Appointment with Rheumatologist

Posted , 3 users are following.

PMR/GCA  since February 2014. Currently on 8.5 prednisolone.

He seemed to spend a long time telling me I'm on a substantial dose and which parts of my body are likely to be damaged by it! Well, thanks, I already know that! Grrr.

He tried to refer me on the two week rule to ENT as have polyp on voice box but I am between two NHS Trusts and my original ENT specialist is in the other one due to last years ambulance trip! Refer to GP.

On next appointment with rheumatology he wants to put me on Leflunamide and said to stay on 8.5mg pred. All too much really.

My husband has just been diagonosed with this, he's just 50, joints in ankles have swollen massively and he has trouble walking, just gone onto 3 tablets at day.  We're a bit worried what it all means, how long have you had this, and we're worried at damage from tablets too, as you say.

Sorry to hear about your husband. Was he diagnosed by GP? Does he have pain elsewhere apart from his ankles?

I've been on them nearly 2 years.

Hi thank you for replying!  His ankles are huge, a bit in his knees too, that's it for now, scary!

Well funny you should say that but my husband is convinced too that it is the wrong prognosis.  He's booking another appointment with his Dr.

Yes it's just his ankles, not his shoulders or hips.  My neighbour has it too and her symptons are spot on.

If you are in a large or medium sized  practice, it might be worth making an appointment with another doctor?    My regular doctor misdiagnosed PMR and I suffered for a couple of weeks and went back and saw another doctor who spotted it straight away.  I know it's the other way around with you - but a second opinion is always a good thing.

You don't have to say you don't want your regular doctor but any doctor that's available that day.  Best of Luck, John

I totally agree, my husband is too kind and wants to give the junior Dr a chance to get it right!  Ridiculous he's been in agony for a couple of weeks! I'll have a firm word with him when he is home!
