Acid Reflux and Inflammed Esophagus?

Hello, I started experiencing esophagus problems all of a sudden about two months ago. It started one evening right after I finished supper, I felt like I had a lump of food stuck in my esophagus, rignt between my breast. It did not hurt, just felt like a lump of food just sitting there. I drank a lot of water and walked around the yard trying to get the food (?) to go down. After about an hour, it seemed to be ok. This continued to happen to me every evening after eating, but the symptom started lasting longer. At that time it was just my evening meals, then as the weeks moved forward it started happening with all meals, just worse in the evening. I made an appointment with my Gastroenterologist, who I use to see ten years ago for acid reflux. He scheduled an endoscopy, and the results showed no stricture, and no cancer. He said my esophagus was a little red and inflamed and prescribed me rabeprazole sodium at 40 mg daily. This seemed to make the stuck food feeling go away but caused me really horrible insomnia and constipation, so I had to stop taking it. I now take Nexium at 20 mg twice a day, but it is not helping at all. I am having a hard time believing this symptom has anything to do with acid reflux, as I have not had any acid reflux symptoms, or issues in years. There are no symptoms at all, no heart burn, nothing. Does anyone else have symptoms like this? Could it be anything else? Thanks.

Thank you for sharing. Having this feeling everytime you eat something will bring anxiety to mix for sure. My stuck/lump feeling is not sore. Just concerned as to why it happens, and what to do to be normal again.

Hello! This is for everyone that has been experiencing problems with there esophagus. Everything I see here on this blog sounds very familiar with me and my esophagus symptoms I've had for the passed year. I finally gave up after treatment from my stomach doctor wasn't working well and went straight to an allergist. There I find out I am very allergic to wheat. Never have been before in my life but it was something I grew into. I have only been eating gluten free for the passed week and am already feeling incredible. It might cost thousands of dollars to get a allergy test to see what you're allergic, but it is worth it. I know how it feels and it's honestly something you can't live with. Everyone is different no matter what but I am hoping I can help a few with you. Goodluck!

      love,

      Cameron

Hi Cameron, have you had any relief with the esophagus pain ever since you had the allergy test?

Thank you for sharing this. I have felt like something's been stuck in my throat off and on for over a month. It feels like I'm swallowing a large chunk of dry bread every time I swallow. Even when it's just water. I am wondering if I have a gluten allergy bc it seemed to get really bad after taking a grain supplement and eating a lot of white bread. Anyway, glad you are feeling better and I hope the GI Dr can help me. I will cut out gluten completely until I figure out what it is. Praying God heals us! ??

Hi I have had a PH STUDY TEST; where they thread a tube through your nose into your throat to your stomach'. It was Horrible' this was to test whether I had sever acid reflux, though the specialist had confirmed that I didnt have it and My GP Begged to differ and told me I do have acid reflu due to the symptoms Im experiencing, I have a nasty tast of food coming up into my throat' though I dont actually vomit unless I have foods that can trigger it off, and mine seems to be chocoalte -(Pineapple lumps). I could not stop vomitting'. for 2 hours. It was quite draining and exhausting'. though I wasnt sure what was happening with me'.. Iv been to the doctors for loads of tests You hame it, The CT SCAN, Barium Swallow test, endoscopy, PH STUDY TEST'. I think for me the CT SCAN AND PH STUDY test was the worse tests Iv had... they inject you which youre lying down'. it almost feels like youve  done ( pee) lol. or something. and youre whole stomach lights up;..I was so tired and drained'. I ended up having to go to the toilet afterwards, I was not in a Good way due to the DRINK I had to skull down'. which was 3 litres of it'. it had a smell like Bubblegum. I had to drink it all within 2 hors before THEY COULD DO THE TEST'. Iv had numerous of blood tests, I think Im overdue'. so I think I have to go back '. pretty soon'. Im fed up .. a new symptom that I have are major chest pains, pins and needles'.. on both sides'. I also have an inhaler'. When I tried asking the nurse in the breast care centre, she implied oh its nothing it maybe just hormones'. I refuse to believe that as I think sometimes their words arent genuine'. and hypocritical if that makes sense. I dont understand why they are in that field of what they call expertise'???

It's refreshing to hear that I'm not crazy thinking that I have food strucked in my throat. And comforting that I'm not alone. I appreciate everyone's comments, it has made reflect on the symptoms and causes. As for me it's defently gonna be controlled by a diet. When I eliminated from my diet sugar, lactose and gluten and added mineral water at meal times but i didn't seemed to noticed the difference of feeling well UNTIL, i welcome these foods initially in small portions here and there and now during the holidays more and more and I feel the lump in my throat and the very mild reflex. I will pay better attention to my food intake and report back to you guys if with mindful food intakes these discomforts diminish. Until later, thanks guys! Happy New Year.

Hi, I'm about to make an appt at a gastrointestinal dr tomorrow and I know my family dr already wants me too do the endoscopy test with the camera done your throat but I've never had any surgeries . I don't take anything that makes me feel loopy as I suffer with severe panick disorder so my question is how bad is the test ? What do they give you to relax you? Did it work?

Hi, thought I would pop in here.  I have severe panic and anxiety so was dreading it.  I have had two - and was so nervous I was never off the loo.

They are nothing like you think.  They prep you first like in your glamorous robe then the nurse checks blood pressure.  Then they put you on a stretcher by which time the panic is rising - but all that stops within 5 seconds of them sedating you (local) - it is bliss to say the least.  You are a little sleepy and so relaxed it is untrue.  Still relaxed when you are on your side and the camera is used, took about 7 mins and someone chats to you all the time.  Then you go to recovery for about 15 mins and you are still so relaxed as though you have had several glasses of wine.  I wish I could have a bottle of the stuff to sniff at for home and social doos where my panic gets on my nerves.

Hope this helps - that is literally how it is.  Don't worry - enjoy the lovely warm sedation feeling.

P.S.  After the chap had finished and before I was wheeled away, I asked for a badge for being brave and he laughed (think I was a teeny bit tidly actually) lol.

Thank you sooo much for responding. You really have eased my mind about the test. Right now I'm on protonix 40 mg , I've been on it for 2 weeks and it really seems to be helping . I'm just really. nervous about when I stop taking it (about 2 more weeks) if the symptoms come back I will be going. A k to dr and I know they will schedule testing. I unfortunately cmcame across this heart stopping article to me because about a year ago I started with bad calluses on my feet , never thought much about due to having numerous pedicures . Well tonight I'm on Facebook and come across an article about having callisses can be due to esophagus cancer . So I'm so freaking out thinking that's what I have . Thank you for responding and making a extreme panic attack woman find some comfort . You are awesome ! I'll keep you updated .

Oh boy, what a load of bunkum - calluses  on your feet related to cancer - no I am not going with this one - Facebook can be stupid at times and scare mongering.  I am a panic person and google far too much and then think the worst.  I am on forums for stomach issues and have never come across this.  I have had calluses before and my camera jobbies, one 6 years ago, the other last year, showed esophagitis and hiatal hernia and reflux to which I was precribed PPI's.  I don't take them as I don't like them and use Zantac am and pm along with Mastic Gum at nigh and zinc carnosine during the day (that heals the stomach lining).  I am much better and as for calluses - well I will just wear a larger size shoe.

Don't worry - I  personally think this is nonsense. Hey and I am Mrs Panic lol smile x

Keep updating - coz I know I am right.

Hi Gwen , thank you so much for responding and being some comfort into my stressed out world. I'll be getting off my protonix tomorrow . I've already been on it a few days more than the dr advised me but after reading people having withdrawals , heart palpitations and other symptoms after getting off of it , I'm sure it's time to get off before I cause any damage from the medication but of course I'm a nervous wreck about getting off the protonix because I'm so scared of having the agaonizing discomfort in my chest again. So wish me luck and I will keep you posted. Thanks for all your reassurance .

I have had most test done except a colonoscopy. All is normal. The intestinal specialist came up aerophagia! So, this is what i'm doing. Prilosec 20mg twice a day 1 hour before meal, Gaviscon twice a day 2hours after meal or when needed, and most importantly BACLOFEN 10mg  twice a day with food. I had improvement is 3 days. After 6 weeks I really can tell it helps! We still don't the original cause, but this helps for now.

I have also thought about nerves causing the acid build up, but IDK why all of a sudden it's giving me trouble.
