three weeks after Fundoplication sugery, still have reflux.

hi, I am a 25 year old female.  I have had reflux for the past few years and threes weeks ago i Finally had my surgery for laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication. Initially post op I didn't have any symptoms of reflux howevr recently the symptoms have come back and I am just so upset. I have been taking Gaviscon but was told by my discharge doctor not to take any Zantac, but I am really suffering. I was wondering if anyone has been through this, and I was hoping for some advice. I feel so down that I have be no through this for nothing, I have obviously been following the post op surgery which is just bland and minimal food, yet I still feel like this.

    Wow, I'm so sorry to hear this, I am due to have a Nissans next month as I've got acute reflux that fills my mouth all day every day and I've suffered with it for almost 3 years, I really believed the op would be the cure I needed but I'm worried now it won't stop my problem, did you have a full wrap? I've read that sometimes its not a complete wrap. What has your doctor said?

      Oh no, I don't want to put you off having it!i have read a lot of reviews which have all been positive and it may well work for you. I am going to ring my surgeon and see when I am to go back and see him to see what he says at about the situation. It tends to be worse in the morning so I have ordered a wedge pillow that I have read good reviews on!

    Very quickly as I'm in a dash.  A friend of mine had your same surgery and returning reflux much as you did within weeks afterwards.  She was told by her surgeon that 'this wasn't possible' as the operation had gone well.  Close to a year on she has had breathing problems.  She then had a CT scan and the HH had clearly opened up again and the liquid had gotten into her lungs.  This has led to a life threatening situation.  She is now to have the Nissen surgery again in a few weeks and has had three days worth of steroid infusions.  Because of the lung situation they have given her basically three years to live.  I would insist on action promptly - i.e., NOW - while you can.  No one had been there to warn my friend who is - it must be said - considerably senior to your good self.

      Don't mean to sound thick, but what is HH? and is it really responsible of you to scare the crap out of people who have just had the op or people due the op, how old is your friend? I think you need to put a more expansive post if you're going to say such dreadful things, even if they are true. All surgery carries a risk but the odds of what has happened to your friend is probably pretty slim, she has my sympathy.

      Oh, woe that sounds really really really severe! Thanks for your response and best wishes to your friend. It has terrified me beyond belief but I didn't have a Hiatus Hernia so hopefully I'm not in the same boat.

    I had the same operation in December 2014 and it took me over 8 weeks to recover from the surgery.  I would like to say that it was a complete success, but alas, I still have problems eating but find pasta is easy - as long as it is covered in sauce.  I still got a lot of acid so my specialist put me on Lansoprazole and this seems to keep the acid in check.  I still heart burn every now and then but just take gavison - the granuals are great but are very hard to get hold of.

      Hi Jody, thank you for your post, I'm terrified of the surgery and the last thing I need is someone banging on about the op causing life threatening symptoms, did you lose weight, I'm not very big so thats a concern aswell.

      Thanks for you response, it's made me feel a bit better. I am just upset how the surgeon said post op I won't need any meds. I was on 30 mg twice a day of lansoprazole pre op which didnt seem to help, and on top of that I was taking zantac regularly and gaviscon. And pretty much whatever else I could get my hands on. Have they said you will need to continue on lansoprazole for ever?

      I lost 3 stone before I was diagnosed with achalasia but my weight is steady now - the op was worth it as I could not keep down anything - now I just have to remember to chew properly and eat easier foods - bread, one of my favourite foods, is very hard to eat, but at least I can eat now.  I dont know how long I will have to take the lansaprozile but as it dissolves on the tongue, it does not bother me

      Hi, sorry to harp on about the weight loss, can you tell me what weight you were when you first had the op, its just that I'm quite slim and I'm just concerned about losing lots of weight.

      I have lost about 10lb since mine Pam, I'm only 8st 1 now. I tried to eat loads of fatty stuff pre op to prepare myself for this. It says on a lot of places to eat 6-8 small meals a day but I cannot stomach that much!! Please let me know how you get on!!

      Many thanks for the info, I have also been eating like a maniac in preparation but us thin gals can only cram in so much, I'll keep you posted.
