Bruising and Amitriptyline

Posted , 6 users are following.

I take 75 mil a night. Don't get too drowzy but extreme dry mouth, scratchy throat and raspy voice. I now have been getting painful spots blisters on tongue and mouth....but a concern is that the last few weeks I have been getting many many bruises in odd places...legs, arms, belly but don't remember getting injured or hitting anything. My legs are starting to look like pokks dots and people are looking at me strangely when the see the bruises on my arms _(because most of them are small, dark and round like finger marks). I am not being abused. I asked my neurologist if this could be caused by the Amitriptyline he said no. My family doctor ordered blood tests but all were ok. Just wanting to know if anyone else has this side effect?

I used to get very dry mouth, white spots in my mouth and throat, sore throat and kept losing my voice. I was sent to a ear nose and throat specialist and he told me it was the amitriptoline.

I also put on lots of weight.

Now if I take more than 20ml my hands shake.although amitriptoline is good and helps me sleep ( I have chronic pain ) I am trying to come off it.

I take 10ml every other night ( 6.30pm at night.).... hope you get some help ... holly

Hello Elizabeth, I have been on Amitryptaline for about 18years & the side affects are terrible. I also had Bruises , sore mouth , ie Blisters inside my mouth plus after a while I started getting very painful & sore Blisters on my Vagina, this has been pure hell for me. Blood test showed nothing , A DERMATOLOGIST examined me & did not understand the Blisters either, but, I have realised that over the years it was definately the AMITRYPTALINE causing my problems. My general helth was always excellent until I started on the Amitryptaline & even asked to come off it . My Doctor also said no the Tablets were not the cause & my Neurologist told me to stay on them. After so many years of being on these horrific tablets I tried to come off them with horrendous results , so I had to stay on them as the withdrawel symptoms are terrible/horrendous. Well needless to say I got really fed up with all the sores on my Vagina getting bigger & more pain so, on the 22nd of July 2016 I made an appointment with a ady Doctor at my surgery & asked her for help by replacing my Amitriptaline with Fluorexetine/ PROZAC which she did, I started to come off slowly but, in the end I thought well I am on PROZAC now so I am going to go FULL COLD TURKEY, it is hard ,very hard but, now ten days on I feel there is no going back even though the withdrawal symptoms are terrible , especially the Hot & old sweats plus the pain joint. The Doctor also mentioned to me that AMITRPTALINE IS A BAD DRUG & HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT I COME OFF THEM ASAP as they are no good as you age with the terrible symptoms that this tablet causes , Plus now the weight I gained is now fallingoff by the  day , my swollen feet are going down & I know for a fact that my Kidney functions are working much better. I hope this helps, I was on 100mg for years & then gradually dropped the dosage. Doctors cannot tell you the side affects of these drugsafter years of use but other users   can tell you AMITRYPTALINE IS A TERRIBLE DRUG WITH TERRIBLE SIDE AFFECTS. So try to come off them now & insist that you have PROZAC which is much safer Kindest  Regards Jackie.

I would say you are having a reaction from the amitriptyline,I don't have much faith in neuro's when it comes to treating migrains, or anxiety. You get much better care from your family doctor.

Amitriptyline is a very old drug. It is every bit as safe as the others. They all cause dry month. If you have a symptom out of the ordinary, then it's not right for you. Go to something else.

    Hi Elizabeth

I am writing from the other side of the world.  I have similar bruising to what you have. I have many bruises that look as if I have had a thumb pressed into my skin. First of all, the doctor suggested that I leave off the fish oil tablets I was taking. No improvement with the bruising. Then she reduced the aspirin that I was taking, from 100 mgs to a 75 mg tablet once a day. No change, and then I tried only taking the aspirin on three nights a week, but still no improvement. Today the doctor has rung and wondered about the amytriptaline that I have been taking for the last six years for pain. I am only on half a 10mg tablet now and have decided to try and wean myself off the tablets, first by taking a quarter of the 10mg and then finishing off using them. I am hoping that I can still sleep and that the pain doesn't require their use again. I wear longs most of the time as I am embarrassed by the look of my legs. I have had blood tests but nothing was wrong in that direction. I shall follow the suggestions that readers give to you. Good luck!

Now you got me thinking, I have been on this for 8 yrs, and I have brusies all over. My lower legs are a mess. Hum....I wonder. My body hurts, and I attribute all of this, because I'm a cleaning lady.Hum....I wonder. I will certainly bring all this up at my next GP appt. Thanks for saying that Prozac will work too. I also have suffered from major anxiety, and I don't want to upset the great apple cart I have been riding for 8 yrs. Ya know when you get that under control, and are feeling good, you don't want to do anything that might change it. But like I tell everybody else, if you need it done, then do it. I will take my own advice. Thank you for this info.

    Hi Elizabeth

I meant to say that I have been mystified about my bruising and have eliminated fish oil and aspirin as causing the problem. I can only suspect that my 5mg of amitrip at night is the trouble maker. The large bruises don't seem to fade but the thumb type dark ones go after a few days. Is this the same problem that you have?  Barbara

Hello Barbera, I was on AMITRYPTALINE FOR MANY YEARS & THE SIDE EFFECTS ARE HORRIFIC, sorry about higher case text.

I suffered terrible bruising expecially large bruises & as you say the Thumb ones went after a few days. The sweats were horrific as well as the dry dry mouth on awakening mornings & many times I knew that my breath was smelling. I am off them now but, at times after a very restless nights sleep I am sometimes tempted to go back on Amitryptaline, but, I will persevere & try my hardest not to go down that route, but it still hard having come off them, damn tablets, GOOD & BAD EFFECTS, From Jackie
