Hi Assy,   I understand your worry, I have been there when first found out about fibroids. I did not have an operation.    1 option - Can you take esyma tablets to try to help shrink them, at least initially and to see how that works and review it. You can ask for this if they dont tell you.  And 2.  Are any of the fibroids you have submucosal, (inside the uterus). Those types can be removed via hysteroscopy and keeping the uterus in tact.   It may even be that firstly take the esyma tablets to try to reduce the size and then have hysteroscopy.  Good luck to you with this.  Do you know the size of the 4 of them?

Hi Assy, quite often Drs will go straight for hysterectomy (removing uterus) as for them it solves the problems,  but please dont rush into that. I would ask if the submucosal ones can be removed by hysteroscopy, and if you take Eysma straight away to help reduce them prior to this. If they say the submucosal are too large, then you could say that the esmya tablets could reduce them first to make them small enough for this to be possible.   The course of Esmya is 3 months at a time.    It would be useful to know the sizes of the submucosal if they are under 4cm however, either way the eysma tablets could help to shrink them.   Yes after a while they may come back but you can take the tablets intermittently and if the submucosals get small enough - they can be removed by the hysteroscopy - this is fibroid resection. I had a general anaesthetic myself when having this.     Good luck & best wishes.   Any questions just raise them here as many of us have had experiences.

    Hi Assy,

20 years ago, I was told I had a fibroid the size of a quarter and needed a hysterectomy. I was very sad, confused and scared and I began to learn a lot about fibroids. I ended up having a myomectomy to remove the fibroid which was pressing on my bladder. At that time, I was in in my 30's and in perfect shape; 5'2" and 110 pounds. I was told that I would recover in 2 -4 weeks. It took me a full year to regain my core strength. In my late 40's the fibroids came back. I have many inside and outside the uterus. I have heavy bleeding and battle anemia too. But I am not having any more surgery. I am 55 years old and weigh the same as I did in my 30's through sheer commitment to excercise and a low glycemic diet. I don't know your age but for me, I don't have the strength to go through a major surgery again. There are a lot worse things in life than having a few benign fibroids and many risks that go along with a hysterectomy. Here in the US, 600K are performed a year. There are side effects with every drug on the market. Take control of your own health; read and become your own advocate. If you are a young woman, consider reading about myomectomy which removes the fibroids and leaves the uterus intact. Just know that you don't have a disease, you are not sick. Fibroids ares smooth muscle and extremely common.

Hi Assy, is that Guillian Barr Syndrome? Glad that you are recovering. What I have learned is that only a very small percentage of fibroids cause heavy flow. At your age it could very well be peri menopause symptoms; an imbalance between Estrogen and Progesterone.  I am taking Prometrium or Bio Identical Progesterone which has greatly ameliorated my blood loss and pernicious anemia. Bio Identical progesterone has no known negative side effects and keeps the lining of the uterus from thickening thereby protecting against uterine cancer. Additionally, heavy bleeding can be managed by reducing PTGFR which is Prostaglandin F2 alpha receptor. Over the counter medicines like Naproxin and other non steroid anti enflammatory drugs reduce these levels. I for one, can't take them and have found a great alternative that is sustainable for me: high quality Omega 3 Fish Oil which reduces the F2 Alpha inflammation and I can take it every day. I've spent the last 5 years searching for sustainable ways to take care of myself without surgery. These years can be very tough for us women but I've learned that despite that fact, within myself is a core of health I can uncover and sustain by making myself my priority. Luckily, I have an MD who practices Integrative medicine and accupuncture. She is my partner in health and her agenda is just that.

Hi I was diagnosed with fibroids last week I am not sure how many or how big. My life was he'll withe heavy bleeding and huge clots I ended up in hospital with chronic anaemia and had to get 4 units of blood. I have been prescribed esmya which I have been told by consultant will shrink the fibroids for easier removal. Maybe this could be an option. As for managing the condition I am ot sure as I have been living a nightmare every month. Hope this helps and chin up because I know how dibillitating this condition is x

Hi Assy, sorry you are suffering ( like a lot of us) with your fibroids. There are other options before or instead of a hysterectomy, you'll find lots of information on this forum. I have found Esmya worked well, it's now been licensed for repeat use so that may help. Whatever you choose they are not a risk to you immediately so take time to look at the options.

    Hi Assy

Sorry to hear your situation. Large fibroids can be removed by having an Open Myomectomy surgery with an experienced skilled surgeon.  Do not have a hysterectomy if you do not want to. Surgeons who are not very skilled tend to push patients towards hysteroctomy as they consider it a simpler solution. Professor Mayonda is the best specialist in the UK for  removal of large fibroids, you can get a seccond opinion from him by having a consultation and depending on where you live in UK you can be referred to him.  He did my surgery in January removing 32 fibroids of varying sizes and my recovery went exceptionally well. He does not advice taking tablets for shrinkage as they can shrink the smaller fibroids so that they are not visible and then they reappear after surgery.  Some consultants are not skilled in removing large fibroids and so they recommend hysterectomy instead. What they should do is be honest put their pride aside and refer patients to consultants such as Professor Mayonda who specialise in that field. Do you research online.  In the meantime for the heavy flow ask you Doctor if they can prescribe Transexamic Acid tablets, they help with reducing the blood flow and incidentally they are used during surgery to reduce blood loss. I was on them for years and they do work if you take them for the first 3 days of the menstural flow. Transexamic Acid Tablets however do not shrink fibroids. All the  very best. Do your research online.
