My question is is on the treatments for hyperthyroidism. Today I went with my girlfriend to see the doc, and they told her that she had the option for taking the radioactive iodine pill or surgery. She is worried by taking the pill she gets hypothyroidism and then taking meds for the rest of her life. Also the fear of weight gain and loss of hair. But I've done research and both routes it seems she'll become hypo either way. Is this true and what are the side of Levothyroxine? I want to get as much correct information as possible to help her with her choice and hopefully put her mind at ease.

I have hypertension, and even though I plumetted 3 stone in weight, I'm still overweight) so I just can't see how putting on a metric ton of weight going hypo would be the healthiest option for me. I'm a middle aged female and losing weight has always been a battle. I feel like I've been given a leg up in my weight loss and I'm now keeping track of calories in and out to continue it.
I'll be staying on pills while there's breath in my body!

I have Graves and was really really sick about two years ago with a thyroid storm - in hospital for two weeks and lost over three stone (that was the only good thing to come out of it!!) but I was put on block and replace and it worked like a charm - I'm not sure why people dont seem to mention this as an alternative!

To be honest my main concerns for having the above is the weight gain (sounds very sad of me) but I have spent years of weight going up and down I am 33 yrs old and I am finally at my happy weight I do not want to gain again.
I have major fear of getting the operation so I think the Radio is my option I have spoken to someone who has it done and they say it the best thing the even did and have not gained weight and not sure about their hair they have never said about it so i am 90% sure I am going for the RAI and if I do it will be in the next month or two.
I see the comment above has mentioned the block and replace. Am I right in saying you can only do this for a certain period of time. As my Endo has said he does not like you being on the carbimazole for a long period of time???
