No doctor, hospital, physio or pain killers please

Pardon my writing. I’m not native English speaker.

I’m female, 50, live in UK, having the second FS at the moment.

The first FS was on my right 3 years ago. I didn’t know what it was, so I went to GP(not much help), X-rayed in Hospital(painful), took a lot pain killers(didn’t work, destroyed my stomach) and did physio 6 times(delayed so much,  so no pain but didn’t make any different).

So this time when my left shoulder started uncomfortable in February I knew what it was and determined to heal by myself, no doctor, no hospital, no pain killers nor physio, with only 2 long wheat bags which I sandwich my shoulder and arm to get instant comfort.

But in mid-March, my shoulder was flare up, inflammation started. One little wrong move, I collapsed with cry and had to wait to pass the pain as you all know. Unfortunately my husband is away a lot because of his job, so I have to do everything, school run by car, housework, gardening and I work at home too. No time for FS. Especially frightening was driving. It’s dangerous to everyone.

I was desperate, so found here. One of post said someone did HRT. I knew FS was related with menopause, so I thought I can’t do anything about it, but someone did something about it.

I will never take HRT. It’s too much side effects. I don’t like chemicals including pain killers. But there are a lot menopause supplements for Hot flushes. I even sceptical about any supplements, but any little help would do, I was desperate.  So next morning after school run, I popped in a supermarket and bought one and took it.

That evening, my inflammation was gone. I could even feel it ceasing. That night I got a decent period which I hadn’t had for more than half year except a couple light ones. Since then inflammation hasn’t come back as I keep taking the supplements.

My shoulder was already damaged and frozen, so still painful and movement was limited, but no inflammation means no more collapse with cry. I can get on with my life and only way my shoulder goes will be recovery. Keep coming back inflammations make FS such difficult and long term condition.

That was one and half month ago. My shoulder and arm is still sore, uncomfortable during daytime and bit pains at night, but much better. I reckon I will enjoy summer without pain and most movement. Once pain’s gone, movement comes back that I know from the previous experience. No need painful physio.

I owe this forum. I wanted to write my experience after my FS is completely better which I think not too long, but here everyone seems taking torturous treatments, so I wanted to say there are less painful ways. I never took pain killers this time. I only do gentle stretch excises.  I hate pain. Surely pain is bad for us. I never let anyone touch my FS including so called specialists who never experienced the FS pain.

As any treatments, it might not work for you. My FS was very early stage and could be not as serious as yours. And longer you have FS, your shoulders are more damaged and frozen, so take longer to heal.

But my method is easy, cheap and no harm unless you are allergic to ingredients. There are more strong supplements in chemists and net. And there are men’s menopause supplements available by internet. Look around Amazon for the product to suit you. You can take the supplements with other treatments too.

My understanding now is that FS is same as hot flushes, just where becomes hot leads different results. Hormone level changes like our age causes heat/inflammations until body get used to the new hormone balance, so if you add and regulate hormones a little bit, it’ll be better, although FS’s damage is more serious and take longer to heal.

It’s not a miracle or instant cure, but I can bear the pain without inflammation for a couple months, especially I feel it’s getting better. Only side effects I got were that regular periods came back and so my hair. My hair was thinning as I get older.

I will keep taking the supplements until my menopause is well over to prevent further FS.

Thanks for reading. If I can help even one person, I’m happy with. Wish you all pain free summer. I love British summer. It’s not too hot and beautiful!

    Hi Sorano,

Thats very interesting I often thought it was possibly due to hormonal fluctuations, but the medical jury is out.  The obvious question is what are you taking?  Are you selling them or advertising them, or is this genuine?  Sorry to sound so sceptical, but as you know supplements are big business when people are in pain. Hopefully it is something that can help.

LOL I wish I can make money out of it!

I know supplements business is big here, because my British husband pays alot money to it. And he takes pain killers like candy. Bad for him.

I'm taking most common general one, but any menapause supplements should work, so please look around in chemists and net. You have to choose and take by yourself because I can't take any responsibility.

While I appriciate medical professionals very much, they couldn't know everything. So sometimes we have to help ourselves I think.

Hi thanks for this suggestion! I'm  going to buy some menapause supplements today & try, ..why not?! as I'm positive it's hormone related...(obviously it's different for everyone.whats best for the individual)

..I'm sick of taking painkillers. So I looked up some massage techniques which help ,FS symptoms I m also going to try this.......all makes sense to me anyway! To try alternatives first.

    thanks for sharing Louise

Geat! Stick with the supplements for a while because unless it's your hight of inflammetion time, you can't feel it's working. I don't any more.

Yes, pain killer's sickly, isn't it? I love my food too much to ruin stomack ;p

So pleased you have found something that helps.

Your post was clear and informative, no problem that English is not your first language. You wouldn't want to read anything from me in French or German! (No language skills)

I have had suregery, am on a cocktail of medicine including morphine, am having physio AND have started HRT - so support anyone finding any path that suits them to find some relief.

This forum is very supportive of everyone, whatever path they choose.

I hope you have friends local to you who can help out.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and keep taking those supplements.

Thanks! I'm a Japanese. I live long enough here, but still my kids laugh my English, warm way though. I don't mind. Any laugh is good smile

I read a lot your posts. I thought what a brave woman you are. Trying such much treatments! I respect you very much.

Hope HRT works for you. Should do. It's a menapause treatment, isn't it?

Wish you a quick recovery too!

Hi, I'm 46 years old.  I have been suffering from a few symptoms of impending menopause (as diagnosed by my gynaec) such as heavy period flow, abdominal pain 10 days before the start of every cycle etc. The Gynaec advised me to take iron supplements which almost immediately reduced these symptoms.  Besides iron, I've been taking other supplements too for about 4 months now. They include fish oil, vitamins, minerals, and calcium.  They have not brought any respite to my FS pains which I've been suffering the last 15 months.

I dont think you can mention any brand names here.  But if there is more information you can share regarding your experience with those supplements, that would be much appreciated.

I'm so sorry to hear 15 months of FS. It's awful.

Reading about hot flush supplements, it seems supplements contain something called Isoflavone is important and you haven't taken it.

So you can try supplement with that. But you should ask your gynaec before taking it.

    Update;

Its 2 months since I started to take menopause supplements. I finished the second box, so 60 days exactly.

My pain level is around 2 now if the height of inflammation time was 10. My arm is getting stronger and no problem to do driving, heavy food shopping, house works and gardening.

I can sleep reasonably well although still using few cushions to support my arm.  And when I get up, the shoulder and arm are just bit sore.

My movement is still bad. I can’t tie my hair and have to use a step to reach washing line. But now the pain is going, I can do more forceful stretching and I’m doing them.

After getting rid of the inflammation which I had for only 4 days, it took 2 months for me to come to the stage now. And it’s still not completely better. What a nasty condition FS is!

I myself am frustrated lately the natural healing progress is slow (although quicker than last time with doctor and physio :D). I have to think weekly than daily if I’m getting better. Thankfully I am. Another month, hopefully I will have no pain and most movement back. I will update my progress here.

Reading around this forum, I’m more convinced FS is related with hormone changes, otherwise how healthy sporty 40/50 years old women/ men suddenly get this condition???

Thanks for sharing, it's so informative on here, much more than at GPs or NHS 'professionals'! ...I haven't posted for a couple of weeks I've been struggling with this FS as its around 9months, & it all gets very frustrating!

Lately, I tried physio, he told me to buy a door pully to aid excercises, at my own expense, I'm trying that , though gentle Aqua excercises seem better for me, less harsh. I revisited my GP & asked about hydro dilation, she said I have to go through the physio...ie they have to refer me! To the physio I asked him, he passed me on. Said he couldn't do this referral....-!: that I had to be referred again to a specialist physio....got an appointment for July! I also asked the GP for full blood tests which I had last Friday ( Incase of any underlying problem thyroid /hormonal etc) most of this approach I've picked up on here ...though this is my 2nd FS....I'm still awake every night with pain , the same symptoms as everyone else ..the power in my arm is significantly reduced, even with excercise & am struggling along best I can ;/ Ithink my family are tired of hearing about it, As am I!

I'm still very surprised at how little acknowledgement & or support is given via the usual medical routes, considering it's so common yet unbearably painful & dibilitating!

take care and keep us posted on

Thank you very much for your support smile

I know NHS is not supportive to FS, but they did wonder for my child's injury. I appriciate that very much. I think something doctors know what to do, other they still don't. And unfortunately FS is one of them.

Anyway however painful it is, FS is not life threatening. It will cure itself. So it's understandable NHS doesn't want to waste time and resource for it.

But meanwhile, I LOLed you said that your family are tired of hearing about it. It's same as my family :D And I'm tired of the pain too!

I started this post hopeing that someone would try menapuse supplements and work. So I'm not an isorated case. If so, maybe less people have to suffer unnessesary pain in future.

I'm not a medical professional, but words spread eventually if it works, don't they? smile

It only stop inflammation, recovery is still long way, but if you can prevent inflammation, could prevent FS.

I don't know if it works after having FS for 9 long months like you. Your inflammation might finished and you are maybe in frozen stage?

But no harm to try, my supplements are only £4 per month, I bought them 3 for 2, so less than £3/month. :D It's cheaper than prescription!

Since doctors denied FS is hormonal, I can't recommend it except in my post, but I hope someone will try. If so, please stick with it for at least a couple month and tell me here!

You take care yourself too. Whatever treatment you go for, I hope it will work for you!

Hi again, I got some supplements though I'm unsure if they are making it feel better yet only started taking them a couple of week ago. Though I've noticed my wrist is worse the movement is restricted and now am getting neck pain, obviously because of the FS Frozen stage, I've insisted on a full range of blood tests which I haven't had the results for yet, and am referred to a shoulder physio specialist through not till end of June...nothing in between, then I'm pushing for the hydro dilation procedure. This is really getting unbearable sleepless nights every night, and the movement part, I' can't work properly, or any. Hobbies &/or sport or driving riding a bike etc etc is just out of the question! Yet at the same time because there's nothing visible on the outside...I get literally zero sympathy! Im trying to manage but honestly wished there was more support & understanding for this dibilitating condition...from anywhere! I can't beleive with it being so common it's not dealt with more efficiently (I totally support the NHS as being amazing btw ) just the sharing of best practice amongst health professionals would help us get it sorted without so much suffering...mainly in silence! LOL!wink

keep me me posted take big carel(rubbish typing...blame FS. )

Thanks for trying supplements and came back here, Louise!

First of all, your supplements contain Isoflavone? I looked carefully the ingredients because someone asked above, except that, menopause supplements are just multi vitamins and minerals. And Isoflavone works only for women too. Men need other supplements.

Also I have to point out supplements doesn't give you an instant comfort like pain killers unless you are in height of inflammation time.  They prevent inflammations, small or big.

I think if FS is an injury like broken born, breaking bone is inflammation for FS, making shoulder bad. And worst of all FS’s inflammations keep coming back; it’s like breaking bone again and again. A steroid injection gives you only a short comfort is because of that. Anyway while there are inflammations, even small ones, our shoulders don’t have time to recover. But you can’t feel anything if you prevent breaking bones (inflammations), can you? ;p

Even broken bone needs a couple month to recover and rehabilitations. And even prevent inflammations; you have to go through frozen and thawing phases unfortunately. I went through sleepless nights too. But 2 month on, finally pain is easing off. Not completely better yet. My arm is still stack to the shoulder. I keep asking my children to pull my arm as hard as they can to free it! Manipulation without anaesthetic ;p

I totally understand not much sympathy for FS. But I think it better be invisible. My sister has severe eczema all her life. Her skin is like red lizard and she can’t hide all. We know it’s no harm to other people, but strangers avoid her. And doctors made it worse with long term use of steroid creams. Maybe that’s why I respect but can’t trust doctors 100%. FS will cure eventually, so I rather have FS than that.

Anyway whatever treatment you choose, I hope it’ll work for you. And if doctor says it’s OK, please keep taking supplements, might help without you knowing it.

      Take care and Thanks again!

I'm going to get new supplements as you suggest with added ingredient I'll look tomorrow...at the moment sleeplessness is my main priority..caused obviously by the pain, & the worsening restricted movement & frustration of being unable to do things I need to! I've said already my life is on hold in many ways...I have to keep my patience..with this condition..which is proving tough, as I'm very active usually! I do some gentle Aqua excercise

    which help me keep going..!

Hoping you & we all find our way through to recovery & keep postive & pain free wink Louise

Yes, it’s very hard that we can’t sleep well.

If you can, do something taking mind off at night.

When I couldn’t sleep more than a couple hours, I got up in the middle of night, did gentle stretching, lie down on bed with hot packs and watched cooking videos in BBC iplayer with a tablet on bedside table, until I fall asleep again.

It took mind off from pain and I learnt some recipes! There are comedies or entertainments too. What a good thing nowadays technology smile

Also I had a nap every day.  I tried to get enough sleep a day here or there, rather than altogether. We are ill after all and can’t sleep well, so in order to get better, it’s necessity!

I know your frustration too. Now my pain’s easing off, but still movements are bad, I can’t do my job properly, so I had to take time off which I hate sad

But it’s not forever, and when our shoulders’ better, we can do what we want! Like you said patience, patience, patience…

Yesterday I could tie my hair first time since the inflammation. I’m getting there. Hope you will soon!
