Hi Brenda, I was taking Azathiprine for PBC/AIH felt ok before taking it, apart from the odd day when my symptoms were kicking in. The specialist had prescribed steroids which I had been taking since March, and I started July 20th on AZA within a week I started feeling ill, fever, sick, having to run to the loo, after a week I went to my GP and told her that I had not taken the AZA the previous day due to feeling so ill,but she told me to start taking it again which I did and was sick within the hour, I called the surgery and she then told me to STOP taking it. Luckily I was due to see the gastroenterologist the following week who confirmed that I was reacting badly to the drug and to never take it again, within 3 days of not taking AZA my liver levels had come down dramatically from the raised levels,It took me 3 weeks to get back to feeling normal (what ever that means) I will never ever take that medication again I have never felt so poorly in my life. If you are still feeling the same seek medical advice. Good luck.

Oh my goodness Barbara - I'm in the hospital right now.  The meds finaaly caused a fever of 103.7, has elevated my liver abd gallbladder numbers, not to mention they almost took out my gallbladder.  Thanks goodness someone thought of doing an MRI on me to confirm the other tests which showed my gallbadder is fine.  Hopegully I will be able to go home tomorrow,  Thank you do much for you reply.  I will NEVER USE THIS MEDICINE AGAIN!  frown

This drug is so powerful and I think dangerous although they warn you of symptoms that might occur I don't think we expect to experience feeling so poorly, although for some patients they seem to do well. I befriended a patient on PBC website who ended up with bowel cancer! Hope you make a speedy recovery good job you sorted it out. All the best. Barbara

Thanks Barbara.  I think I  might go home today YAY!  I read that only abut 3% of people who take AZA have symptoms like we did.  You really lifted me and I appreciate it.  cheesygrin

Poor you, if it is any help it took me three weeks to start to feel better after my short spree of Azathioprine I am waiting to here if my liver levels are still falling after my latest blood test hope so as after 3 days of not taking the tablets my levels were much lower so I hope they are still falling. Are you still in hospital or at home? Keep fighting. Regards Barbara
