Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It reduces the amount of acid production in your stomach. I don’t see how a PPI would help with a blockage in your oesophagus unless of course it wasn’t a blockage and what you are experiencing is acid reflux. Even so that seems a high dose. What did the doctor actually diagnose? DId he/she mention H. Pylori infection or an ulcer?

Thanks for your reply, the doctor said there was a narrowing of the oesophagus possibly due to scar tissuecuased by acid reflux from an hiatal hernia.

So have you been prescribed a proton pump inhibitor before? If you have a hiatal hernia and reflux I'm guessing you have so maybe this high dose is to stop further irritation/inflammation of the oesophagus in the short term. Have you been advised to seek further help when you return to the UK?

I have been prescribed cimetedine before. yes, i have been advised to speak to my doctor when i get back to the UK. thanks for the possible reason for the high dose.

That sounds lilke good advice. Wondering if a change of diet on your holiday has contributed to your current discomfort. Are you eating richer foods, drinking more alcohol, having treats like ice cream, chocolate?  I too have a hh and reflux and was diagnosed a low dose of Omeprazole but did not like the side effects. So I set about countering the symptoms by diet alone and am pleased to say it has worked. I think this will vary person to person but I find the main culprit is anything which contains sugar or sugar alcohols.

There is definitely a change of diet, but i try to be careful what i eat and find certain exercises virtually stop the reflux, i am not keen on taking the drugs but i dont want to end up on a liquid diet.

I know what you mean. I agree, exercise can help a lot to alleviate the symptoms and yes, a restrictive diet can a tad dull but it beats the pain and discomfort. I hope you can manage to enjoy the rest of your hoilday. Easier said than done but try not to worry as stress can aggravate reflux as I'm sure you know.
