Acid reflux unresolved
Posted , 12 users are following.
I have been treated with different PPIs for the last 12-18 months on/off. Had varying symptoms like stomach, chest pain, wheezing. Dry tickle. However I have been getting quite often a sore throat, bit of a dry irritated cough very occasional and that horrible feeling as though my throat feels locked 🤔 It comes on all of a sudden. I can just b sitting down and my throat goes really dry and feel as tho throat restricted. Doc gave me lanzapromole and have only been taking a week. No improvement as such yet. I haven't had any tests to see whether it is reflux. That's why I've been apprehensive in taking the PPIs. I am just so scared that if it is that there maybe damage? How long does it take for these PPIs to actually work and if any damage will they help heal it?
I don't know why but it's not even food related most times. I can go most the day without having anything but a piece of toast and still get the symptoms. I also burp more so. But the sore throat really bothers me and the throat restriction had a peak tube to test asthma and that was ok. Can anyone help with advise please 🙀

However, their principal role is in reducing acid and reflux may still persist.
Reflux may continue full column and braech the upper sphincter as extra-oesophageal reflux which is frequently known as LPR.
This can cause the symptoms you describe.
Medication may not be effective in reducing these symptoms which are best treated by lifestyle changes: lose weight if necessary, do not overfill your stomach - eat little and often, leave at least 3 hours between last meal and bed, raise the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches on blocks.

You have my sympathy, I have had exactly the same symptoms as you for about 6months now.
I was put on omeprazole (another type of ppi) and after about 4 weeks on 40mg a day things started getting so much better (I also adopted all the other life style changes that barrets mentioned, apart from loosing weight as I'm already just below my recommended bmi)
Things were so much better for me for a couple of months I really thought id seen the last of this horrible disease, but unfortunately in the last couple of weeks ot seems omeprazole is not being effective for me anymore and my symptoms are slowly but surely returning 😞
I am seeing a gastrointestinal specialist next month (yes it has taken this long of persistently bugging my GP to refer me, as she is not taking my lpr seriously at all) bit I'm not sure if its ent or gastro I need?
All I do know is something has to be done, I am fed up with the whole thing, I look back to a year ago and I'm a totally different person, enjoying life, food, my kids and a social life, gerds/lpr has completely ruined all of that for me.
I have been looking into this alot. A few experts recommend trying pro kinetic drugs (google it) although they can have some undesirable side effects, I'm at the point I will try anything, they are supposed to strengthen your les (lower oesophageal sphincter) which os what weakens to cause our symptoms.
I'm afraid I don't have any advice for you as everything I have had has failed (I did find drinking hunegar helped for a while, bit like everything else became non effective after a while)
All I can say is your not alone, please don't suffer, keep on at your docs, get refered to anyone you can and keep trying to find a resolution (I have a feeling mine is goin to end with surgery) I'm a young busy working mum, who cannot live the rest of my life feeling like this.
The breathlessnes is so terrifying I have to force myself to eat, as soon as I eat it feels like a vice is being tightened around my lungs, the cough is unproductive and constant, and the burning in the back of my throat is so bad, even drinking water is problematic.
I do hope you find your resolution, sorry my post is not more helpful to you, but please know you are not alone with this, I know how horrible it is for you xx

I am booked in at gp next week and will no doubt be sent for endoscopy like I had five years ago.
Feeling this for you. It stinks.

I can't tell u if the gum will make a difference but worth a go. Only started Monday so hopefully in a cpl of weeks should notice a difference if any I didn't realise how miserable reflux can make u see what the endoscopy confirms and let me know. Good luck x

But beware alkaline water. Its only effect is as a placebo, its main beneficiaries are the companies that produce it and it can be dangerous.
PM me if you want further information and a link to the article "Alkaline Water Hoax - It is Simple Science".

....going back to your last message, I smiled when you said your gp diagnosed anxiety due to all your symptoms... I had exactly the same, she even tried to get me taking diazepam and Prozac! I cant believe how little is known about all this in the medical world x

I drink aloe vera juice and have a high factor Manuka honey. I also take Tumeric caps for inflammation. I will definitely try slippery elm lozenger, Never tried that. My Gastritis feel different this time with the pain up the chest into back and throat that Laura describes.
Losing weight too. Get scared to eat and then feel sick due to anxiety of it all.Â
Keep posting as you have - most encouraging - thanks x

At best, any benefit from alkaline water for a ptient would be purely placebo. The main benfactors are those who sell it.

It is so life changing - no eating out anymore, no getting friends round for a meal.Â
Still cooking for hubs his fave meals which I cant now join in and have.
What a mess. Have bought Mastic Gum - not had it yet - I had Aloe Vera Juice from H & B ahd it seems to make me worse - looked at label and it has ascorbic acid in it - and from what I am reading it should not have - it should be pure - I don't know if H & B have it pure!!
I am reading on another reliable forum about zinc carnosine and am looking into this.Â
I wonder if anyone on here has tried it.
I also have read on the other forum about Alkaline water and that it can make things worse as Barretts says.
Any thoughts guys.
