TRAMODOL and Paracetmol

I went to the doctors today. She had give patches to put on my back but I saw the physiotherapst who said my pain was deep inside and gave me a tens machine. It works but if I take it off my pain comes back. I fractured the lower vertebrae after a fall. I am on tramodol and asked whether she might prescribe a stronger pain killer. I didn't think she would say yes. I was on Tramodol at first to use when  required then \i went on Tramodol regulary. My GP has now added Paracetamol I think 500mgs 2 tablets 4 times a day as she says this helps the tramodol to work better. I am too on antidepressants but my GP seems quite happy for me to continue on Tramodol. I am not too sure how Tramodol and antidepressants work by both my 2 GPs seem to be happy with this situation. I wonder if anyone has been prescribed Tramodol and then added Paracetamol to make the Tramodol work better. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has had this combination. Tramodol does not help but my GP says with Paracetamol it will act better.

Paracetamol will help the Tramadol work better. Brings out the opiate or something! Hope it helps. It helped me for a while and then my body got used to it and it stopped helping.

Did you not It get some sort of brace or support for your fracture on the spine? What level was it? When was the injury?

      Dear Mark

I didn't get any support only morphine based drugs. The fracture was at my lower vertebrae and it happened about two years ago. I went to the musculoskelatal clinic at my GP surgery and the physiotherapist said the fracture was healed but the patches which the doctor had prescribed only helped surface pain and my pain was coming from deep inside. He said the muscles were tight and inflamed and after a few movements he said there was literally no movement and gave me a tens machine to try and its ok but I can't wear it all day and as soon as it comes off the pain comes back. It was just last week when visiting my doctor again who said paracetamol would help the Tramodol as the Tramadol was really helping. I came from just using it when I needed to be on regular medication and now the Paracetamol.I did ask about a stronger painkiller but the doctor I think did not want to go that road but thank you for your reply mine is quite long so apologise for that. Thank you

Jeanette, Tramadol is only for nerve pain it won't help inflammatory issues, I'm surprised the Physio stopped and didn't help any further they should be helping you get some movement back. Have you tried swimming it can be really helpful to get you moving again and help stretch those muscles. I would get a second opinion from a different Physio try get one that is into sports injuries your condition is only 2 years old that's not very long. I'm not saying the Physio was poor but some are more of a specialist in different areas. Good luck but do try swimming :-)

That's interesting, Mark. I have recently had an abdominal operation, and now have really bad pain in my left thigh/buttock area. I am not sure if its muscle or nerve. If I take some Diclofenac it eases the apin a bit. I would like to try some Tramadol and see if that helps. would I know then if it was nerve or muscle?

It depends, is you thigh/buttock pain related to the surgery. Have you had a diagnosis for the pain ?

I respectably disagree. It really depends how much pain you are in as to whether tramadol will help. I done my back in some time and though it was a soft tissue injury without tramadol I would not have been able to get out of bed. Of course I do agree that an anti inflammatory is also required. And you cannot over state a good diet to help the healing process. I was also given tramadol after a hernia operation.

Thank you Mark I have been on Tramadol for 2 years and was never told it was a nerve pain so that is something I know now. I might try swimming again. It was quite difficult. Unfortunately I am on welfare benefits after having worked for my GP practice for 23 years so I am kept to a tight budget but. I will think about it again.

Yes it works by changing the chemical balance in your brain and nervous system to the pain. Could you get your GP to refer you to a pain clinic in a hospital and maybe you could get a chance to see a different Physio for another opinion. Good luck

No, it was a hysterectomy....but wonder if the surgeon damaged a nerve when removing everything, as the pain has been there since the op. Or was I put into an awkward position for the op? I don't know.

No, haven't been to Doc yet, as was hoping the pain would wear off with exercise.

I wouldn't be sure about the hysterectomy, if it was me with the pain I would go see my GP as he would have had a report sent to them after your op. Then you might have a bit more info about what it could be and deal with it.

      good luck.

My neighbour is on benefits and is bipolar. She got a gym membership through the NHS as it helps with her condition.

      Hi Mark.

Went to the Doc today. He says its to do with muscles in the back. Movements are very stiff there. So am back on Diclofenac, and have to do stretching exercises. Report didn't say what happened in the op, but said they found nothing awful in the labwork....which I am obviously relieved to hear. wink

Hey VG, that's good news, I know I'm always cracking on about swimming but it would really help you as it takes the weight off your body and let's you do more things like stretching, there is another excercise called McKenzie which is wonderful for LBP you could try it, I've added a link to it have a look don't worry about Fig 9 and 10. http://www.mccc.edu/~behrensb/documents/MckenizeMethodARomano.pdf

I've sent a message but it's to be moderated as it has a link to a self treatment you could try called McKenzie excercises. If you don't get to see it let me know and I'll send it in a private message

Thank you Mark...will keep an eye out for it. Hope they let it appear on here.

They put the link up but copy the whole link up to the PDF  because if you hit the link it only shows part and goes to a credit page for some reason. I copied the whole link and pasted it and it will open the PDFs page.
