Large red bump on nose

Hi all fellow sufferer's, I have experience bouts of unsightly rosacea from time to time, which usually cleared up when taking tetracyclene for a few weeks. However, just before Christmas, a red bump began to appear on the tip of my nose. At first I did not connect it with rosacea, it being so different from anything I had experienced before. My GP (a very experienced doctor by the way)however said, straight away - 'rosacea', and prescribed tetracyclene for four weeks, plus rosex cream twice a day,to be applied to the surface of the skin. I returned to the GP at the end of the 4 week period, at which point my GP said immediately, 'it's got bigger'. and it had, it's about just over half an inch in diameter now, very red and quite raised. I am still hopeful that these treatments will work, although loosing a little confidence, but its the iching which continues through the day and all through the night, last night I had about 2 hours sleep. I just wonder - is there anyone out there that has experienced anything like it? if so, I would like to hear from you, just to know how you got on with it. Many thanks, anybody?

    I would recommend trying plain old calamine lotion.  Slather it on nice and thick before you go to bed.  At the very least it should take away the itching but I think it might help with the redness and swelling too.  This is what I use when I get red bumps.  I also occasionally use metro gel as needed and between the two of them I usually have the redness gone pretty quickly.  Good luck!

      Thank you sleew, I shall follow your advice, and I shall let you know how I get on. For the moment I have stopped using the rosex cream, even though my GP says to use it, I do believe, as it suggests on the information that came with this medication, that it can make matters worse. So thank you again sleew. I shall now try calamine lotion.

    I appreciate that you will let me know how the calamine works for you.  It has been a life saver for me and I never hear about others using it so I'm very interested in the feedback.  It would be lovely if this cheap product could bring relief to other fellow sufferers smile  Good luck!

      Hi sleew As promised I am back to let you know how I got on with the calamine, I actually used a product called Aqueous Calamine Cream, it comes in a tube. I have used it each of the past three evenings, and it has worked really well and stopped the iching immediately. I had also tried Eurax (stop itching fast) cream, which I have used for exema (hmm. not sure how to spell that, and too lazy to look it up) anyway, on my rosacea, but that gave me a most uncomfortable burning sensation.  So, thank you for your suggestion, I go find this site most helpful.       Glad you found some relief and thanks for the feedback. I use a solution of 8% calamine, 8% zinc oxide. Most helpful for flushing.

    Hi,

    I have recently had a large red lump appear on the end of my nose as well. Doctor says its Rhinophyma and has prescibed Metronidazole 0.75% I have to use this for 4 weeks (from yesterday the 25th Jan) and return for her to take another look. I did see on the net an article from the Daily Mail from a couple of years ago abot a chap who had a small opp. to remove his lump. Successful result by all acounts. Doc says htis treatment is not avaliable on thr NHS. Any knoe anythig different?

      Hi lentos  What you say I find very interesting, you are the first to reply to my posting and to say of a similar experience to mine. You will see in the detail I posted that I was seen by two very experienced NHS doctors. The one doctor I have known for well over 30 years and he does have specialist experience of skin problems, and yet he did not say that my condition could be Rhinophyma. I shall look further into that condition. I will come back to you if I find out anything I think you may like to know. Can I ask you, does the area of skin around the nose itch dreadfully with you, and how quickly did yours appear. Mine started about 4 weeks before Christmas, but by the second week of January it was the size it is now, about half an inch or so in diameter and quite raised. But it does not seem to be getting any larger now. Thanks again for your posting, this is how we learn about these conditions, all stuff the GP may not stop to explain in detail. Pip78

      Hi Pip,

      Nice to hear from you and for sharing your condition. Well after talking with my wife she says that my nose has got decidedly 'bumpy' over the past year. (and I never noticed!) HOWEVER the large red blob that has now taken residence on the end of my nose appeared very quickly. From Christmas like yours. In fact it looks like another ones coming to joint it. Now I thought  the original one (which I shall call B1) was a boil. It certainly felt like it. In fact the tip of it grew until it popped while I was washing my face. When I looked in the mirror there was blood everywhere, and it did it again on Wednesday. So although the pressure has subsided the blob has not. And yes Pip it does itch although not as bad as yours it would seem. I apply the Metronidazole in the morning and at tea time. On a couple of occasions I have put calomine on at bedtime and although I don't suppose it will help the condition it certainly helps the itching. Try it, it won't do any harm.

      As for the diagnosis: I actually said to the (young) registra Doctor 'is this Rinophyma?' to which she agreed. I see that several sites- The British Association of Dermatologists being one of them mention that potions will not do much good. For Rinophyma anyway and that surgery is best option. Although apparently it can return in some people. In other words, A chance. I did ask the GP to refer me to a dermotologist which she is reluctant to do. She want to give the meds a go first. Anyway she says, this type of Op is not available on the NHS as it's classed as cosmetic. Mmmmmmm.. I shall ask (insist maybe) the next visit. I have seen pics of people with this disease and it can be truly horrendous. Have you seen any?

      I have been in touch with a private clinicwho tell me that the method he uses is the Carbon Dioxide Laser. The initial consutation fee is £150.00 and surgery, which takes approx 1hour is between £1500 and £2500. (ouch). If I coose this option and with this clinic I would also have to factor in an overnight stay as he says I probaly will not want to drive home. He is in Bedforshire. And I'm not! I will contact others to see what alternative procedures and clinics there are. This is just a start really. Info gathereing as it were.

        Did you see the pics on the Daily Mail site? I thought they were impressive although I don't know if the result was permanent.

      How did you get on at the Dermotologist? I am really interested asI seem to be following your path. My nose is really itchy now so I am keen to know how things went.

      Hi lentos  The Dermatologist suggested a skin biopsy, which I should have had done last Monday. However, the weather intervened and my wife and I spent two and a half hours stuck on the M4 motorway. Biopsy has now been rearranged for Thursday 11th. and I will not have the result until the Dermatologist returns from holidays on the 29th. Feb. Then, my wife and I are away ourselves for a week, so, it's going to be some weeks before I will have anything concrete to tell you. This is also a private treatment, not to sure about costs yet, but will let you know.

    Hi Pip,

    Interesting. Do let me know how it goes. I think the moderator still has possesio of my reply of three days ago but briefly I wrote (I think): my bump appeared very rapidly, seemingly over a couple of weeks,although my wife has now said that it had been looking ever so slightly lumpy for a while. Dear me, and I never noticed. I suppose i Didn't because it wasn't red. Anyway, now it is and would appear to becoming more bulbous by the day! My GP has given me a tube if Gel Metronidazole and to apply it twice daily and return in three weeks. She also gave me a leaflet which she printed out while I was there. Curiously this leaflet explains that the precscibed gel is the first line of defence against Rosacea.To help try to reduce the redness. But it goes on to explain that Rinophyma can only really be treated by surgery.

      I did ask her if she could refer me to a Dermotolgist but she is reluctant and of the opinion (who's?) that the gel shoud be given a bash first. Why, I have no idea as all the sites that I have read, including the British Association of Dermotology (BAD) say surgery.

    I have also made contact, by e-mail a sugeon who carries out this sort of work. Now I am not sure if he is a dermatologist or if I have see one first. That would mean an addtional cost on top of his £150 consultation and £1500 to £2500 surgery fee! If I decide to go with him that is. I will shop around of course. I would also have to factor in a hotel stay.

    Oh and I forgot to say that the GP says the reason surgery is not available on the NHS is because it's calssed as cosmetic!!!

      Well I hop this makes a bit of sense and I hope your vistit to the Dermo goed well. As I say, do let me know how it goes. Fingers crossed that this mail doesn't get blocked!

      Hi

      I have Rosacea & Rhinophyma! The Rhinophyma causes me difficulty in breathing through my nose without nasal strips which I wear everynight! Lately I have "nose bleeds" & a "blocked nose" feeling! Hardly cosmetic & at 72 years old the surgery may become essential although my heart attack in Apri 2015 may have some effect!
