Pain at night

I had bunion surgery 17 days ago. All went well. 12 days after surgery, dr put me in a boot and said i can walk on my heel. All good. At night, when i am in bed, i have been getting excruciating pain in my

Foot like nerve endings on fire. Pain pills don't seem to be effective. I haven't had pain like this since surgery. In fact, after surgery, i had some throbbing pain but nothing like what i am experiencing now and only at night when i am in bed. Has anyone experienced this?

    Hello Mac

I had a McBride bunion surgery on Feb 25 - so 11 days ago.  It is a less evasive surgery than some of the others - no pins or screws.  Just a soft tissue release and shaving of the bunion.

I also have had problems at night with pain that felt burning as you described.  During the day, it is not as bad.  I was trying to avoid taking any pills - because I just don't like the effects sometimes.  However, I have learned the last couple nights that if I take one of the pills the doctor prescribed (Naproxen 375 mg), it helps.  It is supposed to reduce inflamation. It seems to make sense that the burning feeling may be coming from inflamation.  What kind of bunion surgery did you have and what drugs are you taking?

I stiil have bad nerve problems in my first foot having surgery back in July. My second was in December and no nerve problems at all. Same surgery in both. Go figure!?!?! I'm told it can take up to a year for the nerve pain to go away. I knew the consequences before surgery from reading this forum prior to deciding on surgery. My bunions were severe and my feet hurt regularly pre surgery, so I was/am willing deal with the aftermath.... plus I have normal looking feet now!! 👌 Yea!!

    I wish you a speedy recovery!! 😀

Hi I also experience the same thing. Also had surgery 17 days ago it was the 22 Feb 2016. I nearly put my feet in cold water. My doc SYS its normal but how can such a pain be normal?I just thank God I decided to do both feet at the same time, otherwise I was not going back for that op again. Just hang in there we will be fine

Thanks for your response. I cannot imagine having two done at the same time. Wow.

The pain is starting to subside at night.

Are you walking with the boots yet?

Hi. I tried walking in those boots but it was very uncomfortable and I stopped wearing them. I walk on my heels but its hard, can't wait for Wednesday to take out the cast and see what happens next. I dont wait for pains before I take pain blocks , I now take them every 4 hours

Fyi.... If you had the metatarsol bone cut into and now have a plate and screws, you might check with your doctor about walking without your boot. I did the same and my doctor was upset about it.. .... and I had a set back due to not using the boot.😧

Hi Mac, I am 9 weeks post op.  I too experiencedthe nerve pain which felt like a tattoo gun.  The pain came on week 2 and persisted until about week 6 and mainly happened when my heel was flat on the bed.  Painkillers did not touch it but freezing my socked foot with an ice pack helped a little.  Now at 9 weeks I only get this pain if my foot is down 4 or 5 hours.

Good that pain is getting better. Have you been given an expected recovery rate?

Hi Mac, guess you will find out more in 3 weeks then. I was given a sick note for 8 weeks and doc did not expect to see me again. Seems no one can give an expected recovery rate

Hi I am 3 weeks post bunion surgery on both feet. One foot is fine but the other is quite painful around the front surface of the big toe. I assume it's nerve pain as there is no inflammation. Hope it will settle soon! Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks
