Can Torticollis have a lasting effect?

Hi,

i had torticollis three years ago, which i just woke up with one moring, and was a severe pain, i couldn't even move my head, and i think it was provoked by an extremely heavy bag i carried to school everyday. However, ever since, i've been more prone to neck pain/aches more often, even though i have changed bags and no longer carry such a heavy weight. Can the condition effect you further on in life? or come back mildly?

If you google Torticollis, I think you'll find reasonable descriptions of its possible long tern effects.  Apparently,  sleeping in a draught can be a major aggravator.  Otherwise best see your GP for advise,  in case there's another issue which was missed first time round.

    Good luck

Spasmodic torticollis is a condition in which the neck muscles cause the head to turn or rotate to the side. It is also known as cervical dystonia and is referred to as Torticollis by many. This movement disorder is caused by dysfunction of the brain. Torticollis can also come on suddenly in children and adults due to spasm in the SCM muscle. Reasons for this could be small injury caused by sudden movement, or sometimes by an infection in the neck or damage to the bones. This needs assessment by an expert. There is no uniform treatment for ST, but oral medications are usually the first line of defence. While there is no cure, many people with ST can get relief from the pain and disability caused by this neurological disorder using a combination of treatment including medications, botulinum toxin injections, physical therapy, alternative treatments and stress reduction techniques. Applying heat, traction to the neck and massage to help relieve head and neck pain might also work. Stretching exercises and neck braces can help with muscle spasm. Hope you are already working with your PT for same.
