Long term sore throat - resolved

I had a sore throat for 8 years, on and off.  The last 2 years it has been constant.  Went to the ENT specialist in 2006, he did all the tests including MRI and found nothing.  Told me my tonsils were OK.

4 years later went to another ENT consultant for a 2nd opinion.  He took one look at my throat and said my tonsils were in a terrible condition and needed removal.  He took them out and there was a reprieve from the constant sore throat for about a year - Then it came back!

Fast fwd to about 3 months ago.  I had blood tests, another MRI, scope, etc etc. By now my throat had developed into granular Pharyngitis but consultant couldn't make his mind up whether it was Acid reflux or sleeping with mouth open???

While ALL of this had been going on, one thing was happening at the same time - PND.  Looking back, I estimate I was subconsciously clearing my throat atleast 20+ times a day.  It was automatic.  The consultant had been advised of this and said it was due to a slightly deviated septum causing blockages occasionally.

Anyway - recently, I took to religiously doing two things:  One: Blow my nose atleast 3 or 4 times every day.  This 'eases' the nasal build up of mild congestion due to the deviated septum. TWO: NOT to clear my throat automatically.  I percevered for several months with this regime and for the first time in all these years - the throat problem has GONE....permanently!  It was hit and miss to start with, requiring salt water gargles occasionally, but over time (12 weeks+) the pain subsided and has now gone completely.

I hope this could be the cause for many sore throat sufferers - have you noticed how often you clear your throat?  Do you blow your nose religiously even though it feels like you don't need to?  Try it - what have you got to lose - except a sore throat!

Hi. It can be due to reflux. Not only acid, there are many refluxes.

i too have pnd. have had surgery for deviated septum. and it has not worked.. still there. cant get a camera down that one. it could be allergies. due to my husband smoking or anything.  i did take anthistimines for awhile. but then my nose was too dry.. i will always have the sniffing.  Its not habbit its me breathing. when it gets too blocked..

but i still have periods of long sore throats. approx 8 weeks wehn i get a virus.  Having deviated septum will also mean you prob have sinusitis when you get sick and that usually taktes longer to get well.

but i also have chronic lingual tonsilitis ... many years after having my tonsils out.

    they too can be removed.
