Sexual dysfunction/loss of libido on Fluoxetine

Posted , 3 users are following.

I've been on Fluoxetine 20mg for just over 9 weeks after trying many different antidepressants since March last year and having no luck. It's working really well and I finally feel back to my old self; however, I've completely lost my libido and find it really difficult to orgasm which is beginning to get me and my boyfriend down. I'm a 22 year old female and previously my boyfriend and I had a great sex life, even in the lowest points of my depression. I really want to get my sex life back on track again but am reluctant to try yet another antidepressant.

Has anybody experienced this and found anything to help with it or do I just have to wait it out?

Hi there. I have been on fluoxetine for a few years and struggle to reach orgasm. I know have a partner and she thinks it's her fault. I  am feeling so much better in myself so am now weaning myself off them under doctors supervision. They were also making me very sleepy/lazy! I don't know if there are any versions of these drugs that dont mess with your libido, and they are even taken by porn actors to delay things!!! I have recently taken up cycling and that helps with depression a lot, with no side effects:-) I hope things improve for you as depression can be cruel. You show your fella these posts as he should not be getting down with the situation, as it doesn't help you!!! All the best, and good luck. Ian

Hi there, I've been looking through the forum on Fluoxetine and could only find this one on the side effects on sexual dysfunction / loss of libido. I've had the same problem since I started taking Fluoextine, even when i'm only on the 20mg dose. Has anyone else had similar side effects? Or any advice how to help with it?

The only thing that's helped for me is to come off it unfortunately. I went down to 20mg every other day and my sexual function returned but my mood slipped so now I'm back on it and the sexual dysfunction is back sad

Thanks for your reply, sorry to hear that happened when you went back on the fluoxetine. I read in one book that the herbal medicine called Ginkgo Biloba (they sell it at Holland & Barrett health shops)  can help with sexual dysfunction. I tried it briefly but didn't give it long enough to see if it made a difference. You need to take about 3 tablets of Gingko a day for it to take effect and I didn't want to be taking so many tablets all the time!
