20 years ago, I was told I had a fibroid the size of a quarter and needed a hysterectomy. I was very sad, confused and scared and I began to learn a lot about fibroids. I ended up having a myomectomy to remove the fibroid which was pressing on my bladder. At that time, I was in in my 30's and in perfect shape; 5'2" and 110 pounds. I was told that I would recover in 2 -4 weeks. It took me a full year to regain my core strength. In my late 40's the fibroids came back. I have many inside and outside the uterus. I have heavy bleeding and battle anemia too. But I am not having any more surgery. I am 55 years old and weigh the same as I did in my 30's through sheer commitment to excercise and a low glycemic diet. I don't know your age but for me, I don't have the strength to go through a major surgery again. There are a lot worse things in life than having a few benign fibroids and many risks that go along with a hysterectomy. Here in the US, 600K are performed a year. There are side effects with every drug on the market. Take control of your own health; read and become your own advocate. If you are a young woman, consider reading about myomectomy which removes the fibroids and leaves the uterus intact. Just know that you don't have a disease, you are not sick. Fibroids ares smooth muscle and extremely common.

Sorry to hear your situation. Large fibroids can be removed by having an Open Myomectomy surgery with an experienced skilled surgeon. Do not have a hysterectomy if you do not want to. Surgeons who are not very skilled tend to push patients towards hysteroctomy as they consider it a simpler solution. Professor Mayonda is the best specialist in the UK for removal of large fibroids, you can get a seccond opinion from him by having a consultation and depending on where you live in UK you can be referred to him. He did my surgery in January removing 32 fibroids of varying sizes and my recovery went exceptionally well. He does not advice taking tablets for shrinkage as they can shrink the smaller fibroids so that they are not visible and then they reappear after surgery. Some consultants are not skilled in removing large fibroids and so they recommend hysterectomy instead. What they should do is be honest put their pride aside and refer patients to consultants such as Professor Mayonda who specialise in that field. Do you research online. In the meantime for the heavy flow ask you Doctor if they can prescribe Transexamic Acid tablets, they help with reducing the blood flow and incidentally they are used during surgery to reduce blood loss. I was on them for years and they do work if you take them for the first 3 days of the menstural flow. Transexamic Acid Tablets however do not shrink fibroids. All the very best. Do your research online.
