IBS and anal spasms

Was diagnosed with IBS about 1-1/2 years ago after having had some odd symptoms appear at the same time. First was kind of like a stitch on my left side that I felt for a few days, change in stool shape and color and worst of all intense anal spasm. The spasms don't come that often but they only happen in the middle of the night while I"m sleeping. They are extremely painful and take anywhere from a 1/2 hour to an hour to subside. Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what have they found effective to help relieve the problem. My doctor gave me a prescription for Donnatal extended release tabs but they've been discontinued and to honest I don't think they really helped any way.

    Hi Sonja,

From what you say it could be likely you have a parasitic infection. It would be worth your while to rule this

out I feel. I'm going down this route at the moment with my chronic fatigue.

Hi Sonja, there is something called Proctalgia Fugax which is a painful spasm of the rectal muscles and is thought to be associated to IBS. If you look on this site for 'Proctalgia fugax and anal pain' you should be able to read more about it. Since I've had IBS I get Levator Ani Syndrome, which is a similar problem, but, rather than a severe spasm, it is an ongoing ache in the rectal area which really gets me down at times. Worse when sitting. Again, it's associated with IBS. I'm going through a slight flare of my IBS at the moment and this has been one of the symptoms I've been coping with for a few weeks. I would go back to your GP and discuss this further with him/her. Hope things soon improve for you.

Thanks for the posts. Karl - the stitch is like a little stabbing pain or twitch underneath my left rib cage. Under the right ribs you might want to get your gallbladder checked.

I have never heard of anal spasm with IBS. Spasms are usually nerve related, trapped nerve etc Or lack of fluid, electrolytes or muscle tension. Cramp is a form of spasm.

Maybe youre getting night cramps and subconciously tensing your buttocks or intestines. The spasm is an involuntary twitching of the muscle fibres. The ibs pain in stomach and cramp is a form of spasm, hence anti spasmodics medication prescribed.

Everybody gets spasms, its natural but sometimes ibs can affect the whole digestive system in many ways.

I was diagnosed with IBS many years ago and have recently begun experiencing the same sort of spasms you described. My doctor has prescribed dicyclomine HCI, which is the generic for bentyl, I believe. It's the same sort of cramping I experience during flare ups, only much, much lower. My mother and sister both have experienced this, so you are not alone. The dicyclomine helps.
