Not too sure about having botox

Hi I have already asked this question but am new to the forum so was not sure if it would be answered unless I started a new discussion.  I am having migraines and really bad auras on a daily basis since July and am currently not working due to these.  It has really put my life on hold as I am unable really do anything as it triggers my syptoms.  I am due to have botox in a couple of weeks time but having read the discussion on this site  I am not sure about having it.  I am taking the highest dosage of medication I can take as prescribed by my consultant which is not working and over the last two weeks my symptoms seem to be getting worse so botox may be my only choice.  However I already have chronic joint pain so having read about joint problems that some people have been experiencing after botox I am not sure I want to make matters worse.  Has anyone else with chronic joint pain conditions had botox and has it made their joint pain worse?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Claire, I've had chronic daily migraine with a chronic pain syndrome for 3 years now, I've had 5 lots of Botox. It's not expected to work the 1st time so you will need a 2nd dose. the last 2 courses have given me about 3 weeks relief. It hasn't made my pain syndrome any worse or any better. I lost my job of 23 years due to how disabling these conditions are. I am under a neurologist that specialises in migraines and have nearly tried all the medications. None of them have worked. Good luck with your treatment I hope you have much better luck than me.

    Hi Claire,

For me it was well worth having the Botox, I hardly have any migraines now.

It doesnt work for everybody, but all you can do it gove it a go and see what happens.  What do you have to lose?

I have not heard of joint problems with Botox. So my advice would be go for it definitely.

Btw what meds are you taking, just interested.

      HiAlison and  Personal20

Thank for replying.  The meds I am taking at the moment are 800mg sodium valproate and then Naratriptan which I can take if and when needed alongside paracetomal and anti sickness tablets again, if and when needed.

I am trying not to get my hopes up too much, but my life is really on hold, even trying to focus on typing this just aggrivates the auras and then triggers the headaches.  I have been trying to make little trips out like going to the local cafe with my mum but after half hour I can no longer do with the noise/lights and thats all the triggers I need.  Do either of you 2 know what set your migraines off or have you always suffered from them?

Alison I am so sorry to hear that you are still unwell,  My other conditions caused me to reduce my working week to 2 and a half days so do not want these migraines to further restrict my life.

      Take care  Claire

Hi Claire, everyone's different and tolerate meds differently. Give the Botox ago it might help you. In response to what aggravates it the answer is everything. Sneezing bending down any movement. I don't get aura's never had. It came on very quickly and has never really left me. I also have a chiari type malformation which is a herniated cerebellum which was discovered last year. The neuro doesn't think it's causing my problems however I have all they symptoms of it. It's very hard isn't it. Keep positive and try not to isolate yourself. take care

      Thanks Alison

It is hard.  Even trying to do normal things like going to the local shops/cafe triggers migraines/auras.  We plod on though!

Take care too and I will report when botox has been done - at least I won't have any wrinkles!!!!!

Haha someone said to me yesterday about looking young. I said yes that would be the 31 Botox injections I have to indure every 3 months for migraines :-@ apparently there's nowhere near the amount of Botox injected to stop wrinkles and the majority of them are in the hairline, behind the ears, back of neck and a couple in the shoulders. Grit your teeth and don't fret as if your tense it's worse. Let me know how you get on. Good luck
