My 6yr old is in agony due to Severe Constipation

Hi,

My 6 yr old daughter has been constipated for over a week.

She is having bouts of pains that I can only compare to labour pains. These are usually at least every 30 mins, and sometimes go on for a long time. She wails and writhes around the room in agony.

She is now so scared of going for a poo that she is holding it in.

She can't walk straight and only wants to lay down.

She has never been in so much pain.

We've been to doctors 3 times in 3 days, and she has been prescribed Movicol, lactulose and dulcolax.

Can anybody help, reassure, provide any suggestions etc?

Thanks

Hello, at first concentrate your daughter’s fiber and water intake levels.

To eliminate the constipation issues first of all we should maintain a sufficient water and fiber intake levels.

As per the Daily nutritionists words, 4-8 years children need 25 grams of fiber per day so please maintain these levels.

Apple, pineapple, spinach, flax seeds, beans are the good food sources for fibers.

Also concentrate on water intake levels; it should be minimum 1.5 liters in a day.

By these little changes I hope you can identify the good constipation changes.

Don't worry, Constipation is not a disease but a it is condition. Constipation occurs when bowel movements are less frequent than normal. Irrespective of age it happens due to poor dietary habits. The people who are not consuming enough fiber and water are also constipated. Add fiber foods to your kid's diet it will avoid this condition and while consuming fiber foods tell him to drink more water

Sorry for the little angels problem. I think you have to relook to the diet you are feeding her. Also children tend to play a lot outside and they can eat the food directly without washing the hands properly. Things I’m saying can be weird but once watch the poop of her. Worms can be a reason of the constipation and chronic pains for her. I suppose these are the prime causes of her condition. Make her learn how to be hygiene. Living hygiene can be a solution for all issues as it can prevent many health complications.

As discussed by other members also concentrate on the foods suggested by them. I suggest having a consultation of a gastro intestinal specialist. Discuss the problem detailed with him. Hope the best then.

Don’t be panic nothing to be worried. Constipation is a symptom, not a disease. Every person probably has experiences of constipation in some stage of their life its cause of poor diet. What does she eat and drink? Try to change your daughter diet. Try to consume fiber you should aim for 25 to 30 grams of dietary fiber each day (a mix of both soluble and insoluble). You should try to drink a glass of warm prune juice every day will help you move your bowels. It’s not good to be constipated; it can really make you sick. As ZophaiRoberts and xanmurphy suggested above very well please follow the diet and see it for week if is recovery itself up or else I would personally suggest you to consult a doctor and tell your daughter symptoms to doctor he/she can give you better advice.

Hi JuanitaFrapp, for 6 years baby girl 25 grams of fiber is more than enough, 30 grams would be considered as high levels of fiber for a 6 years girl.

Here are the recommended fiber intake levels as per the age and gender.

    For Males (19-50 years): 38gm/day

    For Females (19-50 years): 25gm/day

For Male (51 years and older): 30gm/day

For Females (51 years and older): 21 mg/day

While consuming the fibers we should maintain equilibrium, because high and low fibers are not recommended at any cost.

Thanks ZophaiRoberts, you have clearly mentioned about fiber intake: dear agg2uk before consuming please consult to dietitian because as you mentioned your daughter is 6 years old we might be can’t say exact range of intake as above ZophaiRoberts is mentioned approximately near to by range. If you required exact range if intake please consult to dietitian he/she can give you exact range of intake.

Have you checked with the diet you are feeding the little one? If not please check once. Already I have pinned about checking the poop. As that may contain the pinworms in the stomach. The chronic constipation or the abdominal pains it could be due to them. She would have played outside and haven’t washed hands properly before eating the food.

She is just a little one and has to be handled kinder. Do not be harsh on her condition. Feed and treat her well with the points discussed by the other members. Soon we can hope she can recover.

    Hello,

I know this was posted a year ago but I have been having the same issues with my son for that long , and As you said you have been to the dr who has obviously told u about fibre as they did me however when the child is holding it in it's a different story and is distressing when there's nothing you can do !! I did have a mini breakthrough however it wasn't pleasant and involved suppositories I hated doing it and he hated it to obviously and I'm not sure if the fact he didn't want them any more is what started him trying to go more, another couple of things I do is when he's on the toilet goin I will rock him forwards and backwards this helps an awful lot sometimes, he started going to the toilet really well and has recently reverted back to his old ways, if there's anything you done that helped I would love to know and I hope your daughter is ok now

    Holly 😊
