Back in 2011 I visited Greece (kavos) which is known as a party island so not the cleanest of places. I was completely healthy before the holiday and rearly fell ill. During the holiday I had an upset stomach but nothing to server that I was worried about. A few weeks after returning to the UK I became really unwell, suffering with constant diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fatigue. After almost one year of these symptoms I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease. I then followed a strict gluten free diet and was still feeling unwell with systems of fatigue about a year and a half after the diagnoses I was diagnosed with am underactive thyroid and was put on thyroxine. More recently I have also been diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease. I still suffer with bouts of diarrhoea, always suffering with abdominal pain and have yellow or white 'bits' in my stools. I have seen my gp loads of times about it and he says he can't do stool tests unless I have serve diarrhoea. I have researched so much because this has been going on for years and all my diagnoses are linked with a paracite investation. I was just wondering what else I can do to get medical help as I suffering everyday.

    I do not understand why your doctor refuses to do a stool test. What does he mean he cannot do one unless you have severe diarrhea? I have had several of them done and did not have diarrhea.

      Thank you for your reply. I have requested to do a stool sample a few times and he has always told me unless I have server diarrhoea they can not test stool samples as it will be hard for the lab to detect. I have changed GP's twice and anytime I mention I want to be tested for parasites they just brush it under the mat.

      Tell the doctor you want a referral to a gastro enterologist. Absolutely insist on the stool test. I had no idea I had Hpylori until they did it. It caused a huge amount of sickness in me and they found it without me having diarrhea.

    I can't believe they haven't given you a stool test!! Sounds like giardia to me. You can pay for a stool test that checks bacteria and parasites through a company called medichecks. You should also bite the bullet and pay for the 'giardia antigen' test through them as well as it is hard to find giardia in the stool much more acurate to test the antigen.

    I have had my own mystery illness for past 9 months after a trip to Cuba so have paid for these tests myself and my GP tested for coeliac etc too. Mine turned out to be leptospirosis even though my symptoms were unusual for it. Recurring diarrhoea was not my main symptom but certainly one issue. I was finally diagnosed only last week via a blood test ordered by an infectious disease consultant. My advise would be to make a GP appointment and refuse to leave without a referral to an Infectious disease specialist. Tell him with your travel history you feel this is the specialist best equipped to diagnose you.

    But if you can afford to definitely get the private stool test through medicheck anyway (about £75 I think). That way you will have a diagnosis much quicker if it comes back positive and your GP will treat you off those results.
