I'm 31 yr old female with bilateral hip dysplasia.

Told by a young hip specialist at Sheffield that I needed POA surgery on right hip to help preserve the socket untill I would need hip replacement. 10 month waiting list with Mr Madan at Sheffield so I opted for another consultation at Barlbrough NHS treatment centre, was told that POA would not work & the only option would be to have a complete hip replacement & later down the line POA surgery on left hip (at the moment is a symptomatic). Should i get a 3rd opinion? I was told by my GP that Mr Madam at sheffield was one of the top 5 surgeons in the country, & specializes in young adult hips. The surgeon at Barlbrough seemed overly keen to get me in, to the point the advised to ask for himself to perform the surgery as there were some surgeon's at Barlbrough whom he would not let operate on himself! Any advice greatly appreciated ?

I just found out that I also have bilateral hip dysplasia, but haven't consumed with a surgeon yet.

Did you have pain? What made you go to a doctor? Just curious...

I've had pain in my groin since 2003, I had just had my 1st child so the pain was put down to ligament damage. 13 Yrs of misdiagnosis & prescription after prescription of pain meds & I've finally got a diagnosis! I came of all pain relief last year as I was diagnosed with a cardiac problem, to be fair, the only thing I can't do is well more then half a mile. I swim 2 miles every day to keep myself in peak condition (front crawl only!) I can still work, but have had to change my car as my previous one had quite a high pedal, making it very painful to drive. All my symptoms were put down to poor Glutal strength, & was made to feel like it was my own fault. For anyone reading this with pain specific to their groin, please fight to get all the proper tests (x-Ray, CT). They WILL try to Palm you off with pain meds & physio.

Yes, get another opinion just because they are so different. This hip surgery is actually pretty difficult and not something you want to do repetitively so before they do anything look at what option is best for you.For them it's another day at the office, but this is your life and I'd want best results with the option you choose. The cost of long term pain on your body takes its toll as I'm sure you are aware ,so keep that in mind,.Take care

Hi Kat, I am quite a bit older than you 57 and am from Chesterfield, mine was just the usual OA, started with groin pain.  I went intially to Barlborough and although liked the hospital had doubts and didn't feel confident, I was told to put my RTHR off for as long as I could, lasted about another 9 months.  I went to my GP and we went on the choose and book system and I opted for Thornbury and intially saw the surgeon there, he then transferred to Claremont - where I had my op.  Although I don't have any advice on your particular problem there are numerous surgeons who are very experienced, some top of their fields there.  I would recommend getting a third opinion, you are so young and need to get it right, try and do some research about them too.
