Does anyone have a functional cyst causing symptoms?

I have had this issue for several months now that has been getting worse, I had an ultrasound that showed a cyst, but they are saying it isn't cause for concern because it's a functional cyst.
I think there is, when at times it feels like I'm being stabbed with a knife, otherwise it's a constant ache, at times a burning that spreads into my thigh or down my leg, and I am nauseous, but I can't seem to get help. All they will do is another ultrasound, but clearly the cyst is causing these symptoms, has anyone had this particular thing happen to them?

YES!! All of my known, diagnosed Functional Cysts have caused me pain, sometimes to the extent that I prayed they would take them out surgically. Eventually, each of them resolved on their own, thankfully. My cysts have generally been "small" to "medium" on the medical scale of measurement, and I have had more than one doc tell me that they "shouldn't be causing that kind of pain". Those people have either never had a painful cyst or they were men.
I'm a bit concerned that your symptoms are getting worse as time goes on and not better, and my advice would be to consult another Ob/GYN for a second opinion.
But rest assured, you are not alone. I've had intense pain with "functional" cysts, and mine always eventually resolved on their own. Best of Luck.

My main concern, is the fact that is my only ovary now, I lost the other to a dermoid a few years ago. That is why I cannot understand why the GYN isn't taking this more seriously, he was the one who knows what I went through!
All he's doing for now, is schedule me for another ultrasound for October 28th, then another appointment with him on November 4th, but despite the ultrasound, I am still having these symptoms and they aren't coming out of thin air. And I can't take any chances when that is the only ovary I've got! Plus an ultrasound may not show everything, if he still won't do anything I am going to ask to be referred to another OB/GYN that has helped a couple of my friends.
You are so right, what you said about them being men, how could they possibly understand how things like this feel for us? And they make it seem as though it's not a big deal when it most certainly is!
Again, thank you for your concern, as I mentioned it's even more urgent since I just have one.

That said, it wouldn't hurt if you did consult another OB/GYN - especially if you're unhappy with the treatment you're getting from this Doc. Doctors aren't magicians and they don't know everything (despite their attitudes sometimes!) -- another doc might have an alternative treatment method or he/she may just confirm what the original doc told you which might be reassuring.
I should have been more specific last night, too. My symptoms with Functional ovarian cysts were not only painful, but were just as you described: Pain that can be stabbing pain or burning pain, and almost always the pain would radiate down my thigh (as well as my back). I didn't have nausea very often -- but it did happen on occasion with a cyst.
Did your Dr. give you a script for pain meds, or are OTC meds working for you?
You're not running a fever, right?

Yes, I will do that if I am still feeling this way on the 4th, and depending on the result of the ultrasound. The thing is, that was my mistake before, putting it off and thinking it was nothing, and wound up losing the ovary as a result. And you are absolutely right about some of their attitudes!
I'm sorry you had to go through that too, and, he gave me a prescription for birth control pills, which are doing nothing for these symptoms. As for a fever, I don't at the moment, but I have had one yes.

Yes, I just found out...I had two MRI's done ...I was getting burning pain...some days can't handle...We thought it was a hernia, or tear in lower left pelvis area. My results just came in yesterday to reveal a large cyst.I hope to remove soon. I feel your pain. I would demand a MRI to clarify your pain if I were u that u can't handle pain. I am so glad I did and I so feel your pain.

I have had this same pain and burning for 3 YEARS! My gynecologist did surgery to remove a cyst last January only to tell me it was gone. So he took out my appendix thinking he would be my hero. Unfortunately I have had the same pain all last year. They keep telling me it is m gallbladder (however the gallbladder dr said NO) and I have been to the chiropractor because they told me I have degenerative discs. My pain in on my lower right side. Sometimes my buttcheek goes numb. My right side feels like there is a burning twisting knife and I can hardly bend over or sit. Do you have any advice for me. My doctors all think I'm crazy I guess, and say there is nothing more to be done. Thank you for any help. And tell me, did you have surgery. Also, would an MRI reveal something that ultrasound doesn't? I have had ultrasounds.

you have the burning pain? I have been having burning pain in lower back and stomach for about 5 days now. I don't know if this is part of my perimenopause or not.

Hi guys I'm 28 and had these symptoms for a good 5 years befor they did anything for me! I had the wait and see rubbish I had three cuts at one point in my left ovary 2 disappeared and when taken out befor rupturing was 8cm and my the one in my right which they thoughts was a 4cm turned out to be 10cm. They opted for open bilateral cystectomy both ovaries in tact a year down the line I have another appointment to see specialist as I have an enlarged left ovary and thickened lining!! Please keep an eye and if your worried find another doc to talk to! I began to feel at a loss befor a lovely doctor said let's get you sorted! Keep on they will get sick of you pestering and get you sorted xx I really hope all goes well for you all xx

I have been told categorically that "this small functional cyst is not causing you so much pain". After 6 months of burning/stabbing intermittent pain and CT scan to reveal a small follicular cyst. I've been told to just relax. Please help.

Jackie, I'm sorry you're being treated that way - it seems a lot of us see unsympathetic providers.
Want to know something odd? When I had "large" cysts by measurements, it was minor, dull backache pain. When I'd have the "small" 2-4 size cysts, I was always sure it must be my appendix rupturing, it hurt that much. My RT ovary would develop a cyst every other month, like clockwork. So painful. I had a lap to remove Endo and I begged my Dr to remove my RT ovary too and sure enough, when she got in there, the RT ovary was 2X the size of my LT ovary and wasn't looking healthy so she thankfully took it. Improved my pain for a few years. But, eventually, the LT ovary took over -- I think my guts were punishing me for not having a baby :O Whatever. Eventually, I had a full Hyst so I no longer worry about the cysts.
I strongly recommend getting a 2nd or 3rd opinion. You deserve to be treated with respect and compassion. Any Dr who tells you you're not in as much pain as you're in should be fired. There's a war against pain medication in America right now and the powers that be have started giving Dr's grief about prescribing opioids....which directly affects how Dr's treat their patients.
On one hand, it's reassuring that your imaging and exams aren't showing anything the Dr thinks needs surgical intervention but that doesn't mean you aren't suffering. Seek other opinions. I don't know what country you're in or what insurance you have but ask your friends who they see/recommend...good luck, Jackie. You're going to be ok.
