What is wrong with me?? Blood in stool and toilet.

Hi,

Over the past 7 days I've been having blood in my stool and in the toilet. I've been to my GP and provided a stool sample. I've been awaiting the results, but i was in pain yesterday and the amount of blood in the toilet had increased a lot. So i went to the A&E where they did the usual checks and weren't able to detect any blood in my back passage, so they said it was further up. Fortunately they had the results from my stool sample and the doctor said the tests had come back clear of infection. They did a blood test and said my hemoglobin was OK, and that i hadn't lost much blood. The Doctor said to visit my GP if the pain and blood persists.

I plan to visit my GP Tuesday as the pain and blood is not going away. I'm slightly confused as there is an obvious problem but the tests have come back OK? No infection is a good thing right? so what is causing me this pain and all this blood?

Symptoms:

- Severe bloating.

- Abdominal pain.

- Pain whilst food is digesting.

- Needing the toilet 6 + times a day.

- Stool hasn't been solid for 7 days straight.

- Blood in stool. Purple/Dark red, and also fresh blood.

- This will be TMI but my stool smells fishy and there has been mucus.

I really hope someone can help, and appreciate any replies.

Thank you.

Hi matt, I'm not an authority on this but felt your distress so wanted to reply. I did a quick Internet search and it could be ulcerative colitis. As I said I'm not an authority but this may give you a starting point? If it is UC you can take medication that reduces inflammation and helps a lot

hope you get this resolved soon.

Do you suffer from piles as that can cause bleeding.  However that is normally red blood ,,,if it is darker blood it usually does come from much further up.  Keep going back to yur GP - every week ....if you are still suffering pain and bleeding.  Ask for a Coeliac disease test as well - see Coeliac Org UK website for infomation on this.  Perhaps they will also offer you a colonoscopy to check your lower bowel thoroughly.  Persist....you have to.

Thanks Sue. I appreciate your reply. I have also done some research and found that my symptoms match that of UC. However, i'm sure this would have been detectable in the stool sample? I have had a bout like this before, about a year ago, and then it suddenly stopped. Although it wasn't as severe. Something is definately not right.

    Thank you,

    Matt

Thanks for your reply caro. The GP and A&E Doctor both said that i don't have piles. The blood is dark and purple in the stool. Thanks for the info i will look this up later.

Well Matt, medical recommendation is always that if there are any changes to normal bowel movements which last more than a couple of weeks, and if there is blood and pain it should be checked out as soon as possible.  A referal to a Specialist would be a good idea if your GP cannot offer you any useful advice.  Request this if no further tests are offered you next week - if problems still persist.  NICE Guidelines to GPs is that they should always test for Coeliac disease before diagnosing IBS.  A specialist would check you out thorougly and hopefully put your mind at rest.  Good Luck.

Yeah, I'm sure my GP will tell me im fine as the stool sample is apparently OK. I did send the same early on before all symtoms arose. I will request to see a specialist. I'm scheduled to have another more details blood test Tuesday, so hopefully that will show something.

      Many Thanks.
