You're right. Acid suppressants only reduce acid not reflux which if travelling full column can breach the upper sphincter as extra-oesophageal reflux (commonly known as LPR) which, aspirating into the respiratory system can be responsibe for the cough etc.

Amitriptiline can reduce the autonimous reaction that increases phlegm production and resultant cough.

    Hi Chris

i can second that. My consultant put me on 10 mg Amitriptyline last Thursday. I'm pretty confident that the endoscopy resulted in my oesophagus going into spasm and A PH test confirmed that I was experiencing pain when reflux was absent (only had silent reflux prior to endoscopy). Anyway, this has probably been my best week in the last 9 months. My chest pain has reduced by about 90-95% and I only feel a slight dull ache now and then. I just hope that the drug is not masking the problem but I do feel a lot better.

    cheers

    Hi.

So pleased you have found something to help.

Just a question do you take amatripaline along with ppi med or do you just use it on its own?

    Thanks

I just take amitryptline by itself. I dont feel like i need ppi anymore.

I stopped my PPIs for about 3 weeks and was no worse off than I would be taking them. Still had chest pains but no better or worse. I told my consultant that I had stopped my PPIs and he wasn't impressed and said that I MUST keep taking the PPIs due to my Barretts. I was hoping to control my symptoms with diet and lifestyle alone.

    cheers

My journey is similiar, except the Elavil stops working, help. After 3-4 years of dealing with my throat clearing etc I was finally correcrtly diagnosed with LSN. I began with 10mg of Elavil once a day and low and behold within 2 days of starting I was like 95% cured. This worked for 8 weeks and then I started to ackslide so incresed the elavil to 10mg twice a day and ended up finally at 50mg twice a day but it stopped working. Then when I came off the Elavil I went through 2 weeks of bad withdraweral.

Now I am back to square 1 and suffering :-(

Hi capforfun, thanks so much for sharing your experience with Elavil and LSN! I'm at a stage where I'm trying to figure out if my throat pain is from LPR or LSN... I'm going to be getting a restech ph study and some other tests but I would love to ask you: how did you get correctly diagnosed with LSN? Could I ask which tests you had (in general for tracking the throat clearing/any pain?) I'd be so grateful for ANY information on this ....Not only to get relief from pain but also to figure out what doctors say/ advise...This is sort of a lifeline for me at this point! Thanks in advance! I hope you feel better soon!

Hi Chris, my daughter is 13 and going thru this same exact. Curious, did you try for 8 years to find something until they presribed this medication?  They have given my daughter this and I am so scared and hesitant to give to her because its a depression pill. Did they feel you might have depression? Thank you Chris for any help on this

Elazabeth. Good evening. Trust me i tried every thing on this planet just to find a releief but every thing fails until my specialist robert jess at ent called me and prescribed me elavil 25 mg. Then taking after 1st day until now i m feeling much better. But keep in mind there could be other problems also that can makes the symptoms worse even it is little bit like allergy or reflux etc. Low allergy or reflux that dont cause problems in normal people cause more problems who have laryngeal sensory neuropathy. Medicines don't stop working like capforfun was discussing. It just something else is also going on at that time like allergy or reflux when it seems medicine is not working. Just take care allergy and reflux and continue taking elavil that will reduce lots of problems.

Hi. I have been dealing with this for years. Back and forth to ENT who told me to drink more water, back to lung specialist, such a rollercoaster. I cough all the time and cant sleep and throat so dry yet feels like full of mucous. I am sure drs think I am crazy. Here in Australia they put everything down to allergy. I am in ppi, nasal spray, allergy tablets. Nothing helps. My lungy wanted me in gabapentin but noy would I after reading all the side effects and I cant afford to gain anymore weight. The steroids I go in for viruses do that. Does elavil make you sleepy during the day. I panic if I am groggy

hi Chris, hoping you are still able to see this message. I was so relieved to come across your post. I have been diagnosed with LPR and just started a tricyclic drug (not the same as you) I noticed a difference instantly too. Do you still take them now, and are they/were they just as effective til then? many thanks
