taking carbimazole before seeing consultant

My GP has prescribed it for me but then said if I was unsure about starting it due to side effects I could wait until I see the consultant (appt early Feb). That has made me unsure! I'm taking propanalol 3 times a day but not sure it helps too much. Been on it 3 weeks now and I still feel my heart racing when I'm not distracted. In the evening I can get really hot and twitchy, finding it hard to get off to sleep as my mind is buzzing. Do most people start carbimazole straight away? Thanks

    Hi Netti, I had exactly the same situation. I did not take Carbimazole as my GP recommended, I waited to see the endo when I had my appointment (about 3 weeks - 1 month after I discussed with my GP) and the endo gave me exactly Carbimazole. Unfortunately she gave me a super high dosage and my body reacted very bad to it so you should be careful to the dosage as well.

    Personally I would suggest to take it but it depends on your blood results and on the dosage that the GP recommended. Do you have your blood results and can you post them here?

    Thanks Andreea. I don't have my results unfortunately. I was a bit shell shocked at the time and didn't ask. I've been prescribed 20mg Carbimazole once a day. Haven't taken any yet...

    Hi Netti,  I was given Carbimazole (40 mgs) by my GP when I first went to see her with symtoms of racing thumping heart beat/pulse, breathlessness, racing thoughts, anxiety (just a few) and I was happy to take it because she said it would relieve these symptoms until I saw the specialist some weeks later.  Carbimazole takes a week or two to "kick in" and I did feel relief from those symptoms after that time.

    I would take it if I was you, you can always stop should you feel you are having some side effects from it, I didn't (and I'm still taking it over years on).

    Hi,   I would suggest you talk to the GP about this.  I am taking Deralin to slow down my heart rate.  I started 3 a day, 2 after first week  ,1 (split the tablet to half for morning and night) now.  My GP told me I will need to continue with Deralin with the Carbimzole together.  It works really well for me.   It brings my heart rate from over 100 to 70-80.   I suggest you also ask for a ECG on your heart to check the rhythm.   If the heart beat rhythem is irregular, you may check with GP to prevent stroke till you body settle with Garbimazole.

    Well I still haven't started the carbimazole! I got plenty of rest over Christmas and have been feeling better - still not back to normal though. My appointment with the endo is in 2 weeks and I had a blood test last week. Today I rang for the results to be told my doctor has written "referred to consultant" on my TSH T4 & T3 tests - no numbers available. If I want numbers I was advised to make a GP appointment to discuss. Seems a waste of her time. My ferritin was within range/normal (again no number available). I was at Haematology on Monday and she said I should keep taking iron as my most recent results showed an improvement from 69 to 87 to 96? She wants it up to 110. Do these numbers make sense?
