My auntie has had a venous skin ulcer since just before Christmas. It´s getting worse day by day. She has the dressing changed regularly at an ulcer clinic but the fluid semms to get heavier & heavier , she constantly has wet feet and ankles as a result. What is there to be done? The NH ulcer clinic has referred her to Charing Cross hospital but they´ve cancelled her appointment(unforeseen circumstances) and so far , even after nearly four months of suffering she´s still not seen a specialist. She´s had four courses of anti-biotics, her leg´s infected. What can you suggest she does now?

Thanking you in anticipation,

Brenda Gallagher.

My mum has also had a venous leg ulcer since November. She's had two courses of antibiotics (one of which made her feel really ill). It nearly cleared up at one point and the nurse (who had been treating her) said she could have a bath and act normally. After that it flared up again. We are now applying Manuka honey twice daily - well, my dad is. It stings a lot and keeps her awake at night, but she feels it is improving. I think the honey, which has to be the UMF 16+ especially for external use, will prevent any infection, but not sure if it's actually helping it to heal. I ordered it directly from new Zealand. She rests her leg on a chair when sitting down, to raise it as much as possible. It sounds as if bandaging as explained here would be more helpful than the stocking tube that she currently has. hope this helps your auntie.

Hi you need to take your father to a leg ulcer specialist, depending on where in the country you live there are some very good services. The specialist will do some simple tests to work out what may be causing the ulcer and then give appropriate treatment. The cause of the majority of ulcers is about poor blood return to the heart, if this is the reason your father has an ulcer it can easily be treated with compression bandages, however compression must not be used until he has had a Doppler test which ensure the blood supply to the leg is adequate.

This web site : http://www.legulcerforum.org/patientsleaflets has some excelent leaflets for patients about leg ulcers.

Ask your GP to be referred to the Leg Ulcer Service or if you do not have one to the Tissue Viability Nurse. If you don't have one of those either contact the Leg Ulcer Forum and they will advise you.

    Good luck.

Hallo brenda im no expert but you should take your aunt back to your district nurse asap.I am currently suffering from a leg ulcer on my right leg for 12 months now I've gone through all the stages that uclers go its amost healed up then got infected.I attempted and was unsuccessful with the manuka honey and in fact made me ulcer worse! at this moment in time I am changing my dressing three times a week (meopore ) its called using a special healing honey(available at the chemist only through prescription) called mesitran ointment. It is good stuff seems to be doing me good but its a long process and expect it will take another year to heal this damn ulcer.I wish your aunt good luck and hope she gets better, all the best finn[/b]

Seems to be a mixture of results from using this manuka honey. Am wondering if there are reasons for this, eg does it make a difference if using just the honey by itself, or together with compression bandaging? Also was trying to learn more about the mesitran ointment mentioned. It says it uses medical grade honey, but not what type of honey that is. Am wondering if that also is actually the manuka honey but just mixed with other things? or if there is also another type?

Did find that you don't need to order it from New Zealand, you can get tubes of medical grade / sterilised manuka honey here in the UK, - http://www.newzealandhoneyshop.co.uk/manuka-honey/manukacare-18.html

I have been told that anything that you can do do boost circulation in the leg will help, eg any exercise that can be done, or massaging the legs daily etc are little bits that can help.[/url]

hello Brenda, I have had every sign and sympton as you say your aunt is having . . as you posted your quiery over a year ago I do hope that she has had some kind of relief and is much better now, if she has, maybe you could let me know on this forum what her condition is now and how she came to get further help. I have had every treatment going but someone on here has mentioned Solcoseryly Gel, I have checked it out on Google and it is quite popular. I have asked my pharmacist to order it for me. To make matters worse I also suffer from arthritis in my hip and knee but sometimes the pains coming from the wet ulcerations on the lower leg/calfs, drive me to distraction.

    Thanks for you co-ioeration

    Kathie

I have a lot of extremely positive experience i would like to share with you. I would like to particularly draw the attention of those who are suffering from long-time persistent skin problems, such as wounds. Over the years I suggested the Arquebuse Water with 75 herbs to countless of friends, whose families had these kind of problems. In many cases the wounds recovered fully, epithelization occurred. It was simply indescribable the gratitude what I got. The most recent case, I suggested to my dermatologist friend to buy the Arquebuse Water with 75 herbs to her husband who had an ulcerated hole in the sole. For several years he had an unhealed wound about 2 cm deep and 5 cm in diameter. My friend works as a dermatologist in a clinic in Budapest, but she could not help her husband. She started to use the herbal essence. The full epithelization took four full months. Dermatologist colleagues came over from other institutes to look at the incredible results. My dermatologist friend happily called the Swiss producer and reported the miracle that happened to her husband. It was a beautiful day for everyone!
