right hemicolectomy

I had surgery almost 7 mths ago, when the Dr's took out a foot of my large & small intestine. Since then I stay bloated, excess gas, which I can't seem to control when it is passed. Which can be very embarrassing.

I can't seem to eat alot of different foods. When I do eat, I have cramps and the food goes through me within 15-20 minutes. When passed its either loose stool or with alot of gas. Sometimes it seems that I can't control the bowl and have had accidents to where I would have to change clothes or get up in the middle of the night to wash sheets.

I have also lost alot of weight... From 165 to 128 & still loosing... My potassium is staying low to, so therefore I stay tired....... Can you please share your stories....

I feel like this is controlling my life..... Help.. Is this normal? What can I do???

I would greatly appreciate your time.

    Hi Carolyn

I had an emergency op two weeks ago a hole in my colon, pus,

sepsis. I may have elective surgery to remove diseased section in the near future.

I'm currently eating small but often amounts and it does go thru

my system quickly and weird shade green/black.

I would urge you to talk to your gp or the actual specialist.

Keep a food diary and maybe certain foods are not good for you.

my stitches and I wish you well

      Hi Saxonjus

If you dont mind me asking, what caused the hole in your intestine? I wish the Drs would have removed your diseased section of your colon during your emergency surgery...

    Hi Carolyn

I had a diverticular that became infected and then ruptured! This caused the hole. I thought I'd got a tummy/groin infection due to a week of pain, high temperature.

I even struggled walking the dog over field try take my mind off

pain after first visit to Dr said take laxatives!

My surgeon went for the less evasive procedure to save a stoma.

Now if they remove damaged section can be keyhole and no stoma I hope.

I am scared a little as it could flare up again.

I definitely hope that you do not have any flare up's. Did the Dr tell you how much of your colon is affected by the diverticular?

Hi Carolyn, Can you tell me more about your original condition that led to your surgery? Is your hospital or GP monitoring your diet and recovery? Have you been given info about your potassium and how to improve it? They can't let you carry on losing weight without helping you such as giving you nutritional additives. My son was given a drink to improve his potassium levels as they were low due to UC, he was also expected to eat several bananas a day.

Have they talked to you about thickening additives to add to your food to thicken the output to help you control? Have they referred you to a nutritionist to improve your weight?

Hope you can get the help you need.

    Regards, Sheila.

      Hi Shelia..

Can you give me the name of the drink for the potassium? I would greatly appreciate it.... I'm scared to eat banana's due to the gas and bloating...and he way foods go straight through me dont know if it would help.

When the Drs did a colonoscopy they found a Hugh mass in my colon and was afraid that it would turn to cancer.

My dilemma now is that I wanted a second opinion the first Dr. Would not see me after that. The Second Dr that I got the second opinion from actually did the surgery and removed a foot of my large intestine... He accidently punctured a hole in the small intestine and had to remove a foot of it.....

When I went back last week I was asking what should I be experiencing now after 6 months..... He told me that I should be able to eat any thing.... I've ask to see a nutrition and he wpnt refer me.... I feel like I am in this by myself because the Dr won't explain anything...

Hi Carolyn, You are having a hard time of it, I'm so sorry. The drink was in hospital and was a prescription from the nutritionist, so no idea what sorry, prob a concoction of minerals as son said it tasted like sea water.

The GP is the best one to refer you on so ask to see a nutritionist. They must have tested the growth they took out so what did they say?

It is completly out of order that they nicked a piece of intestine, why was it not repaired rather than removed?

I am asking so many questions but all of these things are such a steep learning curve as we found in my son's 2 year battle with UC and afterwards. Some of his problems were caused by poor care in hospital so from our experience you need to do your own research and educate yourself. I would say to get a referral to a specialist hosp, we went there from a general hosp who were out of their depth. We went to John Radcliffe hosp Oxford and the GI dept was brill, life changing. Also good are St Marks London.

      Good luck, Sheila.

      Hi Shelia,

Thank you so much for responding back. I will talk to my family physician.

The mass, thank goodness was not cancer.... But they stated that it was a matter of time before it would be........

You really raised a good question.... Why did the Dr not repair the small intestine instead of removing a foot of it also...... I will be asking my family Dr to get all my medics records..... So I can review them myself.......

Its sad that your son didnt get the proper care until he went to another hospital..... How is he doing now? Better I hope !!!

      Hi Carolyn.

My son is doing well now having had several major surgeries, completely life changing and life threatening, long story but I am grateful to say that he got treatment from the experts in the end. He has come through some difficult times like you have, he had his colon removed as he perforated in 2 places and had a stoma for 18 months. He had a full reversal last year and so has an internal pouch and uses the toilet in the normal way, what a relief. He is an example of someone who has had major GI problems and yet can eat and drink what he likes and is in control and normal output. the only thing he needs to do is drink more than others as otherwise prone to dehydration. I tell you this as although he has had all his colon, large intestine, removed he does lead a normal life, no pain, no bloating. The wonderful team at JR Oxford reconstructed him during 2 surgeries.

The process for getting your medical records is to contact the hosp via their PALS office and ask for all your records, written and computer held, including any meeting notes, and you pay a small charge for photo copying. You can arrange a meeting for anything you need explained. We did this as his local hosp did not take good enough care and his bowel perforated at night and he nearly died. We complained and had his complaint reviewed so that they apologised.

I hope you can get your problems sorted soon, it is every patients right to get a referral to see a Consultant in a hosp for a medical problem using NHS choices via your GP.

      I wish you well.

      Sheila.
