Food sticking

Posted , 6 users are following.

I struggle with food sticking midway in my oesophagus. It is not everymeal but can once or twice per week and its always in the same place. Any acid reflux also attacks the same place. I have recently also experienced issues with liquids where i seem to have to burp to get it flowing. I do have an appointment for an endoscopy next week. Anybody experiencing similar things and if so what was your diagnosis.

Barium Swallow is the 2nd option, an Endoscopy is beter and will cover more.  Sure, BS is much safer and easier.  Do you have problem swalowing?

Thanks for the reply. I can swallow food ok but it will get stuck in the middle of my chest. End up gasping for air until it moves. Sometimes hot drinks scald the same place which will lead to pain for a week. Like I said endoscopy on Tuesday so I should get an answer........ just dont want the dredded C word!

Dont worry too much - that was me food sticking and still does - dont eat out now anymore because of this - hot drinks etc - same - I dont have cancer - I have reflux (endoscopy 2 months ago) also have a HH - on meds and altered my diet - but still every now and then food will get stuck right where you say - but not cancer.

You need to see Doctor for tests. Its not good for food to get stuck.

My food did not stick very often but for my reflux I had two types swallowing tests and one barium xray tests and endoscopy. I am in the UK. I am going to have Stretta treatment.

Very Interesting, thanks! Will ask my GI about this after a Manometry test on the 4th. Sounds like something they should always try before a surgery.   ;-)

Did you mean the stretta treatment should be tried before surgery treatment. Stretta is instead of surgery. I chose Stretta. The surgeon here in uk trained to do Stretta, in US and I think France. It should be succesful. He said medicaly healthwise and my good low weight , that I was suitable candidate

If you meant all the tests, yes all tests should be done if needed before treatment.

      STRETTA is Radio Frequency Treatment.

Yes, stretta is for sure a better option before surgery.  Test will always come first in order to come to the concluton you need Stretta or surgery.   I have done all the test except for the monometry which I'm scheduled in 7 days. I believe my GI mention that option before surgery so looks like I'm in the right path.   Honestly, I feel like a little kid waiting for his candy, can't wait to be half normal again. ;-)

I have been having trouble for a while. I would choke maybe twice a year for the past 10 years. Lately, I started choking. Food felt like it was stuck in my chest. It wouldn't go up or down. I couldn't breathe. Very scary! Last month I had a barium swallow and they said that I had a lot of reflux. Later, I had an endoscopy and the doctor dilated my esophagus. Just today, I ate some yogurt with granola and it got stuck. Very scary!! I couldn't even swallow water. I could throw up a bit but no relief. It took about 2 hours for me to feel like it went down. I feel like I have a ball in between my ribs. It's terrible. I still feel it 8 hours later. What should I do now??

WOW, that is pretty scary. ;-(  MY barium Swallow only showed mild reflux, and the PH BRAVO mild inactive gastritis but I have chest heaviness/pressure and short of air all day long except when I sleep.  When I eat is the worse and can't breath, but I do not feel like is stock.  My new GI thinks is the esophagus muscle contracting and that is why I'm having the test on the 4th. He did say that surgery was an option but before surgery he mention a threatment which I believe is the stretta treatment.  I do have a Hospital only 15 minutes from my home where they do this procedure.  Does insurance covers this all is all out of pocket money?  If so, how much?

It all sounds very scary pamela, Yogurt sits in the stomach and takes a long time to digest. I would think it is possible that yogurt could stick in the oesophagus. Yohurt is something I have to be careful with even though my condition is not the same as yours. See your Doctor to let them know what is happening.

You and pamela seem to have a completley different condition to myself.

You are both having symptoms that I did not have. Except, I cant eat a normal sized meal as is sits from my stomach and all the way up my oesophagus. Terrible discomfort. I have had to change my eating habits. Smaller meal. Cutting out many foods.

      Summary:

I have suffered with acid stomach, coughing, wheezing and irritation in my airway.

My Reflux has now been diagnosed and small hernia after tests, including endoscopy. The opening to my stomach does not close properly. This causes the acid to escape. It also causes the gas vapour from the acid to affect my esophagus and throat as I breath.

Had to cut out many foods in order, to not produce too much acid. Foods like tomatoes and tomato sauce etc. Fatty foods such as meats and spicy foods. No cream cakes, biscuits, pastries. Foods made with batter. Sugary foods too, cause excessive acid. No ginger or vinegar, no lemon.White bread and processed foods can cause sypmtoms.

      Hope this helps.

Changeing my diet lessened the symptoms which makes my daily life a little more comfortable. This also prooved that I needed tests and treatment.

Forgot to say chocolate is not good either. Its been really hard cutting out my well loved foods.

We can all have different conditions and symptoms but the treatment can be the same. If your valve is not working properly which is probably what I have without the hernia then the best treatment can be the stretta or the surgery to narrow the exit to the esophagus.  I have mild reflux on mines and based on the PH Bravo it does not appear to be from high acid so PPI or H2 Blockers to nothing for me but make it worse.  If the test I'm going to have this Wednesday shows that my valve is not working properly I guess my best option is the strettas, if is the esophagus muscles contracting then the GI will have options for me but it won't be PPI's or H2 Blockers .

Yes the valve opening to my stomach does not close. My endoscopy shows that the acid is burning my esophagus. He even includes photo for me to look at, on his correspondence to me. My condition could lead to cancer, so looking forward to this treatment being succesful. He said my hernia is small so will not have to operate on that. After recovery I should in time, be able to eat most of the foods that I have had to avoid. My throat and airway should also recover along with the cough,

      vocal chord and wheezing.

      Hi.

I seem to have the same problem and do find that the list of products you mentioned affects my acid build up too.

We just have yo watch what we eat.

Hi halyna, and sorting out a diet is not easy. Going out or invited to meals is difficult as I have to say no to most foods. Or someone say's would you like a biscuit with that cup of tea ? only for me to say no and find I have to go into a long explanation of why. so socialising is tough too.

I understand what you mean. I myself get fed up at times watching everything I eat.

But hopefully you get your issue sorted.

      Good luck.

Ginger, vinegar and lemon kill me too.  Tomatoes ok with - weird or what.
