Besides autoimmune conditions, hyperthyroidism can be causes by thyroiditis, an acute viral inflammation of the thyroid gland, post partum thyroiditis after pregnancy and from thyroid nodules.  The treatments offered are medications like methimazole or propylthiouracil to block the excess thyroid hormone, RAI or surgery and then thyroid hormone replacement.  There are alternative treatments which are naturopathic such as Bugleweed,  Motherwort and Melissa.  I had Graves disease and I used a combination of prescribed meds along with natural supplements) (Methimazole along with L-Carnitine a natural amino acid and vitamin D and acetyl-l-Carnitine).

I was subclinical hyperthyroid(elevated free T3) for a while and then went normal again without the help of any meds.
