Two dermoid ovarian cysts - will they be removed?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi ladies (and any interested males)

I was diagnosed 3 days ago with a 9.1cm dermoid cyst on the right ovary and a 2.4cm dermoid cyst on the left too.  I've been referred to a gyne as 'non urgent' which is a relief, but I've been experiencing severe pain as well as heavy periods and other symptoms.  While I wait for my appt to come I've been worrying about the probability of open surgery vs keyhole, Also whether the surgeon will remove the smaller left cyst while they're already in there, or leave it to see if it gets bigger.  I'm at the mercy of the NHS btw.

Any offers of experience greatly appreciated....!  Thanks

Hi reading this I'm shocked as you said your in pain this should be urgent and yes they should be removing them please read my page. Not to scare you but for info ... Wombles small cell ovarian cancer fight and awareness. On Facebook ... I was told I had a dermoid cyst then that it wouldn't hurt. Mine did hurt but turned out not to be one good luck xx

Hi. I've just had a cyst, 6 cms x 7 cms plus ovaries and tubes, (salpingo oophrectomy) removed. The cyst was classed as para ovarian as it was just to the side of the right ovary. I asked for the ovaries to be removed as I'm 72 and Mother had ovarian cancer. It was all done by keyhole but I had to sign for laparotomy too in case a larger cut was needed. This was Thursday am and I came home Friday pm. What they do is dependant on type of cyst and your age. They cannot always tell which type you have until it's removed. Apart from feeling windy, due to the gas they pump in to see what they're doing, and a bit sore round the abdomen I'm fine really. Everything's functioning normally in the toilet depts. I feel tired quickly but rest when I need to. They said it will be about a month before I can get back to normal if all heals ok as opposed to much longer if you have a laparotomy I understand. If the other cyst needs removing they will do so and you can ask them to as I asked for the ovaries to be removed. Not much point in keeping them at my age! rolleyes The doctor who came to visit me after showed me the photographs of cyst etc, taken during the op, very interesting as I like to know what's happening, less worry for me then! The NHS here, E Midlands, are really good in my opinion and all staff were very helpful and caring. I have to go in again soon for a prolapse op but quite happy to so now I've met all the team. Hope this helps and don't be afraid to ask them any questions you need to. Best wishes, Pollyanna UK biggrin

Thank you Pollyanna, the positivity I need right now!  I feel that I would ask them to take both cysts out in the one visit, if it's in my power to make the choice.  I just hope that my ovaries (or at least one) can be saved - I'm 39 and planning no more children but nor do I relish the idea of the menopause at this age.  Feeling terribly impatient and suddenly conscious of every twinge and squeeze on my abdomen, I want to know my treatment and have it done tomorrow!

      Hi Pollyanna

I'm 58 and found out when I was 57 that I have a 6cm simple cyst not cancerous on my right ovary, I have not had any pain they stumbled over it in an ultrasound last year when I was sick with nausea and lightheaded but said not the fault of the cyst. So diagnosis of my illness I have since had an endoscopy and all is good for my digestive system. When I was referred for my cyst the obgyn said I have a grade 2 posterior vagina prolaspe.i also had the tumor marker blood tests and a hormonal panel test all good .

What I would like to ask you is do you know how your cyst developed post menopause and did anyone tell you that you can dissolve them naturally... meaning why did you opt for surgical.

So far I've had 3 ultrasounds at 3 month interverals. My dr said it was up to me if I want to keep monitoring it or have it removed ?

I would rather do things naturally then surgery that is more invasive .

Please tell me anything that might sway me in deciding what to do.

      Thx

      Robin

Just to add, I had severe pains come on suddenly, around 3wk ago, like I hadn't felt since childbirth. I was seen at an urgent care clinic and this has all unfolded since.  It's manageable for now, odd shooting pains in my hips and other less painful symptoms, and I always carry painkillers. I'm 'non urgent' because the risk of malignant cells seems low and I'm managing the pain.

Hi there, i have also been diagnosed with bilateral cyst but they hv not disgnosed it as a dermoid yet..the ct scan results just states it as ovarian teratoma and possible hydrasalpinx. I wonder how you got the diagnosis for dermoid? Im also in the process of deciding whether to hv a laparoscopy or a laparatomy nd getting 2nd and 3rd opinions as i realized that it depends on the drs experience and specialisation. Some drs maybe specialised in laparoscopy and would advise you that it can be done but it really depends on the complexity of the cyst like recently i found that one of my cysts is actually hiding behind my uterus so it may be more complex than it seems. I dont hv pain at all and found these by accident. But since you are in pain, they should see to it that there is no possible rupture going on or torsion against your fallopian tubes that may be causing the pain. Take care

Hi, as far as i am aware, they will not remove a cyst unless it is bigger that 5cm. However, i would have thought that they would remove both of your cysts during the surgery as they would have to remove the cyst on your left ovary anyway when it gets bigger! I am not sure whether they will do your surgery via keyhole or not.  When i was 14 a 13x12x9cm cyst was found on my left ovary and they removed this completely via keyhole. My consultant said that it would have been much easier for him to remove the cyst using open surgery, but he said that it would have been unfair to leave me with such a large scar when i was only 14.

During the surgery, they also found a small dermoid cyst on my right ovary. They didn't remove it; as the large cyst had completey killed my left ovary, meaning that i only had one left. So instead of cutting off part of my ovary, they drained the smaller cyst leaving my ovary healthy! My consultant was concerned about my fertility, whuch was why he didn't remove the smaller cyst. You mentioned that you weren't planning anymore children, so i would think that they would remove both of our cysts!

    I hope this helps! X
