

I am using ice packs most nights. Me heels are only about 1.5" and do give some pain relief. I have gel instep supports and tried heel supports but they did nothing for my heel but did give me back spasms as it put my hips at an odd angle.

Think i will go and see the doc when I get back from holiday. In the meantme I will keep doing the exercises.

ASK YOUR G.P FOR A REFERAL TO SEE A SPECIALIST.

SURGERY DID NOT WORK FOR ME BUT I KNOW THOSE THAT IT HAS HELPED,

IN THE MEAN TIME ASK FOR PAIN KILLERS AND LET YOUR G.P THAT PHYSIO IS NOT HELPING.

I KNOW THAT FOR ME PHYSIO NEARLY MADE THINGS MUCH WORSE FOR ME AND I NO LONGER TRUST PHYSIOS.

I HAVE BEEN LIMPING EVERYWHERE FOR 3 YEARS NOW SO I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN IT CAN BE AWFUL.

I NOW HAVE CHRONIC NERVE PAIN AND WILL NEVER BE BETTER AND WILL BE ON PAIN KILLERS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

THIS CAN BE DISHEARTNING JUST TAKE THINGS ONE DAY AT A TIME.

Well, after the last week I am now raring to see a doctor. We were walking for 10 - 15km a day. At the start of the week I struggled to get out of bed so, summoning up my very best Italian, I found a pharmacy and bought an ice pack. So when i work up I would strap ice to my foot and take co codamol or tramadol (left from a previous joint injury). But it was so bad I will be making a doctors appointment very shortly.

In the meantime it will be ice and drugs.

Well my rehab has been 4 weeks now after being in cast for 3 months....having ruptured both my archillies. Started physio who isaid now giving me 6 sessions of hydro therapy...  walking much better and only use my crutches when out the house.    I drove for 1/2 hour for the 1st time at weekend.....I find the more I do the easier it is ..As once sitting down gets the aches and spasms....but so far am happy with the physio who says we are following a 22 week plan.... have to do step ups forwards and backwards..lots of walking.....lunges against a chair and rotating my feet in circles and forward and backwards...The stiffness is easing but was told afer resting or sleeping will be still due to the cologne needing to be worked... I don't take pain killers as want to feel wot my legs are doing...still get heel pain but was told I will due to time in cast.....so far I'm happy with my progress and can now get up and down the stairs with help of the banister.

    Hi

You dont say what happened or what brought it on. I have had 2 to 3 episodes in last 10 yrs first two were quite random and took full yr to recover. I had massage around the back if the heel not directly on the lump that formed. I used alternating heat and ice packs and diclofenac gel when it was severe. There are exercises you can do to improve strength once the acute phase is over. My third episode followed reduced mobility after knee surgery. I used the same treatments an currently am pain free. I have been lucky to have contact with excellent physios. You could try a sports physio or see someone who specializes in orthotics (inserts for yr shoes) as yr walking gait may be contributing to the condition.

The physio I saw said it was probably due to my gait (I tended to turn my left foot out apparently!) and also I had some ill fitting safety shoes that caused bad blisters so i spent 3 or 4 days walking oddly. The heel that is bad was the one with the biggest blister.

I have orthotics in my shoes to raise my arches and I now make a conscious effort not to turn my foot out. The exercises (usual stuff, lunges, stretches and trying to lift my whole body weight using just the one foot) have not done anything apart from hurt!

I have the appt with my GP so I am hoping we get something sorted.

Hi sounds like u doing all the right things. Yr GP may be able to prescribe anti inflammatories . Personally I like naproxen, diclofenac plays havoc with my stomach. See what yr gp says as not everyone can take them and they dont always help Achilles tendonitis .

Keep on with the exercises I know they hurt but just work up to the pain not through it or beyond it or you will feel worse.

The good thing is the pain often goes as suddenly as it appears. Is very depressing though so make time for pampering and relaxation.

      Good luck

      Hi Sheila,

thanks for the reply. I am keeping up with the exercises. I really hope that one day I just wake up and it doesn't hurt! It happened with my plantar fasciitis! As far as anti inflams go, I am the opposite to you. Diclofenac are fine but naproxen gave me stomach cramps. A bit wary of takign too many pain killer. The last ones the doc gave me for a torn rotator cuff were Tramadol and I was scared of getting addicted!

      Keep hobbling on!

There is a jelly type pad you can buy that fits in the heel of your shoes ,it

takes the pressure off your tendon and helps take the pain away

Thanks jacqueline, sure did need the positive words atm.  I suffered a torn left calf about a year ago, did all the right, frustrating, things and it was healed in time for me to run a 6 hour ultra, and have been training really well for the next ultra, but suddenly for no apparent reason the lft achilles decided to 'spring a leak' - been about two months now, walking without any 'spring' in the step one day, no pain, then can't walk 50 mtrs the next day.  So frustrating. but thank you for the encouragement.  It did lift my spirits.
