Symptoms of Gilberts Syndrome?

Posted , 2 users are following.

Yesterday I was celebrating with friends and, rash fool that I am, allowed myself a half pint of cider and then, some 3 hours later, a glass of white wine. In between we had a Chinese takeaway.

Today I am SO tired and my eyes feel incredibly so.......I'm otherwise ok after getting rid of a headache this morning (aspirin)

Would other GS sufferers identify with this tiredness particularly around the eyes??

I am not a big drinker these days because I don't like how I feel afterwards and I find it particularly so with wine and not so bad with prosecco 😊 I'm beginning to think it may be the chemicals in the wines.

    Hi Andrea

LOL, hope you enjoyed your celebrations.

As we age, alcohol affects us differently.  With Gilberts Syndrome, it all depends on the level of your bilirubin; which of course, we only know from blood test results & obviously dont have these taken daily, so its unknown at times whether alcohol will affect us more one day than another.

If you were already a bit run down (quite tired), then the alcohol would affect you more.  Gilberts Syndrome isn't a text book condition; it would be hard to find two people with exactly the same conditions.  See if it affects you the same next time; and whether you were already more tired than normal beforehand.

It's all a trial period with Gilberts Syndrome and will you will begin to understand what affects your body.

That's just it. I was diagnosed in my 20s (I'm now 56) and by and large I didn't notice it much after drinking. As I've gotten older I've found the tiredness growing to the extent that I rarely drink more than a couple o drinks and usually ONLY with food (which seems to help). I've read that the condition doesn't get worse but I would disagree. I don't go to work but have been working quite hard in the garden but I am able to rest when I need to.

      Thanks for your response.

Hi Andrea, I'm same age group & was diagnosed at 30. I'm the same when it comes to alcohol; hardly touch it now; even after 1 wine, it affects me. GP's & specialists don't understand Gilbert's Syndrome. Usually our energy level wanes as we age and therefore will affect our GS more. If you do want to have a social drinks with friends and enjoy it with little affect its best to make sure your not run down; maybe pep yourself up on multi vitamins for the week before. smile.
