I quite new to this af rubbish i have been on warfarin flecanide bisopradol still on the last two,all meds have different side effects for different people i am fifty two can not even roll a ceiling at work without tight chest and shortness of breath in a morning feels like i have not slept feel knackered nearly all the time in my opinion af is horrible i would sooner have had a heart attack so they would look at my heart properly in bored of telling the medical proffession how i feel what my symptoms are etec etc.unlike cancer i would imagine af gets no public attention time i hate my af with a vengance its stops me earning a full living also a full life even walking upstairs is hard the wife has atarted to wash the pots so i can rest come on folks at 52. I should still have a decent level of fitness if they told me cutting my arm or leg off would cure me of this af i would do it without any thought i am pestering every week to push my doctor heart specialist to sort me out if you take a certain meds with no side effects good for you me i would sooner shove the lot in the bin and get me life back .i stopped smoking in august last year when i started with it and have not drawn a decent breath since that day they told me at the hospital i would feel better for stopping i will tell you the real reason i will never smoke again is i love my wife , children and grandchildren to much to smoke again plus the wife saud ahe would mount my family jewels on the fire place if i did.all af sufferers have diffent levels of af i wish for none so my vote is a big fat no to AF

Please don't just come of the Bisoprolol talk to your GP first your AF could come back with a vengeance, you don't say what mg you are on? if a high dose then cut it down, I am on 2.5mg Bis and I am about to cut down to 1.25 on agreement from doc, I don't want my AF to come back and I remember that when I realised what the rotten side effects were in the beginning I just stopped and whithin a very short time my heartrate shot up to 190 again, so please think very carefully before stopping suddenly.

Hi  I am so sorry you are feeling so bad - I have only been on the one med since I was diagnosed (still not symptom free though) but I know there are lots of others that you might tolerate better so another visit to your gp to find out your options might be a starting place.  Have .you seen a consultant yet or are you on the waiting list?  I know what you mean about AF until I joined this forum I didnt realise just how many people have this.  It is definitely not something you hear about unless you have it!!  I have found this forum really good - at least it is somewhere you can talk to other peope who might have an idea of how you feel and what you are going through.  Good luck and I hope you get some resolution.

So sorry you have such bad effects from your AF - have they not tried cardioversion? Sounds like it would be worth a try?  I only found out about my AFwhen I went for a minor op, now on warfarin which seems to suit me. I have never had any symptoms with my AF, but they found I had a leaky valve after I had a cough for two years and they finally listened with a stethoscope!!! (A cough is caused by fluid on the lung  due to the leaky valve). Had the op to repair it last January and they did a maize procedure to try and cure my AF, wore a monitor for 2 weeks recently and due to get results in March to see if AF is gone - fingers crossed!!! I can't take bisoprolol due to bad side effects so my heartrate is always high (100 plus) but I feel blessed my valve was repaired successfully, but again I had no symptoms of the leaky valve apart from the cough so just shows these things can go undetected for yeRs,my hey said I may have  been born with it!!!!  Have you had a heart scan?  Seems maybe they need to investigate a bit more? Could be that the bisoprolol doesn't suit you, it is renowned for causing extreme tiredness.  I send my best wishes to you, I can only imagine how awful it must be to have this level of breathlessness, I would ask to be referred for a heart scan to find out what's going on - and maybe replace the bisoprolol and see how that goes.

It sounds as if you have paroxysmal AFib, that is it comes and goes and you can often get quite a length of time before another attack.  I had this complaint over three years and was treated with Flecainide, Bisoprolol and Warfarin.  I used to feel extremely ill during an attack.   Of these three, the Bisoprolol was definitely the one which made me tired all the time.  Don't take yourself off any medication without discussing it with your doctor, but do tell him you would like to try an alternative.  An ablation is often a cure for many but not for all, but with this condition, there are many treatments and drugs and it is a question of finding out what is successful for you and what you can tolerate.

Many thanks for that all was well upto a few weeks ago then its been nearly every day its so draining off to doctors monday see what the scores are there

I can't remember now from other posts what other heart tests you had? It sounds like you should have a thorough cardiac check up.  Did you have an echo cardiogram?

You might like to try propanolol, an old fashined beta blocker that' been around for a long time and seems gentler on the system! Bisoprolol and many of the other beta blockers are cardiac specific and they seem to hit harder in terms of side effects, to those people who ae sensitive to them.  I hope you get some help soon.

    Atrial Fibrillation Hi Popeye,

I have read your post and the others with interest as I have suffered with all the problems you are having with this drug and others. I am 72 and my problems started back in 1995 and was admitted to hospital, there I was put amiodarone 200mg, I was fine on this drug for a good few years until I started shaking and was taken off the drug but after 3 months the Af returned. Since that time I have been on many different drugs which all made me very ill and I became worse and worse. 18months ago I was told that I have developed heart failure and I am convinced that the drugs I had been taking had caused this to happen

In the last 2 Years I have hardly been able to go out, I couldn’t walk more that a few yards with out becoming exhausted. The last drug I was on in November was Bisoprolol, I have been on this before and dreaded taking it as it made me so ill, just as has with you. After taking it for only 2 weeks I found I was having difficulty going for a pee and thought I was developing prostrate problems, I ended up in A&E. There I was told I had very enlarged prostate and to stop taking the Bisoprolol as this was causing it. After 2 weeks everything in that department was back to normal. Unfortunately the Af returned and becoming much worse in early Dec. I had a very bad time, I did not think I would make it to Christmas as each day the Af was so bad.  My heart rate was going out of control, running at 198 beats per minute and my heart was shaking like a jelly and I could feel myself going unconscious. At this my wife sent for an ambulance and I was taken to the acute cardiac unit. I was told by 3 doctors that I needed a pacemaker and put on a heart ward, I was in the ward for 8 days until the doctor on the ward told me I would be fitted with ICD pacemaker implant (that’s a pacemaker & defibrillator) that was on the 8th Dec, I was only in hospital for 2 days.

I now have my life back and feel alive for the first time since 2103, I can now take my dog for short walks and go shopping with my wife (wow Fresh air) and the only tablets that I take are warfarin and aspirin. Each day I am getting better and stronger but I do have to pace myself, when the summer comes I am hoping that I will be able to get back in the garden and perhaps take my wife on a holiday in the Uk as I have said its been over 2 years since I have been able to do any of these things.

To you all suffers with Af and to you Popeye talk to your consultant

(Not your GP) to see if a pacemaker it will help you all those who suffer Af, be pushy and I mean pushy, as they will try to fob you off on to drugs as they did with me. This is not to alarm you but Af can kill you if left unchecked and I think so can these drugs. My Dr told me recently that the drugs did not cause my problem it certainly contributed to it.

I had been trying to get a pacemaker for 5 years so it just happened by calling an ambulance it got me to the right people at the right time. I do hope you find this of some help to you all.

These are some of the drugs that I have been on and which have all give me the worse time of my life and I think made my health problems much worse and I have no doubt that they would have killed me.

Ivabradine. Nebivolol. Carvedilol. Candesartan. Amiodarone. Bisoprolol and more but I cannot remember them all just as a matter of interest all drugs ending LoL are beta blockers and I was told by the hospital not a lot of people can tolerate them also alcohol can make the side effect of these drugs much worse

That's the same story for me.  Three years over which I had two ablations, two cardioversions and lots of drugs, including the dreaded Bisoprolol.  One morning my heart just went crazy, in and out of different arrhythmias and I went in through A&E and came out with a dual chamber pacemaker.  I am off all the drugs, except BP and Pradaxa which is an anticoagulant.  My AV node was ablated so that the upper chambers are left to do their own thing more or less disconnected,  but the lower chambers are paced.  I feel about 90 percent better but still a bit strange when I am aware of the pacemaker blocking out AFib attacks. End of the road for my AFib treatment now but I still like to contribute to these forums.

Hello josephine glad to hear you are well is it just me or is it a long road im off bisopradol as of this morning i hate the bloody stuff been on it twice now and both times felt dreadfull

I agree with Popeye - the difference in coming off that drug was like morning breaking after a dark night.  I got so depressed at my lack of energy and interest, but I am now back to my old self.  My pacemaker is set to cope with up to 115 beats per minute, so above that, I would probably have to consider a beta blocker, but you can bet it wouldn't be Bisoprolol .....!
