Contact lenses and Sjogrens

Posted , 5 users are following.

Ive had Sjogrens Syndrome for approximately 20 years. My eyes are very dry now. Has anybody been OK to wear contact lenses as I know there are improvements in lenses since I was told years ago that I couldn't wear them.

any information would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Janet. I began wearing contact lenses about 6 months ago before I knew I had Sjogrens. I had to wear them at nighr and change them for day time. I had such dry eyes that when I opened my eyes in the morning they would tear my cornea. The contacts were a godsend. Then I saw a new eye surgeon who put a tiny patch into the worst eye with stem cells on it and it healed my eye. I still wear the contact lenses hiwever as I stll get dry eyes but they don't hurt as much. Hope this helps.

      Hi Gayle,

sorry to to hear how you've suffered - glad the surgeon has helped. Are your contacts prescription to replace glasses or special ones to treat dry eyes? I could do with contacts to replace prescription glasses and help dry eyes if they exist?

They are prescription but don't help my eyesight much.. I had an eye surgery that went bad and damaged my right eye for good. I definitely would find a doctor who will try contacts..there are new ones now that keep the eyes moist. It's hard to find an eye doc who will prescribe them but keep at it.

I tried but had no success.  My eyes are so dry now moisture levels at a one and two should be15.

Mandy how long ago did you try contact lenses. I couldn't do without them. Perhaps you weren't given the right ones?

      Hi Gayle,

It was a few years ago now. But I did work in a surgery clinic for eyes in America. Do contacts where properly fitted. I only managed to wear them for 30 minutes they felt absolutely awful in my eyes. I also hate wearing glasses but feel I have no other option. I am seeing the eye specialist next week so will ask the question about contact lens. But feel it will be a definitely not response lol x

My contact lenses at the soft kind and I am able to buy them at a decent price, so I cannot even tell they are in some of the time.

Good luck with your eye specialist and your eyes!

Hi ,  I got the best daily ones possible that have the most moisture and allow the most oxygen. Put eyedrops in about 10 to 30 mins before your lenses. Put some more drops in once lenses are in. If necessary, add more drops before eyes get irritatated  ( about hourly for me ) and put drops in 30 mins before removing lenses and again after removal, be super clean with hands. I used to take them out at lunch time and put in fresh ones for the afternoon. All that worked well for a couple of years so a regimen like that might you. Now I find them more difficult to tolerate and I dont seem to be able to get the correct prescription so I just  wear my glasses now. ATB.
