I used to get all those symptoms and more.

Chest pains from reflux can mimic heart pains so I had all the heart tests too.

The lump in the throat is probably globus.

And there are a host more symptoms you may not have even considered were related. (See attached graphic)

Thinks like Apple Cider Vinegar are really nothing much more than ameliorants which may help soothe some symptoms but not cure the cause.

To reduce reflux, which is a mechanical action, putting more things into your body isn't a solution. You need to work to prevent the action.

See the section on reflux in the www DownWithAcid org uk book.

      Hi Barretts

U seem pretty well clued up on all things GERD . I recently read the latest research published in American Journal of nephrology (this month)  shows that prolonged use of PPIs increases chronic kidney failure by 36%.(the percentage increases until 2 yrs of use then plateaus out) The H2 meds however do not effect kidneys at all.

What do u make of all this?

I did not actually read the journal.. just a newspaprer article on the research published

The media always like a good scare story and will often misreport the facts. The report didn't actually say PPIs increased kidney disease but were associated with an increase - which is entirely different.

The report also said, "Whether exposure to PPI associates with incident CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease], CKD progression, or ESRD [End Stage Renal Disease] is not known."

It is the problem with confusing correlation and causation which the attached graphic illustrates.

It seems fashionable to knock these drugs which are amongst the safest drugs, have been around for 30 years and used by millions worldwide. Of course misrepresentation in the media fuels those "natural" health sites (which often just want to sell you teir products which are untested, usually ineffective and sometimes dangerous) and now some US law firms are thinking they may make money from this if any patients want to try and sue the drugs companies. (They would not win, however, as there's no proof.)

To help counteract these stories, I have published a response page on the www BarrettsWessex org uk website which may be found using the left navigation pane, as a subpage to Drugs below the Treatment tab, or by using the site's search facility for "PPI dangers".

      Thanks, will check it out

..and as u say the media has run a proper scare story by misleading information.

With all respect to everyone on this forum when you read the label it clearly states no more than 2 weeks unless authorized by a physician.  But then all these so called medical professionals give you PPI's for months with no evidence you actually need it.  My sister saw her GI the other day and he gave her Omeprazole just because she has a little heartburn.  The same happened to me 2 12 years ago when I told the Doc I was having heartburn twice monthly, he put me on Omeprazole for a few months. (Yes, twice monthly instead of telling me to eat better) So maybe the problem is not the medication, is the Doctors giving them like candies just because you ate a pizza and got a little heartburn from it. Sure, when their is a warning on these medications to not take for more than 2 weeks it makes you think their is something wrong for long term unless the benefits actually outweighs the side effects which is clearly not the case without medical evidence.

If you get a Doctor that tells you to try eating better and even hands you a list of foods to reduce acids instead of giving you this drug  then this is the Doctor I will love to see.  This applies to all medical specialists but specially the GI's and Primaries.

I have chest pressure, heavy breathing and when I eat I can't breath. Chest pressure is all day, every day but is worsen by standing, walking, talking and specially by eating. I also have Health Anxiety.  I have taken all the medications in the book and nothing helped. After my last GI said he could do nothing else for me and saw a new GI today and when I told him my symptoms he asked me if I had done an Esophageal Monometry test which I have not, so he said that is the first test they would have done with all the sysmtoms I have and nerves issues.  Funny, the last GI said I had high acid, and this one said based on the records I had on hand with all the test results I do have mild reflux on the esophagus but as for the stomach all they can see is mild gastritis.  When I asked him about the reflux on the esophagus he said that could be from HIGH or LOW acid on the stomach.  WOW, something I repeated to my old GI many times but she never knowledeged this.   They will be doing the test in 2 weeks so hopefully I will get some answers.  Will keep you updated. ;-)
