Can a stomach virus cause chronic tonsillitis?

Hi there,

First time posting on here so forgive me if I miss anything out. 8 months ago I caught a really horrible stomach bug from work, at the time had bad diarrhea and felt exhausted. The bug cleared up after a week or so but since then have felt fatigued all the time. Over the last few months my symptoms haveadvanced to include included throat bleeding, tonsil stones, digestion problems, lower abdominal pain (right side), dehydration.

I've been to the GP on numerous occasions, first time they thought it might be post nasal drip, then chronic fatigue syndrome. Had pretty much all the tests done, mono, thyroid, diabetes, lupus, full bloods, throat swabs, stool samples (calprotectin incl), ultrasound and all have been fine. This week I've been to see an ENT specialist who has diagnosed me with chronic tonsillitis, and has recommended a tonsillectomy. I'm relieved to finally have a diagnosis but still want to see if there's any more tests that can be done in particular regarding the gastro side of things as that's where it all seems to have originated from? Having a colonoscopy in a couple of months to see if the virus has caused any damage but do any of these symptoms point to a particular virus/bacteria? I'm just wondering if the chronic tonsillitis is the cause or a symptom of something else?

My question is whether it's possible the stomach bacteria/virus could have caused the tonsillitis and whether anyone has been through a similar experience/ has any clues about what the original virus/bacteria could be?

Thanks in advance

Well, there is something called the "hundred day flu". It may start as a cold and turn into a flu and just when you think you are over the flu, you get a cold, or sore throat for a week, then when one is over that, it is the flu again and it goes on for about a hundred days. It must be just a really bad bug and it is not just one person in the family that gets it...it is everyone. It also happened at Zellers so we stopped getting on elevators with people, keeping back and we even went around and washed all of the telephones that we share because it just went around and around. Your throat should not be bleeding. It is common for the tonsils to be "blood red" are you sure that this was what your doc said or were you coughing blood? Mono and thyroid tests are not exactly accurate. Some docs rely upon the feel of the throat rather than a negative test. The thyroid uses up B12 and if one's B12 is low they will be extremely tired which means that the doc should send a blood sample for microscopic exam to see if your blood cells are oval...a sign of low B12. Write down what you eat because, in addition to having the flu, your stomache may now be prone to be upset when you eat things like cabbage raw or cooked and other people will complain when they eat beef of stomache aches? You should try smaller meals for acouple of months and chew slowly and drink a lot of water. Everyone should have a colonscopy at least once especially after 50. There is the long one and the short one which are usually used to check out any cancer or blockage. It sounds like you are on the right track. If everything checks out okay...it must may take time to get over things and you need to be patient with yourself.

I know this reply is horribly out of date and I hope by now your healthhas improved. I just wanted to say that I experienced almost identical symptoms to you. Really bad stomach virus with diarrhea and appalling vomiting. Took several weeks to get my guts back to anywhere near normal and the accompanyng fatigue was awful. Then I developed a sore throat accompanied by white spots on the back of it. GP' seemed reluctant to 'see ' them when I explained what the symptoms were but referred me to hospital because of my enlarged lymph gland. I tried explaining that my health had been poor since the stomach virus but he didn't seem to join up the dots. Am about to have an untrasound on my lymph, have still got a sore throat and the next step is a biopsy on my gland. Its awful....all the waiting and seeming lack of knowledge to put the symptoms together into a diagnosis. Anyway,I'm only writing to sympathise and hope you are over the spell of ill health ! Best wishes

Hello, apologies this time for my delay in getting back to you, I appreciate you getting in touch to share your story, it's hard work being undiagnsosed sometimes! I'm still having investigations, there are some pancreatic checks that they want to do and I'm on Creon and Omerazapole atm to see if that helps with the stomach conditions. Otherwise, I'm just trying to get on with things as best can be, still get tired an awful lot of the time but live a pretty clean life now (no drinking, smoking, eat OK), and have learnt to be more patient with limitations. Hope that things have improved for you and that they have been able to perhaps give you some answers by now. All the best smile
