Hi there, I have been diagnosed with HH and peptic ring about 3 years ago, and am on Omnaprozole, but in the interim I have developed phlem in my lungs that never shifts. My resp consultant has doen all tests and my lung function is better than normal but this consistent feeling of having phlem in my lungs does not go away, it softtens after eating but nothing ciome up. I ma at my wits end at this pioint and my resp consultant is sending me back to the gastro consultant as he think it could be acid irritating my lungs..anyone ever have this complaing/connection with hiatus hernia..??

Hi Tom, this is probably no actual help but I similarly have hiatus hernia and similarly get dreadfully phlemy cough that I can't shift so there may be a connection, honestly though, people stare disaprovingly on buses as it's so deep on my chest, but it's not my fault, you know.

thanks Fiona, yeah, its a bit anti social as I get this feeling (voluntarly0 that i need to get this out but never happens. My voice has changed alos since this has happened, they said this could be due to acid on the larynx...have you taken any action to dig deeper as to the cause of the cough,, ? has it coincided with when you developed the HH..? would be interisting to see if there was parallels..

Well the throat specialist said he could find nothing wrong but being a regular cynnic I came away feeling that could well have been a case of they weren't prepared to do anything because of cut backs in the service more generally, welcome to my world!

This is probably a consequence of reflux - which is facilitated by your hiatus hernia.

Reducing acid makes the reflux less damaging but even non-erosive reflux may breach the upper oesophageal sphincter and aspirate into the lungs where irritation will produce excess mucous.

I suffered from reflux all my life. Even 80mg omeprazole a day did nothing to reduce my constant debilitating cough.

Eventually I had a fundoplication operation to reduce the reflux - best thing I ever did.

Go to the www DownWithAcid org uk site and scroll down the contents list (home page) to find the chapter on Extra-oesophageal reflux, under the Reflux main heading, to read more.

thansk for that, yeah sounds fam, iliar, has teh cough disappeared..? was it similar in symptoms to min, never able to cough up anything, but always there in the background, especially prevalent for 30 mins after eating..?

I would cough to th epoint of blacking out at least once a day and sit up every night for a couple of hours between 2:00 and 4:00 coughing and swigging too much cough suppressant.

My reflux reduction surgery changed all that. All symptoms disappeared overnight. I still have a cough but it's nothing like i used to have.

After food is always going to bad as there's matter to reflux.

Another peak may be first thing in the morning from overnight accumulation.

I think this soulnd just like me, in fact in the morning, I can feel quite nauseous and didnt understand why, could be the build up in my lung irritation while lyiong down asleep...

was yours a dry cough or a osfter phlemmy oneĀ and was it voluntary or involuntary...

I'd probably say both. After exerted hacking, I'd manage to bring up quite a bit of phlegm. But also had excess phlegm in throat to be cleared constantly, asthma-like symptoms, nasal problems, sinus, ears, eyes etc. practiacally everything on the symptom survey shown in the Down with Acid book.

ThanksĀ  for that, i will go down the HH route to see if this is a solution, thanks again for the detailed feedback, it gives me solace that someone has had similar symptoms that have been alleviated through HH surgery...onwards and upwards I guess..!! tks again

hi, I know it is years since you posted but I have the same cough How are you now. Also did you feel like the cough was from below sternum or throat. although I get mucus in throat the need to cough is from below sternum. most people say throat so I am worried.
