Left Hip replacement. Horrible pain

I am american. I found this forum and I hope it's ok I post. I'm desperate for answers.  I had a left anterior approach hip replacement August 29 and I've been in exteme pain ever since. My left leg has swollen up 2 x's it's size, I have gained almost 20 pounds since i'm home which is not food related because the pain keeps me from eating. My pain is in the groin area, front area and back area. My incision is healing with meltaway stitches. I have a wonderlul doctor who has taken me off PT entiredly for 2 weeks until I feel better but I still don't understand wha't is wrong. My doctor has put me on Lacex  to get the fluid to go down which its not moving..he doesnt seem worried about this. I'm about to scream and have.  I have a good support system, My husband and my 17 year old son help me so much, they are angels but something has to give. Does anyone know why I have this intense pain? Other than the fact I just had surgery? It's not supposed to be this bad, I know it.

I am in Southern Calf and I had the anterior 4 yrs ago next month.

You are not even 4 weeks post op, you have a LOT of healing to go thru....believe me. Take your pain meds, I was still taking opiads in the early stages of this replacement....

I have NO groin pain as this is the main reason. I did this replacement, broken crumbled bone at right groin.....

I've been taking Grape Seed Ex for 19 yrs and it does address fluid build up and I had some but upped my grape seed ex during that period....it knocked out the fluid.....I don't like the drugs they give us, so thankfully I'm a HUGE supplement person.

I am dealing with Femoral Nerve damage from the anterior and IT band damage and it's 4 yrs soon..... but no GROIN pain and generally no pain from the hip surgery area but the damage done to nerves....

Again, take your pain meds, ice and be patient....you have a long way to go with the healing.......j

Some more thoughts on the Anterior, and I had NO help when I came home from hospital and I was 72, I think you are much younger....I had 5 pretty darn good months of recovery, hardly used a walker, a cane a few times outside for walks and to this day, no help is needed...I keep a cane in the back of my car, just in case....

The Anterior from all I hear has the best recovery etc....but be on the watch for leg discrepancy....which seems to happen with all replacements.....I didn't realize how much difference there was until maybe a year or more out....now I wear a 3/4" lift in my right shoe....but I believe a lot of stress damage was done on other joints due to this discrepancy.

I deal with plenty of OA bodywide and now all joints are worse since body alignement is what it now is.

We've been thru Major surgery and a body that has been changed significantly.....I didn't realize all this until after the fact.

Would I do it again now that I know my outcome, I don't know but think of that often. I know one thing don't want to do it again...

Hang in and be patient and take those pain meds..... Grape Seed Ex is wonderful for circulation bodywide and does clean the blood and more.....

Just google: Grape Seed Ex and Edema

      Hi,

What dose of grape seed extract did you take?  How often?  My leg fluid is monumental and doesn't seem to be going anywhere!

      Thanks.

On the weight gain, we have to be aware than ever on what we put in our mouths....I sure am since I can no longer move as I did all my early life...

I bring no more bread in my house for starters....use romaine lettuce leaves for my sandwich wrap.....and resist sugar stuff as much as I can and truly this is important, junk foods too....

Veggies, protein and good clean water.....a sugar treat now and then, fresh pineapple is a treat for me, a good gala apple and a melon treat now and then too.

Hello love, there is nothing worse than being in pain, take your meds regular, ice for 20mins on 20 mins off and rest, but keep moving your feet to stop clots, you are very very early days, this is a major surgery and it takes time to heel, I am now 8 weeks on Tuesday and have been out walking about 2/3 Km, you will get there but elevate ypur leg and be paitent. There is a grwat forum on Facebook called hip replacement there are lot of people on there from the states.  Hope you get some relief soon x

I'm wondering if acupuncture would help. It helped me alot at that point. It would be worth talking to someone about.

I think at this point, time is needed for healing from this major work.

Acupuncture down the road would be good if needed, I do it, taking a break now and putting good thoughts on the Ligaplex II I'm taking for rebuilding tendons/ligaments which is supposed to strengthen our bones...\

Along, of course with magnesium, Vit D and some good calcium....

    Hi cindy,

it looks to me that all your swelling and weight gain is due to water retention, but i am far from being an expert so it is just my opinion.  About your pain the groin area, it looks to me that it is about normal between 4-8 weeks after surgery.  We have all (or most of us at least) gone thru this.  I had my second THR in March this year and i am now completely recovered...meaning normal.  So hang in there..it will get better smile

Hello, Cindy,  Sorry to hear of your pain: I've been lucky enough not to suffer (much) from pain & so can't comment on it.  However, I did have to put up with both feet, ankles, calvse & the knee on the op side being very swollen for several weeks after my op.  The literature my hospital gave me (Raigmore in Inverness) said that this wasn't unusual; & in some cases lasted for some months.  Mine was rather painful (swollen tissue trying to burst through my skin); & also very annoyingly meant that I had only 1 pair of boat shoes that I could get on my swollen feet. Then one day I suddenly realised that the swelling was mostly gone (I think this was between 5 & 6 weeks post op).  So ~ there's hope that your swelling will go as well (I didn't do any of the things others have recommended to take swelling down: just had a few brandy & sodas every night to make me forget about it!).  Good luck.

Hip replacements are very painful, no doubt about that issue. Four weeks post surgery is early in the healing process.

A couple of things could be the problem. Your surgeon doesn't sound like he's on the ball, so to speak. He addresses your problem by suspending your PT. He seems to acknowledge your pain in that respect. His bedside matter is lacking because he doesn't address your discomfort or worries about the swelling.

I have had 2 thr on the same leg in 8 months. My pain was agonizing for the first 4 weeks. I had some swelling the second time, but nothing anywhere like you describe. I am wondering how many hip replacements you surgeon has performed. I would get a second opinion. Things were very painful for me; however, your swelling doesn't sound right.

The second time for me, my surgeon referred me to a Pain Specialist. Surgeon had put me on Vicodan, it just wasn't working for me at all.

The Pain Specialist immediately put me on Diuladid. Much better, however it didn't eliminate the pain-just made it more bearable.

I would see a Pain Specialist right away. They will monitor your pain. If you are not improving, your surgeon will be notified. Honestly, ortho surgeons aren't that savvy with pain management. They have an agenda, usually not well versed with pain issues.

So sorry you are feeling so badly. Things don't sound quit right. Good luck.

Dear CindyB, firstly we don't care where your from, this forum is for people who have had hip replacement, and to try to get some answers from others in the same boat.orry to hear about  the pain your going through, had posterier hip replaced 3 weeks ago, had some swelling but almost gone now apart from knee but nowhere near as bad as you, and pain almost under control with pain meds,I do think you should go and see someone else for a second opinion, here in uk, once we are out of hospital we have any problems we go back to our general practise doctors, not our surgeon, he then refers us on, perhaps you can do similar, explain the problem ask him to send for second opionion, at least if it the same it will put your mind at rest. Good luck, really hope things get better, bet your husband wants you to go for a second opionion, he's waiting for you to ask, none of us want to see our better halves in pain.Bodger.
