Horror stories and fast recovery

I can't believe all the horrow stories listed here. So here's my story: I injuried my left achilles on September 3, 2015, saw the doctor on the September 4, 2015 and had a complete tear. Surgery was completed on September 11, 2015 and I was placed in a hard cast. The cast was removed on September 23, 2015 and placed into a air boot. Meet with the PT guy on September 24, 2015 and seeing them once a week. So right after surgery I made sure that my foot was placed higher than my heart for the first four-days to keep the swelling down. When I was placed into the hard cast I would wiggle my toes and still tried at all times to keep my foot higher than my heart once again to keep swelling down. I was walking with about 25% WB in the cast only around my house. By the time I got into the boot I was walking without crutches!!! That was just under three-weeks after surgery. It is now October 7, 2015 getting close to four-weeks after surgery and I am walking around the house without my boot with no pain and I continue to my PT routine DAILY without pain, and BTW my first PT appointment I had 2 degrees dorsiflexion and on the second appointment I had 11 degrees dorsiflexion. I am a 58-year male healthly and work as a Fire Chief. So people tell me I am lucky. I don't think it's luck, I think it's having a positive attitude, keeping you foot evaluated, iced, and working hard on PT. Hoping to walk without the boot next week. That would be 5-weeks!!!

    One thing that is clear, is that its very variable injury; dont' know how fit fire chiefs have to be, but my guess is you're more fitter than me.. overwight BMI, sedentary job, walking and gym but wouldnt say I'm fit.

      58-years old, 175 lbs. 5'10". I would say I'am fit but not that fit. My BMI was 23.

      Obviously you have never fallen foul of the NHS so that is probably why you threw doubt on our experiences.

    Did the Fire Service pay for your private medical care? Did your Insurance cover private health care?

    Perhaps due to your important occupation you were referred to the best surgeon, the bbest physio etc, etc.

    Most of us are at te mercy oof the system.

      The injury happen while I was playing racquetball off duty. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield.  My surgeon was the one on call in Tucson Arizona.

      BS. My experience of the NHS has been faultless. But then, thats the luck of the Uk draw.
