Could this all be down to Diverticula

Hi all I've recently posted about my regular watery diarrhea which happens between one to three days a week and on those days can be just once or as many as six times a day. I also get some blood in stalls infrequently. I also have upper and lower abdominal and flank pains mostly left but not exclusively.

Well this weekend I had some quite severe left hand back pains so I went to A&E at Barnet Hospital north London . I explained my symptoms and my worries, they decided to do extensive blood tests and an abdominal CT scan, where they found I had a kidney stone stuck in ureter and diverticula in my colon. My question to all of you, is it possible that my watery Diarrhea, rectal bleeding and pains are down to diverticula?

MAYBE-IF THEY FOUND DIVERTICULITIS.. it can certainly cause serious issues... the only other thing it could be (really) is CHRON"S disease..is there blood in the stool or testing positive for blood? They are on the right track though... the Kidney stone wont cause Diarhea...and depending o nthe SIZE may prove troublesome to remove..try and pass it on your own.drink water all day..all yo ucan do .with lemon oil/lemon to try and break up the stone..but if it quite large.you may need a scope to get in and remove it..not fun . All the best.

Hi thanks for reply. There is actually blood in stool but it is not all time maybe once every 8 days on average. I was told by hospital doctor that I have diverticula I don't know if they can actually tell diverticulitis from a CT scan. Im a bit confused as to what is down to what, my GP says that the bleeding may be down to heamorroids , could diverticula cause regular watery diarrhea without bleeding

A ca tscan can absolutelty show Divertitlculi.. Hemmoriad bleeding tends to be BRIGHT RED. If your bnlood is dark or black tarry stools...they you have bleeding in instestinal tract.  What do they want to SDO for the div erticulitis...there isnt much home treatment for that except a very light diet for several weeks and if it doesnt improve...you might need to be admitted for IV fluid therapy and NO food.

They didn't want to do anything for diverticula as I made mistake of telling them I've got a gastroentorologist appointment coming up next week so they have left it for them to worry about.

That figures...make sure to tell the GI to look at yoir ca tscan..the FILMS..not just the report... and tell him you want help--medication--some sort of time line for healing....good luck

Hi Jimbo, sorry to hear about your awful weekend. kidney stones not fun, I've had 5! what are they doing about the kidney stone that is stuck in your ureter? if it's stuck they normally keep you in to see if it moves within a couple of days & if not they"go up" & get it out or blast it - it should be monitored as if it stays stuck, your urine can back up to your kidney. I dont know if diverticula would cause diarrea or bleeding, but certainly it could cause pain-like johnsville said, talk to your consultant next week & tell him to look a ct scan results. also request colonoscopy if he doesnt suggest it to get a direct look at your colon & sehcat test like i mentioned before to test for bile acid malabsorption. remember its definately possible to have more than one condition going on simultaneously & you need treatment for all of them if more than one thing to get symptoms under control, so although it sounds alot of tests to ask for you are only trying to eliminate or confirm conditions that can produce very similar symptoms to one another. keep us posted on here to let us all know how you get on- kidney stone too.

Hi Looloo they have given me tablets to try and desolve the stone. They are also referring me to a specialist for stones to see if it warrants any further action. Appointment at gastroentorologist next week . My intestines Feel tender and often erupt in a lot of gurgling. I've pretty P###ed-off to say the least. Thanks for the reply LooLoo . Jim
