Massive Butterfly size floaters.

hi folks. wonder if anyone could throw some light on my experience. this evening, i suddenly experienced butterfly size floaters in my peripheral vision. they came & went intermittantly, no other associated symptoms apart from a headache. i phoned 111 & was advised to see a Doc within 2 hrs. the Walk In centre didn't have a Doc so had to go to A & E. they said there was nothing 'worrying' they could see - no pun on words there. i was too embarrased to ask. anybody idea what they might be?

When the vitreous gel liquifys it fall inwards and causes floaters that move around inside the eye freely but if they remain attached to the wall of the eye they remain moving in a resticted area.
If they are attached it can cause flashing due to tugging at the retina.
Apart from the nuisance it is wise to check out any unusuall floaters with headache or flashing as it could indicate possible retina detachment.
Most of us get increasing floaters with age.
There is an operation for severe cases when the gel is removed and the eye refilled but it isn't a common operation and not one they like to do.
