Back and butt pain

Hello, I need some help. I've been suffering from mild to severe lower back pain for years now when I walk. I have to sit down to alleviate the pain before continuing. Recently though, the pain has moved to my right.. buttock. It's so bad when I sleep that I wake up crying from the pain. I also noticed my lower back is hurting constantly, though not as bad as my hip/buttock. The pain occasionally goes to my leg as well. I would like to know what you think. I've got an appointment Tuesday, but the pain is horrible and I don't know how I'm going to wait that long. Thanks so much for your time.

Youir pain and experience is similar to mine...My sympyoms tend to indicate Spinal Stenosis. ...The only long term cure is a back spine operation that may help Less than 60% of the time..I've had several friends and family memberrs that have had back operations and 50% were helped and 50% ended up being worse....I'm 72 years old, have had a lot of operations during the last 5 years, and don't won't anymore unless absolutely necessary...For the meantime, I'm trying to reduce the things, ie. standing and walking, that cause my back pain and taking Aleve to releave pain.....I had been under constant pain until I changed my habits....There's many things that could be causing your back pain...I suggest that you see a spine neurologist...They should be able to determine the source of your pain and the treatments that might benefit.....Your GP might write a prescription for oxycodeine a pain killer that has helped me with severe pain...But, it's a opiate so don't take it long....Short & Temporary Term Treatments may include putting Heat on the area that has the pain, taking Aleve, wearing a back brace ( I do sometimes)....GOOD LUCK!......

Hi sashiku. I've had very similar pain for months now. I have two slipped discs. Sounds like you could have a disc slipped pressing on your nerves. By the way I don't want to sound negative or be the bearer of bad news but I have been waiting five and a half months and have another wait of around 3 months. Just now Iam awaiting surgery on my back but all in could be up too a ten month wait. In my experience anyway. There is no hurry even for a risky area like your back.

You don't say exactly where on your butt your pain is but, there is a muscle that is deep in your butt called a piriformis muscle. It is not uncommon to have pain in this muscle. Or your pain may originate in your back and radiate to your butt and down your leg. Either way the first step is of course identifying the source. Then you will want to try different things to elevate the pain. Frankly (and remember I'm no dr) I think I would try a steroid injection in my back or a trigger point injections in the piriformis muscle first. Your dr will know what is best in your situation. He may even refer you to a specialist. But in the end, should you consider taking opiates for the pain remember it is a life changing decision with potential bad consequences like addiction. I'm not knocking it, they are sometimes needed very badly. I need them and I take them but that's because I could not function with out them. But I always take them the way they are prescribed.
