I want to buy a blood glucose monitor

Posted , 3 users are following.

My son has Type 1 dibetes and it is very well controlled so he does not bother to monitor his glucose levels.  I have seen the detailss of the new 'Freestyle Libre flash glucose Monitor' and it seems like a giat step forward.  Has anyone on the forum used it yet?

My daughter (26 yo) is also type 1, and I too came across the Libre and thought that it looked like a leap forward.

I took the plunge and parted with the money. Without doubt one of the best decisions I've ever made!

It has completely changed Emma's life, it is every bit as good as we'd hoped - and then some!

If you're still considering it, send me a private message and I'll put you in touch with Emma.

Thankyou.  I had forgotten I'd asked!  Your answer is v. timely as I

had just started worrying again.  I dont think this forum is set up to exchange private messages so now I will go to the internet and manufacturer and NHS

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I believe that Abbott are running at capacity currently, and have stopped accepting new customers. They control supply directly, and allow registered customers to order 1 month's supply of sensors, just once per month. The product has been so successful that they simply can't manufacture enough to meet demand.

Some registered customers have turned to profiteering on eBay, so you should be able to get supply through there, but at massively inflated prices, and with no supply security.

It's probably still worth registering with Abbott directly so that when their capacity increases you are at least "on the list", to do this, simply go through the motions of placing an order on their site. The process will automatically halt, with an explanation message, as soon as you've registered your email address.

Again, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I've just checked with Abbott, the official wording is as follows:-

Thank you for your interest in the FreeStyle Libre

      Flash Glucose Monitoring System.

Due to high demand for our product, we are currently unable to accept orders from new customers.

Please leave your email address so we can add you to the waiting list and contact you as soon as product becomes available.

We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your interest in the FreeStyle Libre system.

Why buy one if you see your diabetic specialist they should give you one for free because you should be watching your son to see if he has any hypos libre are offering them for free

The Libre is not currently available via NHS (or certainly not in Wales). If Abbott (the manufacturer) are offering them for free, could you advise on where this offer is available please.
