Have you "pulled" any back muscles?....That can be very painful...Both Heat and Cold applied intermitently will help reduce your pain and your blood to circulate in that area and, then, your muscle will repair itself...Your GP can prescribe pain pills to help...Also, there are over the counter muscle relaxers that might help....If xrays don't show bone cracks or breaks, normally you have muscle and possibly nerve problems...GOOD LUCK!.....

Hi Jennifer. I would if I was you get an MRI scan done. It is as much use as paper window wipers on a motorbike trying to diagnose back conditions with X-ray as I know this from experience. May 2016 I had a severe lumbar lateral shift(full body moved to the right) and after visiting my doctor who did X-rays and bloods said I was completely normal even though a child could plainly see and differ. 5 weeks later due to this poor diagnosis and strain my L5/S1 disc totally blew which in my opinion was due to poor diagnosis. As of now the 23rd Nov Iam still trying to get seen by health professionals though have to say i suffered extreme muscle/nerve/lower back pain for 4 months nonstop day in day out and hope I never again. Anyone who reads this if a health professional mentions X-ray to diagnose your condition either walk away or demand an MRI scan as X-rays can miss a multitude of things that are wrong. I wish someone gave me this info at the beginning as it would never have got the stage it is now. I learned this the hard and painful way. Hope you get a resolution to your condition shortly. All the best.

Hi Jennifer Hey no problem at all. I wish I knew all that when this began with myself. I would definitely push for an MRI as it's only thing that will at least show what is causing or could be causing it. You might be getting pain in places but doesn't necessarily mean it's that spot. Ive a lumbar shift to the right and blown disc on left. Iam getting a lot of symptoms in other places even though it's the lower disc. Like hip pain outer knee and ankle pain. Numb foot and toes. Can't lift my left foot or toes if flat on the ground and pins and needles at times also. If it's the disc pressing hard on nerves it can cause pain tightness etc in other places. Good luck with it and hope you get somewhere.

is the pain to one side or the other?

does a specific activity cause it to act up?

Hi,  I have acute and chronic pain in my mid-back EXACTLY where a bra would sit.  I have suffered with this or two years now and cannot wear a bra as the pain around my back is agony.  Even a soft elastic comfort bra really hurts but I have to wear something as it's too depressing not to.  Tell me, do you also have pain when you sit back in a chair and that part of your back makes contact?  I can tolerate deep massage on this area with no problem but the bra wearing and sitting back is agony - does this ring a bell with you.  I have been sent to various specialists, had an MRI and full body bone scan both of which showed nothing wrong.  I have had every kind of medication they could throw at me to no avail and am currently on morphine patches and cocodamol with not much relief.  The doctors say that as everything else has been ruled out the pain must be neuropathic but I will never accept that I was fit and healthy one day and in so much pain the next without any reason.  I have now insisted on seeing a neurologist for a definitive diagnosis (I believe they should have sent me to see one ages ago) however, because I have already had extensive tests they say I have to pay privately which I am going to do and have an appointment in December.  I really feel for you as to be in so much pain is really debilitating- do let me know if you have the same hyper-sensitivity across the bra area and in the meantime good luck and take care.

Jennifer I've been a back pain sufferer (lower back) for 10 years so I speak with experience. First thing you need to do is go see a nuerologist. He/she will order an MRI. That is a must have. As others have mentioned on their comments a flat X-ray will show very little wrong with the back. A nuero will want an MRI.

Another thing to know is that where you are hurting is theleast likely place for back pain. I'm not saying that it isn't possible, I'm simply saying that the the lower back is the most common then the neck and finally the middle of the back. It just doesn't happen very often. Which may be why the doctor or PT thinks its referred pain.

Which brings me to the PT. If what he/she has you doing is hurting. Tell him/her. PT should NEVER hurt. He/she can alter the exercise so that it won't hurt or give you a differet one that will benefit you the same way. If your PT doesn't do that, get another.

And lastly use muscle relaxers and whatever pain killers that are not opiates as much as you can before you allow yourself to go on opiates. I've been on opiates for about 8 years and it is a complicated issue. There are all kinds of rules and regulations and right now the whole opiate world is changing. So do what you can to steer clear of them.

Best of luck to you. I hope your back resolves without it becoming a life long issue.

I am thinking...are you able to pull both scapula towards the center of your back? can you shrug your shoulders? when she pressed on your back did the pain radiate?

Your pain isin the thoracic region of the spine...unlike the cervical and lumbar spine which allow a lot of movement, the thoracic spine give us rigidity and stability. The first 9 ribs begin at the thoracic spine and come around to join at the sternun making a cage of protection for the heart and lungs.

You have an important nerve that comes out between C5 and T1.
