Acid reflux unresolved

Posted , 12 users are following.

I have been treated with different PPIs for the last 12-18 months on/off. Had varying symptoms like stomach, chest pain, wheezing. Dry tickle. However I have been getting quite often a sore throat, bit of a dry irritated cough very occasional and that horrible feeling as though my throat feels locked 🤔 It comes on all of a sudden. I can just b sitting down and my throat goes really dry and feel as tho throat restricted. Doc gave me lanzapromole and have only been taking a week. No improvement as such yet. I haven't had any tests to see whether it is reflux. That's why I've been apprehensive in taking the PPIs. I am just so scared that if it is that there maybe damage? How long does it take for these PPIs to actually work and if any damage will they help heal it?

I don't know why but it's not even food related most times. I can go most the day without having anything but a piece of toast and still get the symptoms. I also burp more so. But the sore throat really bothers me and the throat restriction sad had a peak tube to test asthma and that was ok. Can anyone help with advise please 🙀

It usually takes a few days and upto a fortnight before you can notice whether PPIs are working or not.

However, their principal role is in reducing acid and reflux may still persist.

Reflux may continue full column and braech the upper sphincter as extra-oesophageal reflux which is frequently known as LPR.

This can cause the symptoms you describe.

Medication may not be effective in reducing these symptoms which are best treated by lifestyle changes: lose weight if necessary, do not overfill your stomach - eat little and often, leave at least 3 hours between last meal and bed, raise the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches on blocks.

    Hi Lisa.

You have my sympathy, I have had exactly the same symptoms as you for about 6months now.

I was put on omeprazole (another type of ppi) and after about 4 weeks on 40mg a day things started getting so much better (I also adopted all the other life style changes that barrets mentioned, apart from loosing weight as I'm already just below my recommended bmi)

Things were so much better for me for a couple of months I really thought id seen the last of this horrible disease, but unfortunately in the last couple of weeks ot seems omeprazole is not being effective for me anymore and my symptoms are slowly but surely returning 😞

I am seeing a gastrointestinal specialist next month (yes it has taken this long of persistently bugging my GP to refer me, as she is not taking my lpr seriously at all) bit I'm not sure if its ent or gastro I need?

All I do know is something has to be done, I am fed up with the whole thing, I look back to a year ago and I'm a totally different person, enjoying life, food, my kids and a social life, gerds/lpr has completely ruined all of that for me.

I have been looking into this alot. A few experts recommend trying pro kinetic drugs (google it) although they can have some undesirable side effects, I'm at the point I will try anything, they are supposed to strengthen your les (lower oesophageal sphincter) which os what weakens to cause our symptoms.

I'm afraid I don't have any advice for you as everything I have had has failed (I did find drinking hunegar helped for a while, bit like everything else became non effective after a while)

All I can say is your not alone, please don't suffer, keep on at your docs, get refered to anyone you can and keep trying to find a resolution (I have a feeling mine is goin to end with surgery) I'm a young busy working mum, who cannot live the rest of my life feeling like this.

The breathlessnes is so terrifying I have to force myself to eat, as soon as I eat it feels like a vice is being tightened around my lungs, the cough is unproductive and constant, and the burning in the back of my throat is so bad, even drinking water is problematic.

I do hope you find your resolution, sorry my post is not more helpful to you, but please know you are not alone with this, I know how horrible it is for you xx

Hi I am new on this thread but not new to gastritis.  I had it five years ago and managed to get rid of it.  It has come back but along with the pain in the left side its presenting with new symptoms which are awful.  It burns and pains like hell right up the tube and into my throat.  Pain in the back also.  Eating is scary now and like you say even drinking water.  Sometimes it is ok, then bam other times the burning and pain starts.  My throat feel raw with it.  It has changed my life also.  Socially what is the point in going out with friends when I cant join them eating or drinking.

I am booked in at gp next week and will no doubt be sent for endoscopy like I had five years ago.

Feeling this for you.  It stinks.

Hi been I have started taking mastik gum as read in this forum. I have read good reviews. I thought I'd give it a try as doc said looks like I will b on PPIs long term and I don't want that!

I can't tell u if the gum will make a difference but worth a go. Only started Monday so hopefully in a cpl of weeks should notice a difference if any smile I didn't realise how miserable reflux can make u sad see what the endoscopy confirms and let me know. Good luck x

Laura I am 8 weeks post op for Nissen Fundoplication and Hiatal Hernia repair   I lived with this nightmare for over 30 years as attacks were infrequent then and frankly docs just prescribed ppi's i have had them all to date.  It got so bad this past yr that i cant even take over the counter meds ie robitussin if i had a cold it would trigger chest pains awful.  Long story short finally found a good doctor who had me go for PH PROBE, and MOTILITY study.....trust me that was a god send.  Those tests will define everything....my sphicter was weak, I had 60% acid in my stomach going into the hernia.  Therefore had the terrible pains which mimc a heart attack...I sympathize with u having gone through this hell for sooo long.  Now I am recovering, and dr. said I will never have to take PPIs again.  He does not feel anyone should be on them for a long time.  From what I read now look what studies have said about it now....alzheimers, bone weakening, its scary what they can do long term.  My suggestion search out a good gasto dr., even if it means two opinions but there is no need to suffer with this gerd....Good Luck to you....and if you look up Nissen Fundoplication on Mayo Clinic site its exactlyu what I had to have done.  Not all of us have the same problem, but if u do the tests Ph probe and motility study u will definitely know what is wrong without all the guessing that doctors do.....take care and GOd Bless

Lisa I know exactly what your going through. I get really bad shortness of breath from my reflux . You need to look up L P R  it is a different kind of reflux . I stopped all ppi's I was on them for many years .  Lpr is a silent reflux that gives you really horrible symptoms. . Diet is the main cure here.  After you do some research on lpr. It will tell you that certain home remedys help. I drink alkaline water , I take manuka honey , I use slippery elm lozengers and I drink pure aloe Vera juice a few times a day. You first need to research lpr or go to a really good ENT Dr. Who specializes in lpr . Believe me you will get better .  Get back to me and let me know

LPR can be viewed as an extension of GORD. Refluxate (which doesn't need to be acidic) can travel full column and breach the upper sphincter as extra-oesophageal reflux commonly known as LPR.

Go to the DownWithAcid org uk website and click the link to Extra-oesophageal reflux on the contents (home) page to get a full description and the possible symptoms etc.

Many supplementary therapies like manuka honey and aloe vera work as a demulcent that soothes inflammation of oesophagitis and can produce extra mucous to help protect against the acid.

But beware alkaline water. Its only effect is as a placebo, its main beneficiaries are the companies that produce it and it can be dangerous.

PM me if you want further information and a link to the article "Alkaline Water Hoax - It is Simple Science".

Thankyou for your advice. I've heard about aloe Vera juice but I can't seem to get it. Do u know where i can buy it from?

Thankyou the advice I've been given has been great already! Having Non ulcer dyspepsia, never realised that LPR was different to GERD. I just assumed it all referred to the same thing 🤔 Just shows what help the doctors have been. The breathing is horrible, well it's not like I can't breathe as such just seems slightly restricted and as if something is just sitting there. The sore throat has just made it worse so I'm seriously going to look into my diet and find something simple I can stick to. I am determined to try and self help as I really do not want to take PPIs.

    • Posted

Yes I'm just in Birmingham smile somebody just told me to try Holland and barratts? 🤔
    • Posted

Yes I think they sell it, if you struggle let me know and ill put you in touch.

....going back to your last message, I smiled when you said your gp diagnosed anxiety due to all your symptoms... I had exactly the same, she even tried to get me taking diazepam and Prozac! I cant believe how little is known about all this in the medical world x

Oh and she also told me I had an eating disorder because I was struggling so much to eat... The fact is I'm desperate to eat I just hate the side effects I get from food and drink 😒

      Ok thanks Laura smile

Really!! Same here. One doc gave me some antidepressant tablet. I didn't take them. I was like I'm only anxious because I feel awful and no one seems to b able to help 🙀

So good to have these forums and talk with people with real experience x

Unbelievable really. Just shows how little some doctors know! I really hope that they get to the bottom of things for you. Let me know smile

I will do. I hope the same for you too, keep me posted and let us know how the aloe Vera goes. Good luck and like you say, no one can possibly understand how horrible reflux makes you feel, unless you suffer yourself. So I too take alot of comfort from this forum as everyone understands x

Thanks Laura will do. I shall get some tomorrow. Will try whatever I can. I think cutting down on sugar and sweet stuff will give me an incentive to get a bit fitter too wink x

Angelshelp what a great positive post.  Gives us all hope.

I drink aloe vera juice and have a high factor Manuka honey.  I also take Tumeric caps for inflammation.  I will definitely try slippery elm lozenger,  Never tried that.  My Gastritis feel different this time with the pain up the chest into back and throat that Laura describes.

Losing weight too.  Get scared to eat and then feel sick due to anxiety of it all.

Keep posting as you have - most encouraging - thanks  x

Ahh now you have got me.  I don't know but I want to know - also mastik

gum - but I have seen on here the gum can be bought at Amazon so I would think so can the DGL liquorice.

Can anyone out there confirm this.

      Thanks guys x

lisa H & B also sell Mastic Gum and DGL I have just checked.

Thanks gwen. Just hope it's not as expensive as the mastic 😳

I've sent you the links regarding the alkaline water hoax.

At best, any benefit from alkaline water for a ptient would be purely placebo. The main benfactors are those who sell it.

Oh this is so true laura, I have HH and reflux esoph diagnosed thru camera a few weeks ago - PPI given but dont want to go that route - taking Zantac am and pm and Gavi if bad.  I am nervous of eating.  Avoid spicy, fruit juice, chock, caffeine ec - but I can eat something that has been fine and then it decides it does not want it and hurts.  It gets my throat - burns and hurts for ages. Bedtime is my best time, no pain, I have lifted my mattress tho which will help.

It is so life changing - no eating out anymore, no getting friends round for a meal.

Still cooking for hubs his fave meals which I cant now join in and have.

What a mess.  Have bought Mastic Gum - not had it yet - I had Aloe Vera Juice from H & B ahd it seems to make me worse - looked at label and it has ascorbic acid in it - and from what I am reading it should not have - it should be pure - I don't know if H & B have it pure!!

I am reading on another reliable forum about zinc carnosine and am looking into this.

I wonder if anyone on here has tried it.

I also have read on the other forum about Alkaline water and that it can make things worse as Barretts says.

      Any thoughts guys.

Hi angel. I am so sorry but for some reason I have only had this come up in my mailbox 🤔 I am so relieved to read your response and kind of uncanny as just lately I've had further symptoms of what u r saying. I too think it's more LPR now as I'm getting sore throats still and even ear pain. I am waiting for gastro for endoscopy, not being a wimp or anything but I really don't just don't think it's necessary. I too feel I should see an ENT doctor so I'm going to try get an appointment nxt week. I just hope they will refer me. I also Wheeze at times too. Thanku for telling me what u take. Do u have any advice on diet? xx

Hi Laura, I bought Aloe from H & B ages ago before all this reflux started and it was fine.  But now I hav reflux it hurts me.  On checking it has ascorbic acid in it and citric acid.  I note from people on here that it has to be pure Aloe.  I am in Manchester UK - where is your friend based?

      Any help is really appreciated.

      G.
