Headaches for over 3 weeks - One sided, above and behind eye.

I'm a 19yr old student and I've had a constant dull pain above my left eye and behind for over 3 weeks now. The pain was fairly deep (pressure type) behind and on my eye brow - felt like sinus headache and often once a day got very painful to the point were I couldn't function properly.

Originally the doctor said it was cluster headaches, however I was then told that it could possibly be my sinuses and was referred to an ENT specialist. I've had ringing in both ears for about 1 year and a popping/fullness in my left ear for about the same period of time. Never suffered from migraines although I have had my fair amount of headaches growing up due to stress, being tired etc.

ENT said my problem was not sinuses, she used a camera up my nose to check. Also had hearing test which came back normal although she did say my left ear showed slight congestion or something which makes sense as this is were the popping is. She said the pain is neuropathic and is being caused by inflammation therefore she prescribed me 'Flixonase Nasule drops' to take twice a day for 6 weeks however she said this would take at least 2 weeks to work.

I was originally taking a combination of Sudafed, Aspirin and Ibuprofen - Sometimes all togetheror sometimes just a combination of two which worked for about 5 days, with the occasional dose of Codine if needed. This stopped working and the doctor prescribed me 'Diclofenac' 50mg tablets and take 3 a day. This has almost completely taken my pain away with just some niggling pain - sensations sometimes, however this reminds me the problem is still there just being numbed by the inflammatory.

Today I've been to the dentist to ensure there was no problems in my mouth. They said I've got wisdom teeth appearing on my left side however everything looks fine and just need to keep my eye on it and she doubts that is the cause of my headaches. Although she did say there is signs I may grind my teeth at night (no major problems) however I could get a mouth piece to wear at night, she said this could be causing headaches but it might be worth leaving it a few months. I've also had a clicking jaw which I've noticed more recently and whenever I eat now I can hear it popping.

I'm completely confused as to whats actually wrong with me! Nobody is giving me a proper answer although something is clearly inflamed as diclofenac is working! If there is anybody who has had similar or knows about these things any reassurance would be great as this is bringing me down.

Thanks

Are you on the contraceptive pill if so get a review and BP check. Diclofenac is a good short term anti-inflammatory but naproxen has a better safety profile. All anti-inflamm can irritate the stomach and need to be used cautiously in asthmatics. Sudafed can cause rebound congestion if used regularly for more than a week.

If not on the pill will need to know if you are on any other medication and what your diet and lifestyle is like.

    Hope this helps

Forgot to add that a compelling indication to stop or change a contraceptive pill is bad migraine headaches.

I don't know if you will see this, but you described everything that I'm feeling. But now my ears are not ringing. They are like pugged up. I was in so much pain last month, that I orally swallowed my son's medication that he stopped taking . It's called carbamizapene? It's used for bipolar conditions & also to control ceizures. I hope you feel better soon. As for me, I've been making plans to do all the stuff in life that I pu off .

Hi there. I know you posted this 5 years ago but I was just wondering if you had any more developments. I typed into google my symptoms and your question came up. I’ve been getting this eye pain on & off for a good while now. I have it at the moment & it started 2 weeks ago. I’ve tried sinus meds, codeine (think it made it worse) ibuprofen, caffeine. Nothings permanently worked. I was starting to convince myself it was a brain tumour! I had wondered if it’s from using my iPhone as I’m on it a lot and last thing at night. At the moment I feel like all the bones on the left of my jaw & eye are so with an intense pain at the back of my left eye, under the socket near my nose side, It’s driving me mad. Are you over your pain now Jacko. Thank you

I am currently having exact same problem. Went to dr a few days ago.. they said sinus. . But I don't think so.. been on antibiotics for for couple days and no change. Ibuprofen and Tylenol not working. Pain is all around my eye socket..especially on nose side and pain in jaw joint and left ear. It's driving me crazy.

I have your symptoms. Pain behind left eye, cheek, and left side of nose. (Pain, but also a tingly feeling) i had sinus surgery 2 years ago. Did not help. I think it's migraines, which is strange because I'm 45 and never had headaches before. Sumatriptan seems to help, I usually need 2, but lately I'm in pain most of the day.

    Hi everyone,

I typed my symptoms in the Google and came across this discussion as I'm having almost the same symptoms from last more than 2 weeks which is pain behind the eyeball and eye socket the left eyebrow area but I have one extra symptom which is I'm feeling pain while swallowing in the throat t that too is constant along with the previous symptoms and I'm continuously visiting my doctor but he is continuously giving me antibiotics along with pain killers. However no any improvements so far. He has examined with endoscopy, x-ray etc all are clear. Now I'm getting more worried that what could possibly it be.... if anyone of you has to five me advise or share anything important related to that please reply or contact me if possible on WhatsApp plz 00971564730453

I tell everyone this.. try a neti pot and use it according to instructions. I know its gross but try it. The saline will help with inflammation and clean out the sinuses. Its worth a try. See an orthodontist about the TMJ maybe you need braces.

I have found that we as patients need to be proactive in our care. The doctors are so bogged down by seeing so many patients that bedside manner and really caring have gone out the window- in my opinion.
