Nine Weeks Post Op ... Foot still swollen

Hi all,

I'm nine weeks post op bunionectomy,realignment and fusion tomorrow, my foot is still puffy and unable to wear normal shoes as it makes my foot swell even more, anyone else still having problems?

    Hi Terri.

    I had my op approx 14 weeks ago and I still have trouble getting into my

     shoes.  I have a pairs of sandals that have velcro straps that I can wear but they are very ugly. If Im going out to dinner I sqeeze into another pair of sandals but I can only wear them for a short time.  I have a friend that had her op over 12 months ago and she still has trouble with her feet swelling so I think its going to be a long haul although some people seem to have quicker recovery times.  I hope you are one of the latter.  Good luck.

      Hi Sandra, 

       I wear a pair of swim shoes which expand with my foot, I did try a pair of pumps on Saturday but that made my foot swell even more.

      I elevate all the time and put a gel eye ask straight from the freezer on my foot!

    Hello Terri, I am one week ahead of you 10 weeks post op today. My foot still swells especially by the end of the day. Thought I turned a corner yesterday with no foot or ankle pain but not so great today.  It does appear to be a long slow process. On a positive note I am back at the gym.am being careful  but progressing nicely each visit.

      Hi Carole Marie,

      I had a bunionectomy last December which didn't work, so feel like I've been off my feet forever!

      I thought this op would be a quicker recovery as I've had no physio but not as yet!

      For some reason the surgeon shaved the top of the bunion and not the side ?! 

      Never really had an explanation why!

      Oh poor you having to go all through it again. Hopefully this time it's been done correctly and you are happy with the outcome.

      Well .....

       With the second op the surgeon said that he "off shot" my toe a bit, which now leaves a gap, the bunion has gone but I've gained a gap ! x

      Was it the same surgeon?

      my bunions gone but my big toe still slightly curves to my next toe. I was hoping the toe would be straighter. Between us we could have had the perfect foot!!😀😀😀😀x

      Haha we could !

       My gap started after my second surgery although my toe is very straight !

       My big toe is feeling alien to me, it's like my other toes can't work out where my big toe has gone 😕

      I started using a toe separator it's suppose to help, train it not to curve, hope this helps, confused

      I went to a physical therapy and met a lady that had surgery with an excelent dr.  She got it on July 21 and in two months she was walking fine with her sandals.  She showed me her foot it was a small cut and  her first toe nice and straight.  I agree that each body is different but the surgeron is a key part for the healing.

      Thanks Mary, I will give it a go. Although I thought having the op would have stopped the need for using anything on my feet😟X

      Hi Marisol, how did your physical therapy go?

      yes your right having a good surgeon is so important. You trust these people to do a good job.xx

      I hope you went to a differenct surgeon the second time!!  I have niece who, when they unwrapped her foot at three weeks, the surgery had failed and the bunion was just as bad if not worse.  She found an orthopedic surgeon who only worked on feet and has had both bunions done and got along great.  If you have to get anything else done, I would certainly go to an orthopedic specialist!

      Hi,

       I had the same surgeon for both ops.

      At my first consultation the surgeon recommended having all three ops done at first, but then changed his mind and said we will see how the bunionectomy goes, the surgeon said I did have bad arthritis in that toe and that may be the reason why the first op wasn't a success.

      My surgeon is at the local hospital and and also only works on feet!
