My Reflux Hell!!

Posted , 80 users are following.

I just wanted to let everyone know about my story and just how ill this reflux can make you feel. I gave birth to my second child and 4 months after began to feel tired and drained, general lack of appetite, shortness of breath, chronic rhinitis and sinus pain and an odd feeling down my upper left!

i began getting pains in my stomach, and my weight began to drop. It was difficult to say what was related to post baby weight loss and what was abnormal. I felt dreadful. Then i started suffering with a lump in my throat and difficulty swallowing. Food was getting stuck in my throat and I felt utterly dreadful.

After many visits to my Gp, who suggested I had post natal depression, followed by anxiety. Then the sickness began. I couldn't eat, felt nausea 24 hours a day! It was hell.

Despite my protests that I was happy it was just the feeling of lousiness everyday that was wearing me down, I ended up been put on diazepam tablets first. They over prescribed the dose, I couldn't get out of bed for weeks! I didn't actually know they were valium, and that they should not just be stopped. I stopped them and ended up in hospital for a week. I was vomitting daily. I had an endoscopy in hospital which I had begged for as I was feeling so ill. It showed nothing! They tried 12 different anti-sickness drugs to stop my vomitting....non of which worked! By this time, I had lost 2 stone in weight and was convinced I had cancer. All the blood works I had done showed nothing, apart from low calcium?

They sent me home from hospital and told me to take some more diazapam, I was horrified! I was so weak I could hardly walk from the weight loss and sickness.

I continued to be sick every day for four months, I laid in bed too weak to move around. I felt so utterly dreadful i cannot explain!

Finally, out of sympathy for me, my GP sent me to an ENT specialist to apparently 'prove' to me that there was nothing wrong with my throat and the difficulty in swallowing i was experiencing was 'all in my head'

I recall his 2 line letter to the ENT specialist. \"this woman is suffering from anxiety please reassure her there is nothing wrong with her throat\" He smirked at me, numbed my throat and shoved a camera down it. As a precaution he sent me for a barium swallow!

This swallow was the key to my diagnosis....the minute they laid me back on the bed...my whole stomach contents came straight back up on their screens. I was diagnosed with Gross Reflux and am now waiting to see the Consultant. I paid privately for the following:-

Ultrasound scan of stomach and pelvis

Colonoscopy

Ultrasound of Throat

Chest X Ray

I was put on diazapam, anti depressents (in the end I volunteered to see a pyschiatric nurse just to prove to them I wasn't suffering from PNDepression, Anxiety and anything else!)

I had a week in hospital where blood tests and endoscopy showed normal..therefore I was sent home suffering from anxiety - because their little minds could not stretch past test normal test results!

I actually began to doubt myself in the end, despite my screams that there was SOMETHING WRONG!

I am on 600mg Ranitidine daily and have Pharmeceutical Gaviscon. It helps but i'm still suffering! I also take Fortisip nutritional drinks daily to ensure vitamins are absorbed more readily. My GP hasn't apologised, but now at least he can't blame PND or Anxiety!

I sleep with my bed head raised 6 inches, and eat small regular meals. I drink copious amounts of bottled water only! I have more of an appetite now, haven't been sick for 3 months. I still get nausea, chest pain and problems with my throat and swallowing. I think back to how bad I felt and I can now manage in comparison.

Don't underestimate how bad this dreadful Reflux can make you feel. I was convinced i was going to die I was so weak and poorly!

Hi i've never been diagnosed with acid reflux but I do get similar symptoms where i feel i cant breath through my nose properly due to sinuses and I get a whole heap of weird symptoms ranging from chronic tiredness, a sense of breathlessness and major headaches to indegestion and strange pulsating feelings in my stomach which then causes weird sensations through my body mainly on the left side. These make me feel completely spaced out and i have constant pain in my left shoulder and through my back. I have been through loads of scans xrays and mri even had a lumberpuncture to rule out multiple schlerosis This happened after the birth of my 2nd child. I have recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic migraines but i just wondered if acid reflux could actually cause all these other symptoms. The worst is that i feel that just under my chest to the left it feels really heavy or that something has caved in and thats when i get breathless and the strange sensations happen. They tried to tell me it was post natal depression too or that I was anxious so i had to confront my old gp and midwives and put them straight on a few things. They finally came to the conclusion that i was completely in control and I ended up telling them what I felt would help. Usually i take gaviscon as this does ease the heaviness and ease the weird symptoms but if I dont catch it in time i do get really dizzy and feel extremely tired. So i'm glad you were able to stand up for yourself and put them straight because it does cause exteme hell for people who suffer with it and also their families too.

    Hi Mags,

You sound exactly how I was and still am, feeling as though you are banging your head against the wall, I had my little boy in 2006 by c section and since then I haven't been the same since!! I have continuous joint pain and feel lethargic even if I have had ample sleep and had sinus problems, trouble with breathing etc, just like you......

I had blood taken in 2007 and the doctor at the time said I had inflammation but nothing serious.......anyway I had seen a Rhuematologist whom said I needed to loose weight and was the cause of my pain...... anyway of course this so called professional was talking rubbish as I was the one that was feeling like I had been dragged through a bush backwards or in the boxing ring.... anyway after enough was enough I decided to change Surgeries as the doctor I was seeing didn't believe me and so I moved to the Surgery my hubby was at...... this very kind doctor said to me he couldn't treat me until he took my file home...... and to this he said he was referring me to the top Rhuematologist at our local hospital, anyway the Rhuemo said I had Polyarthrits and was doing further blood work to rule out other things....... this is when my diagnosis began...... The Rheumatologist referred me to a liver Specialist as like my new doctor had seen I had Raised SED Rate for 4 years and so the AMA test was done which diagnosed me with PBC, and now I have to have tablets to slow down this auto-immune disorder.

I am not saying you have the same as me as there is a lot of illnesses have overlapping symptoms, but like you I had symptoms like yours and if it wasn't for my present doctor now I do not know what may have happened I dread to think...... Please ask for your blood work to be done and ask to see a Rhuemotologist as they can only do these specific tests to rule out all disorders and then you should receive the correct medication to help your complaint. I was diagnosed in Dec 09 so all this is new to me and is still a shock to the system, I just hope this may help you get to the route of the correct diagnosis.

    Regards

    Hi Phebs,

My present doctor said that acid reflux can cause breathing difficulties too so get help off your GP, and if he or she doesn't listen see someone else as it took me a long time to get a decent doctor, as I changed surgeries two years ago as I felt I was banging my had against the wall!!!!! last Surgery said I had inflammation in my blood due to anti-flammatories I was on due to joint pain.... I knew I wasn't imagining things!!!! so changed surgeries all together, and it was the best move I did!!!! Have they done blood work with you? like thyroid and things like that, as I believe I never had asthma, I just think it is the thyroid gland that kind of clams up when I am stressed, if that make sense... I had lung capacity tests done and they said my lungs were healthy 2 years younger for example lol...... I would ask the doctor for blood tests to be done. You shouldn't be suffering xx

I hope you get the answers soon xxxx Take care x.

Omg....I know just how you must have been feeling. There were days when I would feel so weak and tired. My weight dropped also. I had what they called Racoon eyes because I felt so exhausted all the time. i was convinced that I either had cancer or some type of heart problem. I can't count on my fingers and toes the number of times I have made trips to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. I still haven't actually been diagnosed with any type of acid reflux, but they told me at the ER that's what it was. I also have pain in my face and severe sinus problems. I am relieved just to hear someone else has experienced the same thing and I wasn't losing my mind. There are times of the day when I just literally feel like I am going to pass out and fall asleep because I am so tired. That feeling usually lasts about 10-15 minutes, then all of a sudden it just disappears. I didn't start feeling these symptoms until after I had my daughter who is now 1. But I am 5 months pregnant right now and the symptoms are worse, although now, I have kind of learned how to cope with them, because STRESS only makes the situation worse. I hope you feel better and please feel free to ask me any questions, because I know just how you feel and what you were going through........

      Hi Kera,

I too have made several trips to the ER. If they told you there that you have gastric reflux, I would be fairly confident with that diagnosis.  In my case they say "gastritis" since my main complaint is severe stomach pain, but I get stomach acid so much that I have to live on Prilosec.  Unfortunately that, together with an antacid isn't helping.  I keep feeling like acid is going up my sinuses when I sleep, it burns, makes me miserable, I can't eat...I need to do something else.  I'm going to start with putting my head up higher in bed.  I've had very similar problems, so I feel for you.  I hope your pregnancy went, well, and you've seen some improvement.  Thanks for sharing, so we don't feel alone.

      Hi Kate

I am suffering ear, eyelid, neck and shoulder aches/pains which I know is a type of heartburn as I remember having these feelings in the past before this diagnoses of gerd.

I called my doc earlier as I wanted to know if I could take ranitidine in the evenings as my 1x 40 mg omeprazole not covering me for 24 hours....they promised he or they would let me know by the end of the day so at 6 when I hadn't heard, the receptionist said oh yes, you'll hear back today.....it's now 9 pm and he couldn't be bothered. I guess I'll just be breathless and in pain all night because I don't have an answer.

They are meant to care aren't they?

      Hope things/pain aren't too bad?

      Hi James

Still having symptoms...pains in arms, pressure in chest and gullet, breathlessness...am following a detox diet for reflux but not a lot of change.

Don't know what to do and who to believe anymore...is all so confusing when different docs say different things.

At the moment I'm just 'keep on keeping on'.

Taking 20mg omeprazole (which lasts a few hours before neck pains around collar bone start), then ranitidine after lunch (75g), then 20 mg omeprazole again at 5 (an hour before dinner) and then gaviscon near bedtime (11.30ish).Wake up breathless, then it comes and goes in strength throughout day?????!!!!

So fed up eating bland, fat free stuff, not consuming alcohol, chocolate, chilli's, etc and still no improvement.

      Thank you for asking smile

      Hi Kate

      Good to hear from you.

Yes, I do get an achey feeling in collar bone...and it's weird but I tend not to feel acid coming up (unless some mornings in bed), but in collar bone, radiating up into ears, eyelids, jaw, back if throat, between shoulder blades...

      Weird.

My husband is asking his work if they will loan us the cash just to get a consultation to hopefully rush me through rather than living this 6-8 week nightmare

I know it's easy to say but I believe that it's to do with silent reflux.

Try the 2 week reflux detox. Book is by Dr koufman.

      Am trying it to see?

Easier said than done, and I will have my normal meltdown later to my poor husband, but try and think positively......very hard I know.

      Let's keep in touch.

      Hi Lindsey

Really appreciate you getting back, Im borderline suicidal from this pain,

I just got a call from Hospital to go for neck MRI on Thursday dear God what will that turn up!

I have seen other people suggest Dr. Koufman Diet also but I want to

get tests out of way first, why do you have to suffer for 8 weeks to see a consultant? thats such torture, like you I dont feel any burning coming up my throat, I raised my bed up 6inches and take 300mg Rainitidine

each night, might aswell be taking smarties.

Again like you everyone is so sick of my complaining for months, I dont blame them, but its so isolating.

Many thanks for your company, will let you know what MRI shows.

      Thinking of you

My GP has referred me and it's a 6-8 week wait on nhs.

      Have you had any ppi's?

Mine don't appear to be working, and as we speak I feel like someone has their little hand around the base of my throat. Arms ache too (at the tops)

I felt suicidal yesterday morning, and the night before.....My moods go up and down dependent on how I'm feeling.

Life feels so unfair...gave up smoking 6 months ago, ran and exercised (have never really been into it) and ate healthily.

I'm scared my husband will have enough of me. He's only 38. I am so anxious at times I envision my kids at my funeral.

I really hope that you get some answers after your scan.

If you want to chat, just message.

It will get better once we know what's what.

Yes Lindsey I was on omeprazole for a couple of months caused me

awful diarhea, so doc changed me to rainitidine, I get pain in my arms but more like a burning sensation mostly to the fronts at top like its in the muscles maybe, there are so many symptoms its hard to keep track.

I know how you feel regarding not being around, I have felt like i must be dieing for months the fatigue is crushing too.

We have same problem with HSE in Ireland everything is weeks waiting,

I am too much of a worrier to sit around waiting so I have borrowed a lot of money and paid out a frightening amount on doctors scans and cameras and am still suffering daily since last March.

Please God things will improve for both of us.

      Hi Tracy,

I have been suffering with what I have been told by my dr acid reflux since December 2015, my first symptoms was stomach pain, heartburn, tiredness and chest pains, and belching. My doctor has put me on 3 lots of anti acid tablets which did not work ... My doctor referred me in January of this year, but unfortunately the waiting times are 11 months, over the last few months my symptoms has got worse, Tightness off chest, trouble breathing, feeling like I have a lump in my throat and chest, I scheduled a dr appointment again who said I might have Ashma due to acid, so he put me on a pump which did not help at all, I also had a lung function test which was all clear.

I paid privately to see a consultant who has suggested for me to have an endoscopy in which will cost me 1200 which this is something I just cannot afford, I also have 2 children in which I feel I'm missing their youth with this illness, its really getting me down, my partner has been so supportive throughout. But feel I am constantly a pain moaning all the time, I just wish this could be resolved, NHS waiting times for a endoscopy is 46 weeks which is a disgrace. I hope I have helped and knowing your not alone x

      Hi Kate

Glad you've had your scan, and I hope the results are good.

Have had a couple of horrendous days with breathlessness/pressure. It lasts for hours, then subsides slightly, then strikes again.

Son's sportsday yesterday (he's 9), and has noticed my sadness at illness, so although felt awful, went along and cheered him on whilst husband went to doctors for me. Saw a locum and he prescribed 30 mg lansoprasole instead of 40mg omeprazole

He also said with the amount of weight I've lost that we need to ask my doc to rush me through for endoscopy within 2 weeks, whilst awaiting date for ent camera.

Funnily enough, this came through today....it's in 3 weeks - at least I think it is, or that's just the chat??

My doc said no to both referral s at once, but locum says to push for it. I just want them all to agree on meds, tests, etc......am anxious and confused as it is.

Reading stuff on kindle not helpful either......people never recovering/never getting diagnosis/eating boring food forever/feeling breathlessness.

      Stay in touch.

      Hi Tracy

I can relate my nightmare started 3 weeks ago when I went to er for a severe panick attack they ran EKG and chest xrays and everything came back normal same week went back to er due to dizziness weakness and shortness of breath stabbing pain in chest this time they did EKG chest xrays and blood work everything came back normal I cried because I didn't have answers as to why I was feeling like this then Dr asked if I have been having heart burn or acid reflux I said no to heart burn but did remember waking up 2 weeks prior choking on stomach acid and not being able to breath he then proscribed me prilosec for acid reflux and ativan for anxiety well I haven't taken prilosec after reading horrible side effects so started looking into natural healing which is a super bland diet. Ever since this all started I have been on a roller coaster of depression anxiety and panick i get 3 to 4 hrs of sleep I feel weak and dizzy shortness of breath tightness in chest lump in my throat dry cough neck pain upper back pain little weird pains in arms and sometimes legs ear fullness which then leads to a tight full feeling in head or back of head under ears. I also have three children and a hubby and I feel awful because I spend most my time consumed with negative thoughts its effecting my job as well I keep getting panick attacks or feeling super stressed with things I have always been able to handle. I have Dr appointment on Aug 4th seems so far away I hope for answers and I don't because what if it is something more serious than acid reflux even though I have had EKG xrays and blood work I feel their missing something. Everyone keeps telling me snap out of it its just anxiety but the anxiety is coming from how terrible I feel and how rapid my weight is dropping and no sleep. Sorry for long message just feeling hopeless I want my life back too I miss being myself.

Hope we all start to feel well soon because this is no way to live.

Hey Lindsey, it sounds like you and I are on the same page as far as our health issues are concerned. How are you doing with all of this? Have you gotten relief from any other mess yet?

      Hi Tracy,

I am having exact same symptoms. I was even in hospital and they treated me for acid reflux however I had allergic reaction to Protonix and had to come off medication. I’m now on Zantac but still have symptoms especially pressure in chest. I had stress test and ekg to rule out heart but that’s always in the back of my mind since my chest has so much pressure and pain in my back. I can’t eat barely or it gets worse so I’ve lost 15 pounds in 5 weeks. Did you find out what was Wrong with you? If so is it better and how did you treat it? I feel hopeless. I had endoscopy and that came back normal at hospital but my current GI suspects they missed a hiatal hernia so I’m going to have him do another one soon. I also have a lot of burping and gas.

Hi Katie, I know it’s been 2 years since this thread but I just wanted to know what the results of your nodules testing were? I’ve had severe pain across my collarbone into my throat for over 3 months now and a friend suggested I check my thyroid. How are you doing now? I was diagnosed with gastritis and esophagitis 2 years ago but then last year my scopes were normal but this pain is the worst ever! No meds have helped me and I’ve tried everything sad

      Hi shawnie

The result of my nodules test was that I have a collection if small nodules and a goiter on my thyroid, they are be nine, they cause me pain every so often and it goes right across my collar bone especially if I get say like a cold or flu, I have since been diagnosed with acid reflux which is a lot more bothersome, daily symptoms, on omeprazole for it, hope you feel better soon, contact me anytime for chat. Hi , I hope that you have found relief from your pain. I have been suffering from GERD for 2 years and its been hell. I can tell you that I started using  organic apple cider vinegar when heartburn would act up and it does help. But I do need to be on a medicine. I was on Nexium which worked well but I got off it because of side effects. then went to omeprozale and for me it didn't do the trick so now I'm on pantoprazole 40mg. I was waking up in the night  our of breath coughing and so cold, I didn't know what was wrong I thought I was just pre meonopausal. Come to find out that the PPI's cause iron and b12 deficencys. So a long story short please have them check your vitamin levels I am also on vitamin D. I hope you have found relief but if not I hope this helps. sorry for the misspelled words lol.

Hi Katie, thanks for your reply and sorry it took so long to reply. Since my last post to you life has been a living hell for me. I was diagnosed with hpylori and I just finished quadruple therapy today and it hurts so bad! I have what feels like stabbing and choking pain in my throat and chest area 24/7 for like 8 months now. None of the meds help. I was just put on cymbalta and clonazepam due to the extreme anxiety it is causing me. Wish it would get better, hurts so much 😭

Hi Kate, before I was even struggling with the throat pain I was suffering from gastritis and esophagitis for two years and the amount of different meds and vitamins and supplements I’ve tried were endless. I even went to a dietician to change my diet to many different types. Overall I lost like 60 pounds from this horrible experience and they did find that my gallbladder was diseased and took it out in December. Some of the problems went away but this scary throat thing took its place. My specialist thinks it’s nutcracker esophagus syndrome and refererred me for a manometry test and 24hr ph(which has a 6 month waiting list) but even those symptoms don’t really match what I’m going through. It’s frustrating because they keep on treating me like it’s no big deal and I’m in agony 24/7 and losing my mind.

Have things been better for you?

      Hi shawnie.

I was afraid to stay on omeprazole as I read so much about the damage they do term so I'm now taking ranitidine twice a day and I'm doing fine so far but as you know you never know when a flair up will start
